The silver box. I’ve had one years ago…I sold my Burl AD…and I think I regret it. Just did a vocal through the Apollo x6 AD and had some problems getting it to not be a little harsh. You just can’t tell this shit until you do it a couple times in the real world…but there was a little spikey-ness in the 6-8Khz range that I just don’t remember being there in the past using the Burl with the same chain.
So - I’ve been perusing reverb and noticed the 2x6 Symphony iOS going for well under $1000. That AD is most likely better than the x6 still, don’t you think? It would be nice to compare the Apogee DA with my Burl DA too.

So to be more clear, this is the question: will a Symphony mki AD sound better than the Apollo x6?

John, I’m going to have a Symphony MKI 8x8 Analog for sale shortly. They are great units. PM me if you’re interested.

This probably won’t answer your question, but the AD on my Apogee Element is neck and neck with my Lavry, and both are miles ahead of my old Apollo Twin.
Some folks I really trust speak very highly of the original Symphony. I have no doubt it’s a great converter.

The main thing is the apollo mid range push/emphasis which the symphony won’t have.
Remember though the Symphony mkii vs mki has improved conversion and da and you had mine for a short while.
Do you recall, preferring it to your apollo ?

Do you recall, preferring it to your apollo ? I think I remember them being close and I probably preferred the softer DA on the Symphony, but it just made more sense at the time to go with the Apollo because of a list of reasons. I’d basically just be using it for the AD, and the DA would be a luxury if it happened to beat out the Burl.

So I’m on a time crunch to buy this thing…he’s got another buyer. $600 for this AD is a good deal, right?

If he has another buyer, then there’s a market. So you could sell if you don’t like it.

But does he? lol he might just be trying to push me…he actually said he “has another offer but wanted to check with me because I inquired first.” Also, he only has two sales…makes me the slightest bit nervous. I’d be covered by Reverb and/or PayPal credit, wouldn’t I?

Why not pass and get the one offered above ?

Why not pass and get the one offered above ? Because it’s going to be $500-800 more. I don’t really need more AD - I only do stereo recording at most…and have the Apollo. It would be nice to have more da, but it would only be two more.

Depends how tight things are, $500 sounds reasonable and yeah you can always flip it, but the question you have to ask yourself is it going to make you want another Burl?

Apogee Symphonies are better than the Apollos but you’re wavering so I’d say pass. Maybe try Soothe, TDR Arbiter and De-Edger, or U-he Satin? What mic and pre are you using into the Apollos? Those upper treble issues are tough, are often from the mic or room, and can be exacerbated by poor quality circuitry.
Apollos are okay with their standard PGA2500 chip pres and old school NE5532 based line amps but you can a lot better.
For Apogee, the new SE modules (2x6 se and I presume the new 16x16 se is sick too) and the Desktop are really good. They have less heat issues and fan noise. The Desktop has no fan.

No - it's supposed to make me NOT want another Burl AD lol. I'm fine with flat non transformer on the way in, though. It would be worth $500-600 for this AD and then add 6 more outs if I want to ever get into outboard summing. Would give me 12 total.

If you’re firmly in that camp and can swing it with the holidays grab it. You’re probably not going to find anything better at the price., Equal but different maybe but not better. Plus you know the sound.

Yeah - you're probably right about the room maybe being the culprit. It's a Soyuz 017 tube into a Stam 1073 and AS 76F...I guess it could be a number of things...I just find it interesting that I hadn't really struggled with my vox in that area in a while. Made me blame the AD. The room is treated, but maybe I need to be singing long ways...I've been kind've singing towards one of the baffles/traps. Room is like 22x13...

Could be slight capsule issues not in provided smoothed fr from the Chinese or Russian clone capsule even if it sounds good. Then those hit the Neve high shelf and output transformer ringing and then the 1176 smashed down the peaks and bring it up so if you have a pesky source, room, or mic, it’s no fun despite the cool sound. Could be anything though. Gotta run. Seeing a movie.

The only awful ad I heard this recently was one of the behrigner ones. It really dulled all these guitars so I reamped them with the eh germanium overdrive pedal emulation from fuse (the el germano) to get some life back. That’s such a good pedal but it’s discontinued. Also my motu adcs suck. They are warmed over lofi like some old fart hifi rig. Everything that is looped through them loses detail and gains mud. Even vs the dac outs on the motu units. I hate the adcs on them. And the web browser drivers. I never use that shit anymore. I just use the 2 in 2 out symphony desktop.

After getting the full Monty Black Lion Audio mod to my X6, I discovered the converters were not really the issue with the Apollo's, it was a host of other things. Now my Apollo sounds more like Dangerous Music's converters. The Symphony is a little softer and bigger, more pleasing than the regular Apollo's. So it depends what you're really looking for. I mixed a friend's album with the post BLA mod x6, and I was able to get where I wanted to go in 1/2 to 2/3 the amount of time.

Some times different is as important as better.

Some times different is as important as better. Kind of what I’m thinking too I think you have to decide if you really want to go the summing route, and to be honest even if you were to instead invest $500 in a 2 ch AD I don’t think your going to beat the symphony, at that price it’s pretty much just going to be different, but this way you also get the DA.
