You can only pic one.
A mic that if someone gave you $500 you would buy first over all others.
Cheers

Probably an SM7 as long as I have a good preamp. I've recorded everything from vocals, to kicks, bass amps, overheads, acoustics, mandolin with an SM7. That and a Schoeps MK21 are probably my desert island mics.

Almost any of the ADK T-FET series can be grabbed for $500 during a sale. I think the 67T and 49T are really good mics. The 251 T is also very nice, but maybe more specific.

When I got my Beezneez U87 I think the conversion rate put it at right near 599$.. Great great vocal mic.
(For 499$ I'd pick any of the Lewitt mics that come in around that price. Also great mics but more general purpose.)

A 2nd hand Beyerdynamic M160.
The cheapest one on eBay right now is $577, but I would be willing to go easier on food expenditure for a few days; it is probably just good for the waistline.

I can’t say there is a favorite do everything sub $500 mic it’s really application specific. If you’re going to make me choose well I have 5 of them so I guess they count as favorites. Anyone remember TapeOp’s big SDC shoot out conducted by Mike Jasper? Anyone remember what mic beat out the KM84 in the unobtainable new catagory? It was one of my Sony c535’s. While I see them listed on EBay for a bit over $500ea but I can always find them for less, I fact might pickup a couple more I know of.

I think I’d second the ADK T-FET mics (on sale).

AT4050 is a good mic and used could be $500. It may not be the absolute best on anything, but it is a good utility mic and rarely sounds bad.

LOL! My "dynamic" past is coming back to haunt me. Geez I remember the 'ol under $60 days of RE15/16 Yore. Want the late 60's Elvis/American Studios vocal thang? Got RE15 (With foam Pop Screen) ? Actually the M88 and the M88-ish AKG D790, usually worked best on me, out of all sub-$500 Dynamics. Then there's the mighty 441/541-of course! Chris P.S. AKG P120 (black) is still my fave vocal slumin' condenser/under $100. MDC!

Shure KSM-32 or Lewitt Mics are great in that price range and punch way above that price point in sound quality

I’d also second the SM7(b). I just kinda love that mic.

Glad to see I am not the only one voting for the SM7. When I bought mine back in the 90s I was trying to decide between it and the RE20. At the time the RE20 seemed more popular, so wanting to be different I went with the Shure. Howd that work out?
Cheers, Geoff

I will fourth the SM7b. Predictable, but it is a great mic. I use it on vocals a lot, but also works great on kick and also on snare. For percussion, I usually take the pop filter off.

I just did a fresh round of vocal mic comparisons on my voice with everything from SM57 to U67, and I landed back on preferring the SM7b. It’s always been my favorite mic to sing through, but now it’s actually my favorite sonically too (for my voice). Also high up in my comparisons was the trusty SM58. Also a dirt cheap Monoprice active ribbon (which really excels on drums and amps). And the 441 too.

Serrano Audio Vintage 84 would also be an interesting choice. at $450 you get a few different capsules and using a SDC for vocals can also produce some quite pleasant results.
