If you're bored, check out reddit.com/r/audioengineering. I've never seen so many bad ideas being spread as gospel. It's a big echo chamber. Pick a thread and be appalled. The deaf leading the deaf. Sure, all communities given enough time degrade, but holy cow.

...yeah it's been rough there lately. The current prevailing wisdom there is that you should try to run all of your preamps as hot as possible as long as they don't clip, and as long as they're not clipping you don't need to otherwise worry about gain staging. And god help you if you try to explain why that's... not optimal.

So if this is Heaven (Metaphorically speaking if course ) And GS is Purgatory. Then Reddit is... Is. Is Pittsburgh? (Gasp!) Chris P.S. On the other hand... I could be the one eyed/half witted Cyclops in the Land of the Blind there. Hmm... At least I could have a Club then.

Oh I can make an educated guess where this is coming from, some amps like API for example have 3:1 output transformer taps which drops the overall level & allows you to saturate on input but still control the output then regulate it to -18dB (or there abouts). It's a similar concept with some toob based limiters that have output staging.
However outside of this very limited use case and especially with anything that mentions the letters IC it's most likely not going to end well.

GS is really bad these days. You mean there’s worse?

I left GS when they changed the name (under pressure from the "woke" crowd) I told Jules it will kill the vibe and all the older knowledgeable engineers would leave or stop posting as much once the entitled "kids" arrived .... it's exactly what happened. Half the posts are now trolling and picking a fight. High End is often now Warm Audio (well at least why Warm Audio has the right to be called High End. Huh!) Realgearonline has such a great friendly atmosphere and knowledgeable grown ups! Don't change the name!

GS is really bad these days. You mean there’s worse? That made ME laugh! There still is a dwindling percentage of Super Cool people left. Rather like that last remaining population of Woolly Mammoths. That survived about 6 thousand years longer... By being on Wrangel Island! Uh oh. I might be getting a wee bit "long in the tooth" myself Chris

Yet still understand the shift, towards the societal shift. Nonetheless am happy I was born when I was. Including enjoying the final 40+ years, of the Golden Age of Popular Music. 90's were the Last Gasp for me. And where the Golden Age of TV and Film, was still relevant to the Mainstream US Public. They read too. Chris

I always found it head scratching and I guess kind of amusing that some people, like, sprung to the defense of the name “Gearslutz” - seemingly feeling like they were fighting for some noble cause, and somehow pretending it wasn’t cringey, pubescent boy branding. I dunno. The attempt to make it an anti-woke thing always fell really flat for me because the name was just *so* dumb. Like, did anyone want to say it out loud?
“Honey, what are you up to?”
“Oh, I’m just setting some noobz straight about SM7bs on GEARSLUTZZZZ..I’m a very serious person grumble grumble grumble”
I mean, like, good effort and stuff. Framing it as anti-woke is a good salesmanship tactic. But man, maybe pick a different hill to die on than Gearslutz dot com?
Maybe its just me but that name was so f#%&in dumb.

I find Reddit interface sub-optimal. Don't go there much. And gear space, it's a shit show. Last week on three audioforums I've seen horrible threads ending with banned people (or people bitterly leaving).
It's not fun to be a gear slut no more.

Uhhh okay I'm talking with some person on some discord server and he's asking me for measurements for things that seem to me like common knowledge among serious audio men. I don't know what to do, send help

A little while back Matt from micparts.com came here to explain one of his new mics and was immediately driven off never to return by a "sarcastic" attempt at humor from good old Dan. So much for a warm welcome to the RGO forum. I'm fairly sure Dan never tried the mic in question so there's that. His post was abrasive condescending and pretty obviously intended to insult. Definitely not a classy move or helpful in the slightest.
That was a sad low point for me on this forum. Not everyone gets the "joke" or is in the mood for it at the time. I have a few micparts capsules and while they may not be the best out there they are good value from my point of view.

I believe that the GS name change had more to do with corporate browser blocking. There are A LOT of people there accessing the sight from their work computer, and the word slut in there blocks them off. The societal thing was used as a way to make a little positive press for 'changing with the times.'
The joint was getting worse before that.
I still pop in, but not daily like here.

I'm a member of a Reaper group.. I LOVE Reaper. Been using it since 2005 when it came out..
Anyway, since it's "free" to download, we really do get the worst of the worst asking questions. They ask questions about the most simple stuff, (which I understand to a point) but then they GET ANGRY when you suggest they actually do some searching first. There's whole forums dedicated to new user FAQs as well as the Reaper patron saint Kenny who has made thousands of videos explaining everything from how to install to doing scripting, etc. At the risk of sounding like a jaded old fart, back in my day there were NO places you could ask these things. You just had to figure it out for the most part.
Things have certainly changed. Today's recording generation just doesn't care about learning things. They only care about getting a result.

GS is really bad these days. You mean there’s worse? reddit and any substack site that has the vote up/down system.
Because what happens on sites like that you end up with supposedly experts that every comment they say gets all kinds of upvotes which others had contributed first and didn't get a up vote. Which actually makes me think they have multiple accounts up-voting their posts afterwards. Then if you are going to say something to the contrary of them your downvoted out of existence. I consider that being more toxic than some people just bitching at each other.

While I’m sure Dan posted something that would have made me roll my eyes, if it’s just too emotionally taxing for someone to post, then by all means, don’t bother.

Maybe you need to get a little surreal with your answers to him like Alan Parsons does when he wants to explain things without the tech speech. Because I don't know the specifics of the conversation, and a lot of things are not simple paint by numbers or have a set confines to working within a box.

...but we ALL know that saturation to the point of distortion is optimal, RIGHT? Ya gotta push it, push it good, in order for it to have the ability to sound good.

I have a few micparts capsules and while they may not be the best out there they are good value from my point of view. Its hard to say anything based on that I can't find it. But I'm not the most tech savvy guy out there with computers and web forums. But I can imagine Dan heckling someone who's first post is an advertisement. But the micparts guy shouldn't turn yellow and leave either. Rather he should share more about what he's doing different.
When I look at these mic parts places, they are going to be marketing things I seen on alibaba and the like but be more selective and resale the good finds along with boards/kits they create. There are places for this mic modding but that does not mean all of my mics need to be modded either. Just getting the right mic or the application and positioning it better works.
I probably know Dan in real life. And a lot of things people say here don't compute with him in what he's found out on his own. Because he asked me shortly after signing up here if these people here on line are for real. I noticed he deleted his profile. Hopefully he will come back because he offers a different point of view. You may or may not like what he says, but it is his point of view.

...but we ALL know that saturation to the point of distortion is optimal, RIGHT? Ya gotta push it, push it good, in order for it to have the ability to sound good. It works for most things when I did that with tape.
But I learned different ways to just change the distance in a mix at lower levels, so I can define the sound stage and my mix composition instead of just arbitrarily slamming the tracks to the top of the Vu meter. So I don't mix to the top of the vu and end up with a better, open sounding mix. The only people that ever complained hearing my mix is people not understanding that you are not suppose to have a delivery level mix aka loud as a CD mix with a DAW system.

Some manufacturers and distributors have this very diva’esq idea of how they should be treated. A couple of months ago I was talking to a manufacturer who felt they should be protected like another manufacturer by the mods of another forum, had to explain that it wasn’t that manufacturers are protected, it’s advertisers who receive special treatment. How can you be in business and not understand that money talks.
