That Samar VL37 is pretty badass too. The nice thing about the Samar is that it is not a dark sounding ribbon mic. If I had a Neumann M49v, I would try that on trumpet since an M49 long ago worked for Miles Davis. I would at least like to hear what it does. But the Samar is so much less expensive than the Neumann and it is a fantastic mic!

I also picked up an extinct audio bm9 recently. Can’t wait to try it on my horn.

Please don't recommend that I buy X because there's no new mic budget. Shure: KSM-44 KSM-32 KSM-141 SM-27 57 AKG: C-460-B Gefell: M-930 From that list, Gefell would be great. Aside from that, I always liked my RE-20 on trumpets because they really get that nice silky low end without any mud and without losing any highs like you would with a ribbon. That being said, ribbons sound great too.

sE X1rs (ribbon)are $250 and worth having for things like any horns that show up, but they also are useful on a bunch of things. I have a pair of these guys. Me too. Pretty nice for that price.

From that list, Gefell would be great. [/quote] Could possibly be right, but probably only if off-axis and with some distance. How far off and how far away, would be a matter of the room and what is acceptable for the track, so definitely would need some experimentation; which would be pretty-fast and easy if it’s an overdub.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
A couple of options I forgot to mention are:
- AKG D-224-E. The word "underrated" was coined to describe this. Have used it very successfully on woodwinds. - Cascade X-15 stereo ribbon. I could use it in a mono application.

I would try the KSM 32, Cascade X-15, Gefell M-930, and 57 if those don’t work. My friend Giulio is a multi instrumentalist and particularly a brass player. He uses the KSM 32 into an API preamp for everything. You may just have to play with mic positioning.
The 57 will almost certainly work, but may not be the sound you’re after. The M-930 would be one I would try. It could be really nice. I had the KSM44 for years. As a room mic it would be nice, but I’m not sure how it will fair as a spot mic. It might be a touch bright.
I have had good luck with a Blue Woodpecker Ribbon into a Demeter VTMP, FleA 49 into a my stock Apollo preamp was nice.
