Greetings.
I've not mic'ed up a trumpet in a very long time. Since then, my mics have entirely changed. Here's what I've got. From this list, what would be your first and second choices? Please don't recommend that I buy X because there's no new mic budget.
Shure: KSM-44 KSM-32 KSM-141 SM-27 57
AKG: C-460-B
Gefell: M-930
I'm instinctually gravitating toward the 27 or 44. The 32 is a possibility; that mic sounds really good to great on everything.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
TIA, -09

Had a trumpet player that I used to record a lot. We tried everything from U47's to dynamics. Ultimately we ended up exclusively with ribbons. The one that worked best was the Joly modded 205. But most ribbons will get you close. It's a very rare day when I would pull out any condenser for Tpt. Can you borrow a ribbon? Honestly that mic list makes me not want to record. If I had to choose one, I might try the Gefell. If you have to only use those, try getting as much distance as you can from the mic(s).

Ribbons are usually more flattering to brass players. Dynamics tend to sound "honky" or lots of mids. TLM170s are usually pretty great too with a bit of space, so I'd try the 930 or the 44 first.

I don't know the 930, otherwise I'm leaning KSM-32, I think it's the flattest up top of the others. Agree I almost always go ribbon. Only if it's a very softly played or ambient part might I lean condenser. Yes distance is important, either way.

Trumpet player here…I love a good ribbon, but sometimes they can be a little dark so I’ll throw up my Warm47. Both work great.

Depending on if it’s a featured instrument or not I’d try the 57 into a nice preamp. I’ve had good luck with 57’s and 421’s on brass. YMMV

sE X1rs (ribbon)are $250 and worth having for things like any horns that show up, but they also are useful on a bunch of things.

The classic Jazz Trumpet sound is either an M49 a Ribbon. I have used Dynamics live but to keep it from honking you spend a lot of time EQing it. SDC’s can work if you like it a little bright. Unless you’re using a clip on put about 2.5 to 3ft between the horn and the mic. To close and you will hear every micro movement of the player.

I’d try the 32, 460, and 141, and choose whichever works out the best.

57 always gets you by on everything. Wasn’t Andy Johns all 57’s? do that for close mic, maybe a stereo condenser pair further back, as either backup choice or room mic. Sometimes since you know it’s a crapshoot, its a chance to try stuff like M/S with mismatched mics.. Ribbons are Figure8, probably why they work is the rear capsule facing away. You can setup a cardiod aimed backwards, one forwards.. see what happens

I work with one of the great trumpet players in my country, and he insists on a Coles ribbon > to the point that I convinced him to buy his own so he could walk into any studio and get the sound he loves.

That’s awesome. The Coles is pretty magical. I’ve gotten very very similar results with my fathead lundahl. The Royer never sounds cool to me. Like it’s great for big section work, but for a soloist it feels a little too natural.

+1 for a ribbon - pretty much any ribbon will get you there. Even the $59 GC specials.

As others have mentioned, ribbon mics and the TLM170 are also great on trumpet.
