Not having to use the Walmart psu will be a blessing. The TG grew on me but I was a big fan of the REDD. Is the new psu from Target? I'm sure it will sound better, but someone should do a blind A/B test.

Here’s the new Type L next to the Original TG mic. Quite surprising how much smoother the Type L is on top, but still has that signature TG midrange character. I can see why they’re pushing the “ribbon” stuff in the marketing.

I’m glad you finally did a darker/smoother voiced mic, it’s really going to improve the lineup! Much more up my alley sonically, loving what I’m hearing so far!

Hmmm - wondering how the Type L compares to the Vanguard V13, which I thought was a smooth non-hyped (on the top end mic). (Vanguard V13 is a tube mic, but still, it seems to have some of the attributes that sound like the Type L.)

The original TG mic is obviously extremely versatile and has a lot of different sonic options. All that aside, I think it excels in the clarity department. I've yet to find another mic that's capable of being as clear as the first TG microphone. I had a really nice C12 clone here a couple of months back, which is another design that I would use "clarity" as a a descriptor. No fault to that C12 at all, but next to the original TG there was some stuff in the upper mid range that just sounded phasey in comparison. To me, the first TG mic is extremely full range and clear, with the ability to add a lot more character and voicing, or take it away. It can be a bit extreme, but there's ways to tone it down right on the mic if need be.
This new Type L has a lot of similarities, especially in the mid range character and harmonics. It's a lot more smoother though, and has more of an obvious "voicing" to it. It feels darker as harsher parts of the high end spectrum are toned in, but it still has a nice prominent mid range with something cool going on. It's not over emphasized though and doesn't sound "honkey" in the mid range like some Neumanns can sound. To me, they nailed the whole "warm" thing with the Type L. The really low low's that can get in the way never really seem to be there, there's a nice warmth and balance going into the mids that isn't muddy but is "clear" enough, and a nice little rise in the high mids right before you get the the "nasty" harsh areas. If all three of the Chandler microphones were introduced at the same time, I would have happily jumped on the Type L first, as it's a hell of a lot cheaper and more up my alley as far as mic voicing preferences. Another great option under $1k!
I'm starting to work on a video today for my favorite mics under $1k. The Type L is in there, along with the Soyuz 1973 and the Vanguard V4. Thankfully, they all sound really different from each other. I wanted to poke fun at Chandler's continued use of the "ribbon like sound" in their ads, but now that I've had it along side a few of my favorites... It's a fair statement. I was pretty surprised at how close I was able to get the R88 to sound like the Type L with just a little EQ in the video. I wasn't planning on putting that in there, but I'm starting to think that the Type L really does have a lot of qualities you would hear in a slightly processed and "finished" ribbon mic sound.

Thanks Matt! The L sounds great. My impressions of the original TG remain unchanged from years ago.

I'm releasing this tomorrow, but I'm putting it up on the forums early. Lot's of Type L content, along with the Soyuz 1973 and Vanguard V4. All are amazing mics and couldn't sound any different from each other. I highly recommend any and all of these, the price point is a blessing....

lest we forget this guy... I used it again today (B setting) on a tenor sax and it won out against a Cascade Vinjet (Lundahl xmr). The ribbon sound was great too, but the TG-L just had more mid-range vibe. Also used it for another singer/songwriter session yesterday (on vocal) and was super pleased with that too. Will I fire up my more expensive tube mics again? sure, but not today.

Chandler needs to take this and put it in the larger TG body, cram a whole TG preamp in there and do the solid state version of the REDD mic… I’m tempted to strip one of the 500 series TG preamps and this mic and just put it in a kit body, probably would be an easy fit. Power supply might be a little tricky though.

Yes, a multi pattern version would be killer. Cheers, Ross

Power supply might be a little tricky though. I find the preamp built into the mic cumbersome. I prefer for a mic to just be a mic. It's enough that I might want to walk out and change pattern, roll off or pad, I don't need to be out there messing with gain, too. Especially since I like to play around and see how the singer is singing on the first take or so to get levels.

Are those just the mikes ? Or what’s the signal chain ? Thx Bobby recorded this live into his SSL E console’s channels. There were only 80 Hz filters and no compression for each mic; the reverb is the UAD Capitol.

Been using the new mic couple days, i have some experience with the redd to, one of my fav mics..
Love to have this “baby redd” sounds amazing, specially for the price, i buy it for acoustic guitars but on vocals its also very very good for my taste

Just got this mic, surpisingly good for acoustic guitar. Have not tried it on electric guitar yet. is A or B preferred for that?

here's an artist I recorded where I used the TG Type L on vocals, harmonica and the pedal steel amp (bass was direct through EL-9 Mike-E and the acoustic guitar was a pair of 414's)
