Resistance was futile. Now who has a cheap M88 windscreen recommendation?

As an amateur radio enthusiast, I was intrigued by Bob Heil's designs. I had a conversation with him about 20 years ago (?? shit!). He was a profound evangelist for large diaphragm designs and had zero interest in anything less than 1" -- holds for jokes...

Resistance was futile. Now who has a cheap M88 windscreen recommendation? The official windscreen is around 30 or 40 dollars. You can also use an sm7b's larger foam windscreen or the re20/320/27 windscreen, but neither really goes around and protects the rear and they both barely stay on (loose). Likewise, the shure sm58 gray one will fit but it offers even less protection and has gaps at the rear.

for M88 kick duty I use an Auray LDC cheap foamy with a twist tie around the bottom to fully cover rear of the capsule no candy color choices but it costs about $8 and works just fine

I will bump here - any users of the Telefunken M82 on kick? Comments? I have one . . . it's very aggressive and doesn't have the tonal depth of something like a U47FET, but very useful for hard and heavy music. The 350 dip switch is more aggressive sounding than what the specs indicate and the high-end boost switch definitely adds a TON of point. I don't recommend it for country, pop, blues, general rock or other forms. But for heavy music? Hard to beat. Beats a D6 and D112 IMHE.

Set flat, it's a bit like a Shure SM52 . . . not as round as a D12e or an RE20 or 320, not as boomy as a D112 or pointy as an Audix D6. Close to the honest6y of an RE27 (the single most underrated LDD mic in existence because it it the finest LDD mic in existence).

I will bump here - any users of the Telefunken M82 on kick? Comments? I too am curious on A/B with M88, let's throw in an SM7B, RE20*, 421, Alien8 and C8 as well! I'm looking for a mic to pair with 47FET on res head, bass cabinet, even e gtr. For a lot of sources, one mic is never enough for me, phase is just part of the job (arguably the crux of any job!) * Ward, I used 27s alongside 20s for a few years. Never had a breakdown with any, but I felt the 20 reached deeper and the 27 felt more like a PR40. We had a few of each so I don't think it was a one-off. All went through lots of different pre topologies. Welcome further thoughts on differences for you, I want to say you're a bit of an evangelical for 27s, yah?

I'd throw in the EV N/D868. We have most of the usual suspects but I'd say the 868 winds up on at least 2/3 of our recordings.

I got my M88 in the mail today. I’m kind of surprised I’m that it doesn’t come with a foam filter. The M201 that I bought a while back came with one, and it’s big enough that I think it would work with the M88.
II might try the M88 on a couple of kick hits just to see what the tonality is like. I’ve got a Beta 52 and ND868 that I normally use on kick duty, and am curious to see how it compares.
I also bought one of those cheap used Beyerdynamic M69 on Adorama. Mine has markings from the NYU film dept, so I guess the batch of used mics are sourced from there. Probably less useful as a kick mic, but it’s interesting on guitar amp.

I just bought a $6 filter and use an elastic to keep the back closed... cheap and works great. The tonality is pretty neutral but warm, unlike the Heil. The Heil is neutral and hard, IMO.
The M88 will require more EQ than a dedicated kick mic for most stuff, but takes it well and sounds nice and punchy when dialed in. For rock kicks, I usually got the 250hz slider on an API 560 all the way down, but it sounds great.

I definitely want to see how this does for vocals, guitar, and percussion. On there for $299 now. Still $200 below Sweetwater. I think it's because the redesign new ones have the old-school silver grill? But supposedly the only difference is cosmetic. I love my vintage m88, this is mucho tempting.

Hmm... that's appealing. Cuz my M88 (70's model) is a plosive machine. It's kind of amazing actually, it's like they wanted it to be that way.

I think the TG's got some better shock mounting in the headbasket... But added mesh does seem smart. I also think for $250-300 new, the TG version is a pretty compelling purchase. Especially for the studio where it's not hard to make sure there's a windshield in place for kick drum use. P.S. - ProAudioStar is pretty good about negotiating price if you submit an offer on eBay or Reverb.

The Shures are much studier but worse sounding usually. Still the Shure KSMs are more detailed yet woodier and harsher than the Beyerdynamic condensers ime. The Beyerdynamic ones are awesome in that they just work in the mix though but they don’t pick up as much of the performance which can be a big issue. I don’t buy Beyerdynamic products though. The one exception to Shure’s sturdiness I’ve experienced is the Beta 52. Still you can always just use an RE-20 (older with intact foam is better! Newer units lack the detail) and get a more natural kick anyway or use a PR-40 and get the detail but that high end boost that cuts in the mix but often needs to be eaten by something. I just use a broad shelf or U-he Satin honestly.

Under what situations have your diaphragms blown out? I believe the Touring Group (TG) updates were designed to make the basket more resistant to denting/damage caused by stage use. Personally, for studio use, I'm not looking for additional metal mesh -- there will certainly be a change in sound. Even with the additional mesh, Beyer is still recommending using the foamy windshield for bass drum use.
