I've had mine on everything. Unfortunately I think I've been able to find a sweet spot in their settings for most anything, you just have to play around with them a lot on some sources.
I think people would have more issues with the style of music rather than the sound of the compressor itself.. i couldn't see them used a lot in something like jazz..

I feel exactly the same! If anything, as you say, their nature may make them too aggressive for a particular style, but......
They sure are useful...
What's been even more useful for me has been the 2:1 ratio on the Sound Skulptor fet clone I have...
No idea why that wouldn't be standard on an 1176...

Now, I've only had my 1176 for a short time but they seem to be excellent on everything I throw at them. Vocals, acoustic and electric strumming and picking, bass, all drums inc. overheads and synths. But as svart says they might not shine on jazz...or classical. Anyone use them on jazz or classical sessions?

Everything that's not a lead vocal or a drum bus.

Yeah - I'm not totally sold on using it on vocals...Love the way it compresses, but tends to add a little mid forwardness. Maybe in small doses...

I do not like them in a house. I do not like them with a mouse. I do not like them here or there. I do not like them anywhere.

they are a very aggressive sounding compressors, thats what makes them so cool, if you're recording rock there is nothing better IMO

I do not like them on guitars I do not like them on horns I do not like them on bass (technically a guitar I suppose) I do not like them on hand percussion, except a Rev F on tamborine. I do not like them on mandolin I do not like them on fiddle I cannot stand them on rap vocals even though a rev a/b is amazing on singing.

Ward,
For many of the things you don't like them on I might also choose something different (elop for example which could cover most if not all of those choices).
However, I find the 1176 overly aggressive only when I choose to use it that way...

I like them on my bench. I don't like them in my rack. I don't own any and rairly used them in studios that had them. I always found a better alternative. YMMV.

I guess I don't know how to use the sarcasm emoticon I totally respect Jim's straight wire with gain approach, I just don't happen to share it, and I loves me all manner of analog color on the way into the box and on the way out.... Jim is legendary for his worship of the clean approach and disdain for the color approach.... I wouldn't expect Jim to use an 1176.....

I have a version D Universal Audio 1176 on the bench now. It's now modified with very low noise transistors and a mostly polypropylene film cap signal path (I don't like the sound of electrolytic caps).
It still slams the same but the top end is far more open and smooth. Hiss is reduced as the output stage gain was also lowered -3 db. The one problem about them that I don't like is still there, that grainy midrange. It's more like a sandpaper sound and it would fatigue me pretty quick. I'd take an LA-3A or LA-2A over it any day of the week.

The reason I like an 1176 or any other vibey colored outboard is the same reason that 98 times out of a hundred I'd choose a strat, tele or a les paul over something like a Paul Reed Smith.

Electric guitars. I have all of UAD's 1176 series, so I can't judge properly until I get the Warm Audio 1176. I like what I've heard on acoustic guitars, and had success with the Waves Kramer 1176 on an Apple "Drummer" track recently, but on electrics, so far, they sound like you're running the signal through a post-CBS Fender amp, all edge, no charm.
I've liked what Cowboy did with his on vocals, so I'm keeping an open mind. On electric guitars, I have the UAD Fatso, and honestly, the free Phree Phuzz does just as good or even a better job and it takes less than 10 seconds to dial in and bring a little warmth to an in the box guitar.
