You can only pic one. A mic that if someone gave you $500 you would buy first over all others. Cheers 1980’s Beyer M88.

I love my sm7, but if I only had one mic for everything maybe the ksm32? Tough call! I’ve never tried the sm7 on acoustics!

[…] Actually the M88 and the M88-ish AKG D790, usually worked best on me, out of all sub-$500 Dynamics.[…] Interesting. Is it M88-ish for vocals only, or on bass drum / floor tom duty as well? All of the above! Washes Windows and changes Oil too.

This is a really good mic for loud/rock vocals. The ADK T-Fet’s are great for the sale price. Or a used Serrano 87. For dynamics, M88, RE20. I have mixed a lot of vocals done with an SM7, and I think they are pretty good for podcasting.

Beyer MC834 used. Don’t know if it’s the best , but I’m getting a lot of use out of it .

(For 499$ I'd pick any of the Lewitt mics that come in around that price. Also great mics but more general purpose.) This. No hesitation.

ADK 3 ZIGMA HA-FX CHI. I like mine best with the C-LOL-49 cardioid capsule.
I bought my head amp and lollipops from Larry a few years ago cheaper than what their website lists now.

What does Chad Kelly’s 2 circuit 87 sell for, its well reviewed and I think around there in price? The United Technologies Twin 87 was down to $499 late last year but then went back to normal price ($699), and now are at $599. I got one at the $499 price. It was a bit brighter than I expected (even in vintage mode) but it's a nice mic. Of course that headbasket doesn't make anyone think it's a U87...

Anyone tried the ADK Munich-7-T T FET Microphone ? Not yet, but I’d love to try one. My experiences with the 251, 49, and 67 are very positive. The 67 is a great all rounder. More mellow than an U87.

Michael Joly MXL 990 Hulk: great mic. Is this the same capsule as the LDC cap he made for Oktava 012s? Wondering how it compares. I have one and desperately want a second. Very U67ish. The caps rarely come up for sale but I see those hulks way more often

And I’ll add that I got my first of my Serrano 87 pair for $500. I use it all the time and wouldn’t hesitate to stick it in front of anything

ISK is worth a look via Runway Pro Audio, shame they shut the factory down taking along with it some of the best tubes you can buy.

No tube goodness, but voiced the same. <<thumbsup>>. I need to use mine more....

Good condition RE16s are getting closer and closer to that $500 mark, but either the RE16 or RE11 would prob be my choice here.
A corollary to the original question might be: “if you could only use one mic to record an album (but as many copies of it as you need), what mic would you choose?”
That corollary question is one of the things that leads me to say RE11/16 to the original question. I could record an entire album with only RE11/16s and feel pretty confident I could get some really cool, vibey, character-ful sounds. A good U87 would also be a good choice, but there’s just something about the way the RE11/16 handles transients.

I mean your stuff definitely had some of the cleanest top end of any Chinese mic I’ve heard. It still had the distorted Chinese low mids but they weren’t sea of mud, battle of Passchendaele like MXL or Alctron mics. small signal miniature tubes in guitar gear and certain pres probably cannot recover. The New Sensor tubes lack the warmth for the circuit designs and the psvane stuff is L O L despite the marketing.

It’s good on everything and is much higher fidelity than the current re20 and any ev635a. It sounds great on vocals, cabinets, and snares. Everything will be a bit woody but it would work. Everything has to be one mic, I wouldn’t go Neumann. I’d do something like a re16, shure ksm141, akg c414, at4033 medium diaphragm condenser. To keep it around 500 bucks. Neumann style is too colored midrange for a lot of things. Sounds off.

Yeah, I like the top end of the 11/16 way more than on the RE20 (of any vintage). The RE27 also has a better top end than the 20 to me, but it’s sort of at the edge of becoming a little harsh on some voices. It’s a good mic, though.

The New Sensor tubes lack the warmth for the circuit designs and the psvane stuff is L O L despite the marketing. I have on good authority that Kathie Lee, is retooling her sweatshops, to meet the new demand for Guitar Amp and LDC microphone tubes. In fact, at Panda Express last night... I got confirmation (in the Fortune Cookie), from her 13 year old Shop Foreman! Chris P.S. They are no longer called "miniature" (let alone "midget") tubes. They now prefer the term "little".
