I received an update from Beyer recently, as they relaunched the m88 mic It now has the triple layered silver grill again, which they claim is slightly more pop resistant, and yes, for kick drums they state to use their filter, which wraps around to protect also the back of the diaphragm global.beyerdynamic.com/m-88.htmlglobal.beyerdynamic.com/ws-59-az.htmlyeah and they're not going to repair the old one or the tg when it blows. or this one when the warranty period is up. if you're lucky, they'll toss it and send you a new mic for something around the wholesale cost from them. and since they're jacking their prices up a good 80%, you'll pay more than you paid new for the old one.

I got mine refurbished for 180 bucks, good as new. Same serial number.

I've had pretty shit luck with modern Beyerdynamic products (microphones, and especially headphones) holding up. Don't think I've ever had a pair of headphones last more than a couple years (in some cases, a couple sessions) while I've had Audio-Technica headphones that are 30+ year old and still rocking. I have a Heil PR30 and PR40 and they are nice options but the original Sennheiser e602 is my favorite inside kick mic. It's the only mic I always bring with me to another studio. I imagine you already know this, Sean, but there's the whole windscreen thing about the m88 in a kick drum. You have to get the Beyerdynamic (or similar, I imagine) windscreen that surrounds the mic. plinker has talked about it a couple times here. Jim? Details? Yes -- the capsule is sensitive to blasts of air, including coming in from the rear. Most foamies don't cover the rear section. From what I've gathered, this is really only a problem when mic'ing right at the port-hole -- where the air is moving quickly in and out. Beyer sells a $35 foamy that wraps around the entire capsule...and then some. It's giant and ugly, but you won't notice it inside the drum

I wish I had waited on the M88. I bought one like a year or two ago, but that throw-back grill just looks sleek.

FWIW - ProAudioStar is selling new M88s for $299. However, QC concerns people are mentioning have me reconsidering a Beyerdynamic. Sound samples of the Heil on kick don't do much for me. Maybe it's not the time for a new kick drum for me. RE320 has been doing just fine for awhile.

I am going to split the difference between Ward and the original question, Steadman N90 the precursor to the Heil that used a RE20 capsule in a non Variable D side address format. So an RE 20 that looks like a condenser and has proximity effect. Never knew about this microphone for some reason, nor the capsule pedigree.
Found one on reverb, cheap enough to toss money at it and see what's up. I really like the idea of a side-address dynamics.
On a simliar topic, the Figure 8 could be one mic that you could try jacob; it's one half of the Alien8, but I would warn that I think it would bbe be radically different than the M88 and PR40 in terms of sonics.

SNIP Maybe it's not the time for a new kick drum for me. RE320 has been doing just fine for awhile. Jacob, I have a 320 also . . . and whilst it's fairly good, I can't say I'm overly impressed with the stock options. Have you considered the mod? I hope Johnkenn doesn't mind this link to the purple site Click here for the mod discussion

Man your post made me look to see if anyone I knew was still at beyer to see if you could switch grills. It only confirms I’m old because everyone I knew has been gone for at least 10 years!

I also wouldn’t lose sleep if I sold my PR40. It’s good on everything but it’s never my favorite on anything. So maybe that is what you’re looking for? Something that can be used on kick drum but also everywhere else as well. Bass cab, Toms, guitar cabs, it’s actually not a bad vocal mic either. I actually use this most a lot of times as my scratch vocal mic when we cut the bands live. A lot of times the singers are a little suprised on how good it sounds on the scratch vocal. But anyway, I personally like the PR30/PR31 a lot better for drums specifically. I like where the attack is in the midrange on drums and it has more low end punch. I think the newer ALG D12VR is a killer kick drum mic. Are you trying to get a good blend of attack and low end from 1 mic? If so, this is always my recommendation to people. Just inside the hole. Killer chesty low end and good attack but you’ll probably need to EQ it like most kids I drums but it takes EQ very well. It’ll work for every style. If you wanted something more scooped and modern, more subby kind of low end, - Beta 52. If you’re looking for a 2-3 kick drum setup that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I also prefer my PR30 to my PR40 I'd like to know more about why, from you and knucklehead89I used a PR40 at Webster University a couple of times and especially this last year thought their API I thought it was kinda interesting.

Maybe it's not the time for a new kick drum for me. RE320 has been doing just fine for awhile. I’ve had 3 m88s for about 8 years and have never had a problem with any of them. They feel quite bulletproof and substantial. Makes a 57 feel like a toy. Put them inside kick drums all the time without a screen. Never even thought to put one on there. Snag one if you think it’ll do the trick for you.

PR30 is a little more present / midrange forward and sounds pretty good on a snare (hard to place sometimes do to its size) and electric guitars or bass amps where growl is what you are going for. My PR40 is pretty much lives on the low rotor of the Leslie

Don't worry about it - I'd hate if someone went that far out of their way just to change something that going to get covered up by a windscreen anyways!
Funny enough with the prior mention/receipt of their windscreen, my order just came in for two. One's immediately going on an M88 that's had EV foam windscreen (RE20/27/320/etc.), and I figure one on a M160 should work fine when used for certain applications.
Despite prior mentions, the windscreen is still larger than I expected. I'm guessing you can position it towards the front to add a little space between the foam and mic for more effective plosive protection?

I am not a huge fan of the Heil mics - their upper mids/top just doesn't sound right to me.
i love my M88 - i used it on kick exactly one time and it sounded great until it broke on day two of tracking. Had it repaired and it sounds good as new. Its killer on bass and guitar cabs. Maybe I'll try again with their wind screen.
As others have said, the Alien8 is awesome on kick. can be cool on guitar cabs with a second mic added.
