Yeah - I'm not totally sold on using it on vocals...Love the way it compresses, but tends to add a little mid forwardness. Maybe in small doses... I just bought my LA-2A and 1176 so this may be premature, but I am finding the 1176 more difficult than the LA-2A when it comes to vocals. The LA-2A seems magical in its ability to smoothly control the level with no pumping. The 1176 is harder to dial in- I tend to either get transient peaky vocals or pumping- but I probably need to work with it more. I love Tom Petty's vocals, which apparently are compressed by the 1176, and they are warm and controlled. So, it can be done.

If you just bought both, LA-2A and 1176, I think the trick is to run the output of the LA2A into the 1176, or vise versa, don't remember. That way, each one's compressing half as much, and smoothing out the other. Couldn't really give you any settings, just something you have to play with.

This is why I'm loving pairing a fet comp (cp5176) with an opto (elop) on vocals for the best of both worlds

I don't like it on much. so, there's that.
HARD sounding compressor. Throws everything forward in the speakers in a hard way. I find it mainly useful in RAWK mixes...something you need to sound more aggressive than it does.

I think I'm in the wrong thread b/c I love 1176's on many sources. It def can be a polarizing tool.

It def can be a polarizing tool. maybe JK should move this to the polarity/phase thread 8) IMO, there is no doubt 1176's are killer in the right spots, i have 8 channels under construction, i'm modeling them as close to the Serpent rigs as i can get them, as a matter of fact, i would have probably just bought the Splices if i'd of known they were coming out when i bought the DIY rigs, the most excellent side chaining and filtering parameters would take me a month of sundays to implement into these DIY's

Nice!
I ultimately will do the same with the Sound Skulptor comps...8 in a Radial a Workhorse would be killer for me...
I've also been bitten by the diy bug...Next up is a 24 channel API summing box...
