I have more plugins than I will ever use. Many of them are UAD which is better than "good enough" for anything I'll ever need a plugin for. I know all these plugin companies are trying to keep their doors open but how many different versions of an 1176 or EQP1 do you really need? I would say one or maybe two. The Fab Filter stuff has been great for me. I can't think of A N Y T H I N G else I will ever need for a plugin. Waves Bundle ver. 462 has absolutely no interest to me. I have some Waves plugins but never EVER use them.
Unless some company comes out with a jalepeno-cheddar-diode stereo convolution microphone invisiliner compregnetator plugin, I am done buying plugins now and forever. I'd much rather save my money and spend it on another hardware EQ. I won't have to update that the next time an OS moves up a notch.

Agree with you but would amend it to... "I am so over new plugin EMULATIONS."
I'm still all ears when it comes to utility plugs that can help me work faster. Case in point, finally picked up a MidSide plugin from Goodhertz. I do tons of M/S and had been doing it the old fashioned way, big time saver with a few nifty bonus features I might actually use.
But yeah, another 1176? Thanks, I'm good.

Similar here. I am very interested in DSP tools that do something new or better. BSA Silencer is a tool like that for me. It lets me use my drum mics more creatively and sculpt the sounds I want.

The best plugins are the ones that make you say "why can't my DAW just do this?"

Yep, I'm in the same boat. Some of my favorite mixes were made with SW that was released two decades ago. If I can't make a great mix with generic ass Waves/FF/UAD plugs, it probably means the source material sucks.
And for sure, that's where innovative tools come in handy. Things like Soothe, Spiff, DSEQ, bx refinement, Unharsh, etc. The beauty of digital in 2023 is being able to salvage poor recordings that would've otherwise been totally unusable.
Also super into modulation & glitch FX plugins these days. Anything to create ear candy or interesting textural elements. Really having fun with that at the moment.

I have a hard time following both hardware and software releases.
It could be interesting to create a new mega thread where people drop their favorite plugins they can't work without with a few words explaining what makes them special and useful.

I could definitely add a couple to that list. Call it "Tools that are actually making life better".

Hi, my name is Moose and its been a year since I bought my last plug in.
No joke. And I'd bet the farm that I have the smallest plug collection of any working pro on this or any other forum. I've got about two dozen from UAD that I actually use... couple soundtoys things... all the stock Logic stuff... and that's really about the extent of it.
I simply don't need all that much... ok, partly because I do use a console & analog outboard... but I simply don't have that much interest in shooting out 15 different versions of a Neve EQ. Bores me to tears.
Crazy long time ago a good friend had just wrapped a session at I think it was Electric Ladyland or Hit Factory and said he realized that when he was in a nice room basically the only EQ available was the one on the desk. Yeah there's a couple things outboard, like a pair of EQP and maybe a set of API 550 but for the most part? Even in the best studios in the world if you need to EQ something you've got one choice - the desk.
Contrast is when he brought that project back to his shop to mix there's about 50 different flavors of EQ to choose from... its overwhelming... so maybe just pick one and get on with things.
Good plan!

There is definitely an unnecessary amount of overlap these days... as others have mentioned with the umpteenth emulations of hardware boxes. Useful plugs are things like Auto Align, Soothe, VocAlign, etc.... things that help you solve the mundane stuff quicker so you can get back to being creative.
The only new plugs I consider these days are reverbs, since they can at least theoretically offer some sort of new or unique flavor.

I kinda get it. And I say this as someone who just bought a boatload of plug-ins. But I hadn’t bought any in at least eight years. So in a sense I was making up for lost time. Still, I have to go through all of them and learn them and figure out which ones will work for me and what won’t stick long term. And there are still a few things I think I want like a Trident or Helios channel strip, but really, how often would I actually use them? So yeah, I kinda get it.
Cheers, Geoff

If I have a version/emulation that I like, I completely ignore the other brands when they come out with their version. I do have a couple things duplicated in Waves and UAD, and that comes from migrating to a new computer, with a traded UAD system, but still finishing 2 records that I knew had the Waves on them, so I paid one last WUP...
A few months ago I tried a few "digital" EQs, and some were nice, and one had an interesting AI thing, but I didn't end up getting any of them.
I think I'm gonna buy the UAD Helios for $29 and then invite some friends over to do some Stones covers.

I was looking at getting the Sonnox, but it doesn’t have sidechain functionality and that was a non-starter for me. I like to use ambient kit mics and sidechain gate them to specific drums for specific vibes and Silencer makes this so much easier and better sounding than other things I’ve tried.

Unless some company comes out with a jalepeno-cheddar-diode stereo convolution microphone invisiliner compregnetator plugin, I thought I saw the serrano version....maybe it was the habañero version, ...not sure, of this in the grocery aisle at sweetwater. I am just beginning my plugin journey and am trying not to "collect" them unless I have a specific need or see how I can use them (I am a songwriter creating demo's in a pro tools carbon setup.) For my 1073 fix, I am currently using the Lindell 80 series and I like what it does. Along that line, I am probably going to pony up for the Blackbird collection at some point in the future and then I think I am done for those. I did get Soundtoys because you couldn't do a search without someone mentioning them. I will probably hunt for an 1176 thing at some point and I hope thats the end of it, mostly. I am probably wrong.

Same. I seem to think I have everything I could possibly ever need at this point. If I had to rebuild my system, out of a hundred or so plugs, there's a dozen or so I'd definitely reinstall and actually use.

I'd much rather save my money and spend it on another hardware EQ. I won't have to update that the next time an OS moves up a notch.
I bought a UAD quad when it came out. Never bought any additional plugins, because none of them was better than the hardware I either bought or created. I don't even had it hooked up to a computer anymore after I saw how their plugin trail versions baited me to use them then I would compare it with real stuff. Even the cheap stuff I bought like that Klark 1176 clone that sounds like a cleaner version of the 1176 blue stripe that sat above it in my compressor rack.
I got tired of chasing upgrading the computer too. Just so the newer version of a DAW would work, and there is really no changes to it besides allowed me to get plugins that would run like crap until I updated the computer again.
I got picked on at Gearslutz, Gearspace or what ever they want to call themselves these days because I wished for a digital mixer with a full DAW built in with its own DSP and plugin engine and hard drive storage with a real hard drive controller instead of some USB port solution. Because I want to kick the computer out of the music studio.
I think I have about 300 plugins, some good, some bad, and I find it interesting that a free reverb plugin (and others) was better than ones that came in on purchased packages. Some of them I can't use anymore because of the OS I upgraded to on that machine. Not to mention all the consumer computer phishing setups like a Microsoft account, or the weather widget and news and other things that caused it to not run good anymore. I'm sorry, I don't have the need for real time metering because I mix with my ears, not my eyes. I do have an older CAD computer that is running windows server and I loaded the DAW on that and it runs better than the computer 10 years newer. I find it all a rip off.
Sorry for my rant. I feel better now.

Do you guys rate their plugin 1176s? Yeah, they're good. Still among the top of the heap. They used to be the absolute benchmark, but I think the PA Purple MC77 is as good. But $39 for the three revisions in the UAD bundle is fantastic.
