Im really attracted to both the KU-5 and the type L . Can anyone with relevant experience give me a nudge either way (leaving price out of it). Uses would be vocal and fiddle sometimes on the same mic, often live ( but not necessarily) with a 3 piece band of acoustic guitar, upright bass, fiddle / Vox. Apparently the importer has a shipment of Ls arriving in Aus tomorrow with most already sold. Cheers, Ross

But I have the KU5A and it is fanatic for these uses

That’s all I can do for a while, hopefully it’s a good holdover! This is great video, straight to the point and well-produced. System B sounds really, really good. Haven't ever used a Chandler mic, but this one is definitely tempting.

that's a great sounding microphone Keep in mind it's going through a Coil preamp. Not saying it's not a great sound, but worth considering the preamp has a vibe

That’s all I can do for a while, hopefully it’s a good holdover! Thank you for doing this. System B is far more usable for acoustic guitar to be used in a mix context. System A is great and full and would work fairly well with a singer-singwriter on his/her own... but the woof is a little tiny bit too much. For the same reasons, System A works much better of electric guitar. The lower mid fullness gives the electric guitar and amp better feet to stand on. On vocals, it almost makes the microphone sound like System A is a K87 capsule and System B is an M7 cap. System A wild be my choice here as well.

Hello all...
I had the pleasure of visiting with Butch Walker at his studio and capturing—in real time—his first impressions of the TYPE L; this was on the fly so the audio is just room capture from my phone. If you're not familiar with Butch, you've probably heard the songs he's written and produced for other artists.

Nice to see Spock - just put down my dinero with Mick from Mixmasters here in Aus , this morning. He thinks they may be in his hands today. Haven't heard it in the wild so it's a big plunge considering the great choices in mics at the mo but at the end of the day I only live this one time! Cheers, Ross

Adam,
Everyone I've talked to has come to the same supportive conclusion: The L type acts like a ribbon mic when you need it but definitely has more immediacy.
It's on my list!
(I'm a microphone nutcase)

(I'm a microphone nutcase) This! Which is what I think Butch Walker's sentiment in the video, and similar to as paulcheeba describes as "immediacy". It's like a presence or the detail we try to get from pairing other mics with a ribbon on guitar cabs for example, where the TYPE L has both qualities inherently.

All copy and paste from my post on the purple site. Finally made it back to my place and starting to put the Type L through the ringer. We set this up last night and were pretty blown away by the results, it's a pretty ridiculous setup...
It's a stereo rig (if need be), along with an Austen Hooks Space Heater tube amp that has a power soak built in, so we're running that line out right into a Soyuz Launcher. Also have an AEA R88 as a close room mic.
-Matchless Baby with TG Type L into Coil Audio 286
-Custom Victor Projector a friend converted with a Supro Oval Speaker. Soyuz 1973 into Coil Audio 286
-Austen Hooks Space Heater line out to a Soyuz Launcher
-AEA R88 room into Coil CA70 into HendyAmps Michelangelo
I know that's a lot of stuff, but with ALL that crazy gear in the room, both of us are kind of smitten with the TG Type L. I've got it padded down in System B, the Matchless is only 6 watts and not very loud, but I wanted to send a lower signal going into the Coil preamps as I havn't done a lot of electric guitar through them yet. I really think that the Type L and the Soyuz 1973 are the two best electric guitar mics you can buy right now. Both are very different as well, so there's no telling which is "better". It really depends on the source. The TG L brings a lot more weight down low if that's what you're more interested in. It also seems a little more accurate in its presentation. The 1973 has a bit more of a midrange focus and deals with fuzzier tones better. It's almost like a dynamic mic with more up top and on bottom.
I can't imagine using anything else on amps for a long time. So far, everything has just sounded "right" without having to do any processing. The Coils help, but I briefly ran the Type L through my API preamps and there wasn't a massive, earth shaking difference.

Not sure how to post audio sample on here, I'll give it a try. I can't post anything we recorded today, so I plugged my Telecaster into the rig and recorded the dry/starter tone of the amps. The stereo sample is all the amps, victor projector amp on the left side, right side is Matchless amp with the Type L, Hooks amp line in down the middle a little, and the R88 room added in a bit. Other clip is just the Type L mic on the Matchless, everything is flat with no processing. The Coils add a nice bit of natural compression and transient control, the Type L in System B just sounds gorgeous and finished on its own... Attachments:Type L Matchless.mp3 (1.79 MB)

got to use the Type L today on vocals. It was a singer/songwriter deal. acoustic guitar and vocals. The Chandler went straight into an AML 5003D (1073-ish) and I used a couple AKG 414b-ULS on the guitar (into A-Designs P1's). The Chandler was on setting A and I was really impressed by how it sounded on (male) vocal. It was a quick low-budget session so we didn't try out a bunch of mics and I had no regrets. It really did a pretty good job of rejection too - not much guitar bleed. The 414's on the other hand, even though I had them pointing down and away from the vocals (in an effort to reduce bleed), had more bleed than I wanted (in cardioid mode - maybe shoulda used Fig8, but too late now...). I wish I had 2 more of the Type L! Also then did a harmonica overdub and used the Type L again. It was on A and sounded pretty good too, but I wish I had used B. I had to EQ a bit more than I wanted but it still worked in the mix.
btw, the mic is slightly smaller than I expected, and maybe lighter... but that also makes it easy to position on a regular boom tripod stand. I didn't see a silica gel pack in my box so I added one for storage. The mount (not a shockmount) worked well and threaded easily. I think someone asked about the capsule - looks like an edge terminated CK-12 style (which was not what I expected). transformer output... all good stuff. glad I bought it.

Had a quick futz with it today - what stuck out was the mid range; as has already been said the immediacy of it without harshness. Setting B has a lifted top end relative to A whereas A is a little fatter overall which I preferred on my voice. They are both versions of taste much like 2 different tasty salad dressings on a great salad. I'm a bit prone to hyperbole and this may change with more real world use but it feels like a mic you could make a whole record with so no buyer's remorse other than multi pattern would have been very cool particularly with all the competition at the moment. Doing narrations for video tomorrow and happily feeling it'll nail it. Cheers, Ross
