I had 2 of these as well as an Echoplex back in the day and I couldn't WAIT to replace them with something quieter, more versatile, and didn't require cleaning tape heads and replacing worn out tapes. I had both a 101 and a 201. What is it with these things that everyone is willing to pay stupid money for them? I don't get it.
I bought the Echoplex new in 1974 and sold it just a few years ago. It still worked but needed a new tape. It sat unused in a closet for decades. When digital delays and reverbs came out I was in heaven. Not going back, EVER!

I have a RE150 from 1979-1980. Well maintained, clean and good tape and it sounds fantastic. Better than any digital delays that everyone was rushing to buy to replace them.
They’re stupid money now! I got mine used for $150. And have seen them go for $1700.
Yet… They sound fantastic

I have a one-owner 301 with lots of stuff I replaced using EchoFix's kits. Bought it before the price explosion, I guess. It's great, but not super useful, just does it's thing when you need that thing.

I feel like there are plenty of analog echo guitar pedals that are very 'vibe' and lots of modulation and sparkle etc that are a fraction of the price. I would def have a space echo if it was around $500 though

It’s pretty crazy what they are going for, but that can be said about a lot of things…
We’re lucky to have some solid plugin versions. Audiothing Outer Space is great, though the default mode of Valhalla Delay is pretty close too.

I'm crazy for that sound... For the music I do, there's nothing quite like it. And I'm not into lo-fi at all... but the Space echo vibe is more "dark" than it is lo-fi. Depends on the context I guess. Pretty much everything is sterile in electronic music. Anything that brings life and space is sure to produce a big impact. And the 201 sounds so good that you can also put them on the foreground and use it as an instrument as it has been said above. About the plugins, well they compliment the hardware quite well. I like to create pseudo stereo with hardware and plugins. But the plugins don't have the magic IME (and the noise...).

One man’s space echo is another man’s PRS. It’s a vibe thing.

We had one in the studio but I always preferred the TC2290 or my favorite delay pedal:
I still own it and it still sounds great.

The thing that made everybody crazy about them when I was young and in a band was Radiohead ‘The Bends’. Suddenly everybody wanted Space Echo on everything, especially guitars. That and the original, metal Digitech Whammy pedal were requisites.

I hope this isn't too off topic... Speaking of pedal-esque delays, I just grabbed one of these goodies. The Realistic Stereo Reverb System. Was 30 bucks off ebay.
The site where I got this image (thanks!) Is linked before and has a great sound example.
Nothing like tape but fun in its own way especially with the real time modification using the delay knob.

My RE-501 is the single most indispensable vibe machine of my studio. Unless I need a bone dry, straight-from-the-source signal, it will be in the recording chain.

I like what it does and there was one in the studio but... as long as it's quirky fun thing isn't super exposed in a close-to-empty mix, i get by with plugs or things that do something similar.

I do print mine to a track frequently. I haven’t found anything that does the same thing, and it’s far faster to print than automate any knob changes on a plug.

What is it that it does for you? Is it a saturation thing a size thing or something else? I know about the modulation effect of tape echos having had some forever but that's nothing I can't do with about any delay plugin out there.

In a weird psycho-acoustic way, Re-201 sound stereo even if they are mono and centered. It's incredible !

No, it's not saturation, it's tape! and unlike other echoes Space Echos used a fairly long loop that didn't constantly rub against itself, so tape didn't wear like it did in an Echoplex. And there's the multiple playback heads, available singly or in combinations, The only other echo that was in the same class was the Korg Stage Echo, whjich used the same technology. (and cost a bit more...)

Straight digital delays are a totally different class of thing, no personality. The sound of changing the master settings, the modulation and feedback. The same echo timing on different speed settings is a totally different texture. Etc. Plus…UFO’s. Landing, taking off, etc. thehollywoodten.bandcamp.com/album/old-wives-tales?t=3

Nothing sounds like the real one, I own 201 and 501, but they leave a big sonic print so they don't fit into every production. Even though I love mine I'd never pay what people are asking today

In my previous life, I used to fix them often. I'm still glad to not have to work with tape in any way now. Yes, I know they had a very cool vibe. I just hate all the maintenance to keep tape based products working.

Replacing a worn out Space Echo tape is easy as hell. It's in a damn CARTRIDGE fer chissakle! None of the nonsense you need to go through with other tape echoes. And they're pretty quiet, as tape machines go.
