playing around a bit with luna at the moment and i did a quick demo (acoustic guitars and vocals). did 2 mixes in luna.
one with just dropping in the neve summing, the tapes (studer on guitars and vocals, ATR at the mixbus) as they where. no real mixing, just a lo-cut, 3db of GR on the vocal bus with ua la2a silver (the free one)
Mix Luna neutral: https%3A//soundcloud.com/zinzin/luna_nevetape_neutral_mix/s-Fpl7d4DAW8O%3Fsi%3D59e10aa2a44b4d259182f58404ae0373%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharing Mix 2 is the same as mix 1: using luna, but this time pushing summing and tape to 0db VU to add more character.
Mix Luna pushed:
https%3A//soundcloud.com/zinzin/luna_nevetape_pushed_mix%3Fsi%3D59e10aa2a44b4d259182f58404ae0373%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharing
and than i did a quick mix in logic. i used softube british class a on the acoustic guitars and vocal busses to simulate the neve summing, using just the lo-cut. than added softube tape model a (studer) aiming at 0db VU. again only some compression with MJUC on the vocalbus. and in place of the summing i used klanghelms SDRR in desk mode. on the mixbus i used softube tape model b (to simulate luna`s ATR tapemachine.
Mix Logic:
https%3A//soundcloud.com/zinzin/logic_mix%3Fsi%3D59e10aa2a44b4d259182f58404ae0373%26amp%3Butm_source%3Dclipboard%26amp%3Butm_medium%3Dtext%26amp%3Butm_campaign%3Dsocial_sharing
they turned out quiete different ... i am used to logic so setting all up is very quick to me. setting up busses with the tape and summing is easy peasy in luna as well, but pushing everything to 0 VU and playing around with the tape formulas etc. took some time. i did not use black friday offers to get into the uad world yet. i am still testing if it really brings something "new" for me to the table.
so here are the sounds. what do you think?

I’ll listen later, but I thought it wasn’t so much that Luna achieved a result the others couldn’t, it was that Luna with its built in setup made me reach for things I probably wouldn’t normally reach for. Like - initially I thought it just sounded better. Then I realized that I could match it adding a few plugs here and there. But there’s something to be said for Luna if it makes you choose things that initially sound better. If any of that makes sense.

luna gets a - dare i say - analog sound very quickly. smoothing taming transients very quickly. i think with luna i wouldn‘t use compression that much as the summing and tape one can put on the busses already can do a lot in that regard. so it certainly is a different workflow, a quicker one if thats the result one is after. i didnt try to match luna with logic, i too have the feeling i could get close but it would take me longer. the bundles are tempting because of the prices but i have a pultec a 1176 a ooto comp a tape. so nothing really need to add to my plugin arsenal. so it would essentially be the api or neve summing and the workflow. dont know yet if its worth for that alone. also considering some still missing editing and midi functions. i am really not a fan of using 2 daws …
but please, opinions regarding the sound is welcome.

I’ll listen later, but personally i have never taken to luna ,tried it 4-5 times.
The elephant in the room is no inserts so using your ob during mixing is a bust.
I mix/master itb but use an ssl clone on my 2 bus.
currently am comparing that to ua capital mastering compressor: reat of mix/ plugs the same: juries out.

It should be a fundamentally different thing, since Luna summing emulations can actually mess with pan law and the summing architecture itself, where using console-y plug-ins in other DAWs means they have to just sit on top of that ‘regular’ DAW summing. That said, I have no experience with whether that actually delivers results that I would like or not. Or whether it sounds very different at all. Definitely something I’ll mess with at some point. And I’ll check this comparison out too, thanks for posting.

the mixes (well they are not really mixed) turned out really different. luna adds color really quick. although i am not a fan of all the different slots: summing, tape, utility, send, inserts whereas in logic theres just plugins and sends.

I find the whole luna summing a misnomer as to. E real summing is what happens in an analog board or an analog summing box. The combining ld digital files, digitally isn’t actually summing in the analog sense, then adding in further digital artifacts to make it sound like analog summing: bit of a mug’s game. When i tried luna, always had this nagging question, why do I want my mixes sounding like everybody else’s ?

I am the opposite……if I take my raw tracks……send them to busses……eg drums, bass, guitars, keys, harms, vocal….then to a mix bus……and I instantiate api summing on all those….and put the ATR102 on the mix bus…the api 2500 on the mix bus….doing 1 to 2 dB of comp….its most of the heavy lifting done…..
I really love the way it works.
Cheers

Cheers Wiz yes. thats how i see luna. quick and colorful. about the logic mix: setting klanghelm SDRR with 3 transformer stages instead only one, it also colors every bus more. but still luna has A LOT of color.

This is how I felt with MixBus 32C - color comes easy, you can move to other things. However, the interface proved too clumsy for me, especially with automation. I don't know how good/bad Luna's interface is with everything, admittedly.

Listened to the tracks. I like the Luna versions better.
Sounds like a cool track! Reminds me of something off of Hunky Dory.

Reminds me of something off of Hunky Dory. its a harry styles song: „sign of the times“. not a fan but this song is a popgem. i like logics version because its more open but i also like luna pushed a lot. but i am not used to lunas shortcuts and logics dont work at all. and it seems to always need internet connection to have the summing extensions work. i have ilok cloud but it seems not to work. i WILL NOT mix with permanent internet connection on.

So, I too preferred this luna mix more body and force, but I guess I am just not a fan of that level of whatever you call it: smoothness ?
I liked the performance and there is nothing wrong with the mix.
I had my first album professionally ( recorded in logic here with my symphony and ob) mastered through burl, the ME's gear and to a real Ampex 102. I feel like UA with luna is trying to get that sound but it just sounds too homogenized to me. To each their own !
thx for posting, a fav song of mine !

i was close to buying the luna pro bundle with api summing extension and tape and api vision for 199$. but after some good further testing did not buy it. i can get really close to it with just what i have: logic, softube tape and klanghelm sdrr in desk mode. the rest is in the mixing. so i am a good boy, i did buy NOTHING during all the black friday/week/months sales. ;-)
i am so used to logics and its shortcuts and with my x-touch controler i am fast enough. didnt want to learn a new DAW. the luna pro bundle was a really good price but i already have a pultec an 1176 a la2a a tape plugin. so no need for a second or third version of the same. and luna, as a DAW, still has some missing features.

Picked up Luna. Had the demo, only farted around with it a little.
Watched some Luna vids last night, grabbed the full version and am giving it a go now, for real. Routing works great summing with the Big Six. I'm using the API summing in addition to summing externally. If it sounds good, it is good. We'll see. Trying to use the tape sims and channel saturation to round off transients as some of you have mentioned. Besides missing folder functionality, I haven't had any issues yet.
Others still using it?
Edit; i really like the security of complete saves as you edit and mix. Surprising. Waveform editing and Melodyne is going just fine with Luna.

The luna sounds like its using a different pan law than the logic

Until Luna can comp and edit as well as Logic, I'm not interested. Besides, I really don't feel like buying more plug-ins for questionable results.

I can't say for sure which it is, Big6, Luna, Me.... but this mix has more space than any I have ever done. The separation is very different. Next I want to see if with the summing, saturation and tape emu's I can use less compression. I'm already being gentle with the B6 buss and channel compression, only tickling the meters on the SHMC.
Editing seems easy enough though with my projects of late, I don't really have any comping to do. I tried Logic before Luna but the master outs situation killed it for me. Can't use the Big6 with Logic.

Appears the ATR-102 has a nice effect, adding some punch and smooth upper mids. Not a lot of experience with tape (1 album in the 90's) but I wouldn't normally expect a tape sim to sound like this. It is just the default "Classic 250 smooth master"

I tried Luna again last night, and it definitely does have a sound. I do use Logic X, Protools, and Studio One Professional depending on certain projects and although I like all the DAW’s. Luna is definitely something pretty cool, however I need a bigger monitor with that mixing view.
