I could definitely add a couple to that list. Call it "Tools that are actually making life better". It seems that the plug-in ennui has set in. For many, the Black Friday sales were as welcome as post-Thanksgiving indigestion. For others, they were a seeming treasure trove but which left an aftertaste of excess and consumption in their mouths. But it wasn't all bad, was it? I'll start. H/t lowlou for the idea. Black Salt Audio Low Control. Upright bass can be a bitch, especially when it's recorded in a small booth, or the bass is weird, or the player's technique is weird or the action is too low. If conditions aren't right on the day, you can get a pretty funky tonal balance or you get a over-dynamic low end that sticks out no matter what you do to contain it and HP filtering doesn't always work. Low Control is really just the low band of a MB comp and Renn Bass shoved into one plug-in, but the people who wrote this thing really got a lot of things right, and one of those is how fast it was to dial in a problematic, lumpy bass track that I was having trouble taming. First you sort out the woofy part of the signal with compression and level, then you can add harmonic enhancement to bring back some of what you put on a leash. Could I have done the same thing with software I already own? Yes. But to me it's a quick dial and I'm on to other things. I'll use it on every bass track now to some degree, before reaching for a compressor or EQ. Izotope RX 10. I've owned RX since version 4 but rarely used it unless I needed to de-noise a guitar amp. But having got into the batch workflows and the spectral noise editor, it is a great tool to affect your original files (making safeties of course) so you don't have to mess with relinking or replacement. Great to prep takes for comping. Great to get rid of almost anything unwanted, except lack of talent. There is nothing else quite like it. Not a plug-in, but a tool definitely making my life better: Hardware EQs. I've rejected the hybrid mix thing for a long time. Recall recall recall, I keep telling myself. But I started buying (and borrowing) a small collection of hardware EQs and my general feeling is that I not only get there faster, but I can go further and it still sounds better. I can't brighten with digital EQ like I can with analog ones. Now to start filling a rack with them! Don't get me wrong, I use plug-in EQs all day and there are great designs, but there is a finishing touch the hardware puts on the tracks that is elusive with the software. It's been a real revelation. EDIT: gotta say something about the way the plug-in makes me behave. It says "you've got a million choices of how to process this or how to solve a problem. Go on! Try them all. Combine a ton of crap until it sounds good. The HW EQ just outdoes it all in one box somehow. It's maybe just a different mindset.

Hofa Time Tracker
Not really music related, but Soundly for sound design.
Samply for feedback/colab work
Session Wire for live mixing over the web/colab work.
Pretty much any of the denoising plugins these days, all of them are crazy good.
Streamdeck

Plugins I can't live without...
-----
CTRLR is the one that comes to mind first. It's a special case, of interest for hardware users only. With CTRLR you design you own vst MIDI controllers to control hardware. You create panels, quite simply, and you can send the panel settings from your daw to your MIDI-equipped tools. So first you think that this is great for hardware synth, sure of course, but There are a lot of hardware mixing FX out there that have great MIDI implementations. Hundreds. CTRLR panels allow to recall settings, automate... What I like to do also, is to create "dummy" recall VST (no MIDI functions) to note the settings of the many processors that don't have MIDI, for later manual recall. Some take pictures, or have recall sheets ; it's the same idea. For Windows 10, my advice is to use CTRLR 5.3.201. It's the only one stable on Reaper.
-----
Scaler EQ also, brand new eq that is very interesting. It bases its action on musical principles. It's excellent at substracting out of key mud.
-----
I try to use mostly hardware these days, but I like to contain peaks with Gold Clip just before signals going out of the interface. Pretty unique, in the way it restrains peaks, but leaving untouched microdynamics ! I'm pretty sure the LAAL limiter plugin that is not released yet will allow the same kind of advanced limiting.

Raising Jake Studios - Stereo Swapper (at the bottom of the page and it's free) -- www.raisingjakestudios.com/utility%20and%20fx.htmlThis week I've been fighting effects of a cold that left one of my ears plugged, but I'd bet that most of us don't hear the exact same way out of both ears, so even when my ears are "normal", it's sometimes surprising when you "flip" the left and right to reverse your stereo image. This free tool also does mono at the click of a button. Just remember to disable it before you bounce.

Izotope rx Izotope tonal balance control (super handy visual feedback that has become an indispensable problem solver) Mdw drc2 Melodyne (sorry🤷🏻♀️) Massey drt Lately I’m really liking the new tdr arbiter plugin I love the arbiter and the infrasonic and elliptical filters. so many tracks have low end garbage that must be removed that contributes to the timbre. Now I can get harmonics of the trash, approximate the timbre, and take out the trash. They're like MaxxBass but a million times better.

Very top of my list is Metric AB. I think I’d rather have stock DAW plug-ins and that vs all my plugs and not that. Maybe that’s overstating it a bit but it (Metric AB) is really indispensable to me.
It’s kind of a toss up between a bunch of stuff after that. I’m really leaning on/loving BSA Silencer and Clipper. I just bought a big bundle of UAD stuff after being out of it for years. Remains to be seen which I’ll come to really rely on, but API Vision, UA 175/176, and Sound City are early standouts. LS Reverberate 3 is also up there for me.

Techivation “M” plugins: The first spectral problem-solvers I’ve used that don’t suck the life out of tracks.
Slate VSX: Checking a mix on a boombox/car/club/mastering studio with the click of the mouse is real helpful.
Having great mics at my home studio: Less work for the first two things.

Basically a dynamic eq without a threshold. Great problem solver for leveling poorly balanced tracks.

Someone gave me an old Novation Launchpad MK1 it has 80 little rubber buttons on it. It appeared to be near on junk as I don't Ableton Live. Then Cubase Pro 12 introduced "MIDI Remote Control Manager" which is true genius and let's you create MIDI maps for anything instantly. I made dozens of shortcuts for all my edit, tracking, composing shortcuts and favorite features in Cubase and now I'm editing composing and editing everything at an amazing speed. Steinberg are so, so clever as programmers - it's made a little freebie remote into a fantastic Cubase remote controller .... .... that's a tool that makes life easier

Hmmm... All I could think of was : 37" Baja Boss tires Off-Road Nav system Steering Stabilizers Battery Powered Chain Saw I kind of hate my battery powered chainsaw. But, I’m also not using it with the right batteries (I need the higher capacity ones and my few of those are goners). My brother and I just bought our family cabin and I’m going to get a Stihl Farm Boss for up there. The electric saw is not up for any real timber work. It’s pretty convenient for small branches and scrub brush type stuff though.

That's exactly what I use it for. I have no need for a workhorse saw that will fell and clean up big trees. The Dewalt 16" with a HD battery has been awesome for me so far..... Even cutting up a big oak that was 20"+ diameter that a storm blew down. Took a couple of charges, but one charge is enough to keep me going long enough that I want to quit and go back into the studio. I want to get their 12" which will take the same batteries for jeeping trail trash stuff.....

UAD ATR-102. I could make an album with only this one plug-in. It makes everything better in a natural way. From a demo to record in the right hands.

Since I got the IK Mixbox a while back my workflow in Reaper has been way less opening and closing windows. It’s a plugin of a 500 lunchbox with 70 modules, up to 8 at a time, including a few amp sims and reverb/modulation. There’s a wet/dry for each module if you need it, good for overdriving and blending.
The time saver is I can build a strip, like say 1081 > SSL expander> 1176>LA2A> Delay> Verb> Fairchild.. and all the knobs to all of them are in the same window, and wet dry is there too. While there are better plugin emulations of course, I find I’m too lazy to use them and just been using Mixbox. It’s just faster to access a wide range of everything I’d normally use.
I’ll get a sound I like with a typical chain, and CNTL+drag to copy to the next track, great starting point

Hi Martin, I’d love to know how you use it effectively. I have always been unlucky when using tape sims. How are you gain staging it and where in the chain?

Hi Lee, I use it first on the 2 bus. Either 30 ips or Smooth Vocal setting, then lower noise, tweak a bit and I get some gain, some glue, and a more natural sound, less harshness. On occasion I use it on one track. It's the best slap back echo I've found.

The one thing that really speeds up my workflow is TouchOSC running on an old Android tablet. I use Nuendo and having all my most used processes on a tablet sure speeds things up. Also, even though I own RX, I use Spectralayers more, as I can open it in Nuendo for super fast editing.
