I was really cynical but it doesn’t sound bad and it’s good it gets the name out there. It adds something like Cranesong Phoenix but not big tubes and transformers. I was hoping it did not sound like the hardware, because frankly I am not that impressed by the Ca70 plug. It is ok, but not incredible. I guess I had expectations that it would capture some of the magic that people I trust, including you, write about the Ca70 hardware. I do want to get the CA70 hardware. The SBII plugin, however, is an amazing compliment to the hardware SBII, which I have. There's no magic.

Everyone's salty this weekend . I thought the plugin did a great job and is awesome. At the end of the day, it's just a preamp emulation. I don't know what a lot of you are expecting out of it. It does the Coil thing really well, it's never going to do all the stuff something like a Silver Bullet will. What tool do you need and what are you trying to do?

Perhaps my expectations were too high! And perhaps I am not using as well as you are. So, based on your post, I am going to put it through some more paces.

Perhaps my expectations were too high! And perhaps I am not using as well as you are. So, based on your post, I am going to put it through some more paces. I've been in honeymoon mode for a while now with all the Coil stuff, so in all honesty (even though I'm trying) it's not like I'm exactly an unbiased opinion on here... I'll just leave you with two of the biggest things that come to mind. First, there was a dramatic difference in how all my mics sounded going through the Coils compared to my other preamps. They're colorful right off the bat, but once you start to understand how the output knob interacts with the input stage, negative feedback/lo end, you realize it can get a lot more transparent as well. I've tried everything under the sun and have not found another preamp that can do that so easily. It's made me rethink a lot of negative experiences I had with certain types of microphones (such as C12 styles) because they can sound so different going through a Coil. Second suggestion, put the plugin or hardware over your mix bus at the very beginning and mix into it. If that experience is anything like it was for me, you'll notice that you're making really different choices than you normally do, especially with EQ and saturation/color stuff. I think I had an easier time appreciating it as a line level device since I was able to have the hardware here first and hear exactly what it was doing compared to other preamps. Most people are going to throw the plugin on and go "ok, it sounds thicker in the low mids and is darker". Mix a whole song through the plugin from the beginning. When you're done, bypass it and try to match what it's doing. The plugin and Coil hardware is not subtle. The "thing" it all does is exactly what I want in this stage of life/recording, everything's just gotten easier and quicker in general (on the recording side expecially). The only time I've touched my API console preamps in the last 4 months has been a handful of times when I just needed more channels, and I love those preamps. I was really curious to try the preamps and fully expected to mess with them for a week or so and go "ya, those are cool. I tried them, got it out of my system and can move on with life". 15 minutes into messing with them and I was pretty much in shock. It's not fun selling a lot of stuff you love because a company kicked you that hard in the head all of a sudden.

I'm totally addicted to my hardware CA70s Coils, often nearly all of the important stuff goes through them. They are incredibly versatile preamps - a three way tonal dance between input gain, negative feedback and output circuit. I've had over a year to get to know them, tracking with them often. There is lots of variation of tonal control on these. Like andersmv nods to - they make mics sound really great. When mixing lately, I have used them as my two buss tube line amps, then into a POM Fairchild - sometimes a Michelangelo too. Sounds incredible - the Coils are magic. Looking forward to the plug in, which has been highly praised.

Just put a deposit down on the chassis and a couple of CA-70 modules with VK. Sounds like their ETAs have been flaky for quite some time so no idea when they'll happen but looking forward to diving in.
