Thinking of adding a kick drum mic that’s also versatile… maybe floor rim, vocals, guitar? Thoughts on these two?
Edit: My current go to kick mic is an RE320

I’m probably in the minority here but I never liked the m88 on kick. And the diaphragms tend to blow out from the wind over time. The m88 does sound pretty damn good most of the time on percussion, rack toms, bass cabs etc
Never heard the heil but quite a few people I know seem to like them.

For everything you're considering, I would also consider an EV RE27. It is one of my favorite mics. I bought mine in 1991 and it has been flawless for over 30 years. It's just gorgeous. Another that could be competing here is a Sennheiser 441

Buy a comparable Heil over a Beyer any day. Better customer service. Sturdier mics.

Another that could be competing here is a Sennheiser 441 I am going to split the difference between Ward and the original question, Steadman N90 the precursor to the Heil that used a RE20 capsule in a non Variable D side address format. So an RE 20 that looks like a condenser and has proximity effect. I do have to say while the RE20 has retained it’s value on the used market the RE320 and RE27 have not, unlike Ward I would not classify any as better just different & would have no problem owning all 3, wait at one point I did! Oh on the cheap I had a small town radio station group buy Sennheiser E602’s for voice, they loved them till Clear Channel bought them out.

Get an Alien 8! Best inside kick mic out there! Cool for bass and guitar amps and one of only a few fig 8 dynamics
If you really want a PR40, I’ll sell you mine. I haven’t used it in years

Putting one inside a kick drum might be a little scary for me, esp b/c I love them on vocals...

I've had pretty shit luck with modern Beyerdynamic products (microphones, and especially headphones) holding up. Don't think I've ever had a pair of headphones last more than a couple years (in some cases, a couple sessions) while I've had Audio-Technica headphones that are 30+ year old and still rocking.
I have a Heil PR30 and PR40 and they are nice options but the original Sennheiser e602 is my favorite inside kick mic. It's the only mic I always bring with me to another studio.

I have blown 2 vintage M88's on kick drum over the last few decades. Never again.

You have to get the Beyerdynamic (or similar, I imagine) windscreen that surrounds the mic. plinker has talked about it a couple times here. Jim? Details?

I own both. I'd go with the M88 no question... its not even close. The M88 is a superior kick, tom, and bass amp mic and also sounds killer on guitar. Its on something every session.
The Heil is a great doorstop. Like a previous poster said of theirs, it sits in its case. I take it out every so often to try to find something it is good on and it sounds meh on most everything. Boxy on kick and toms with a hard sound. OK for voice over, but still would take an SM7B over it.
For those having reliability issues with the M88 inside the kick, Beyer recommends using a windscreen to prevent the capsule from getting blown when miking at the port.

I don’t personally use M88’s on kick drum…I have one and I “think” it still works…I pull it out on occasion for bass amps. Most of my issue has been with headphones, and my M160’s…i don’t think they used to be so delicate…I record stuff like Princeton’s on 4 and had one die and they used to be able to handle a Marshall stack

Original M88s IMO sound how you want a Kik to sound without an identifiable flavour. However they seem to ultimately cave as others have said. Cheers, Ross

The M88 is my favorite mic in the world. I don't really love it on BD unless the front head is off, or maybe as the outside mic. That said, buy an M88, then get another, and another. They just work on so many sources. Toms and amps are probably my favorite uses. Oh and Leslie, and trumpet, and snare for more meat then most mics. Vocals (especially in a room with other players) can work. Just get 'em.

The M88 will give you a very different kick sound to a "standard" made for the kick mic.
It will focus the low mids more and give you a very articulate kick sound as opposed to a Bonham 24" kick "flap & boom"
Yes, you can EQ it but mics sound best doing what they're naturally best at.
The M88 is THE desert island mic though, name another mic you can stick in a kick, then in front of a bass cab, a guitar cab, congas, a tambourine and then stick on a tall stand and cut a world class rock vocal. I can't think off one.
I have a silver basket early 80's example and it's a lovely mic with a very cool provenance.
My very dearest friend was a tour guy and my 88 came off an Genesis ex tour rig.
The question he never could answer was, did my M88 live in Phil or Chester's kick drum or front of stage for Phil's vocals. In my mind I go with vocals :-)

I received an update from Beyer recently, as they relaunched the m88 mic It now has the triple layered silver grill again, which they claim is slightly more pop resistant, and yes, for kick drums they state to use their filter, which wraps around to protect also the back of the diaphragm global.beyerdynamic.com/m-88.htmlglobal.beyerdynamic.com/ws-59-az.html

If it’s for kick drum only, the Beyer TG D70 is pretty solid.

The original windscreen for the Beyer M88 is rare, but any decent pop shield will do. I didn't use the M88 much on kick as i got enough other mics but i like it on many things. The EV RE27 would also do nice (i only have the old one from the 90s) but it has a broader cardioid pattern and less proximity effect than the M88, which might .. or might not suit you. What do you want your kickdrum mic to do? Neutral? More "oomph"?
