I’m talking clones (for my budget). I’ve got a few 251 and 47 clones, a pair of beesneez 67s and an oddball or two. But I’ve never played with an m49 clone. Am I missing something?

Curious too. From my experience with all the above, I usually think of the 49 as a more refined 47. Very similar but not quite as bold sounding. I guess I look at a 251 as the more refined 12 too. That was my take from having used them on different sessions.

The originals were a favorite of everyone at Sound Summit/ Musichead, lots of hard rock was recorded there.

While it’s more pop than rock Steve Perry also swears by the 49, has a couple that Klaus did is thing to.

It's been a long time, but when I used one on a quite powerful singer, it sounded great.

Probably not ideal for a screamo type of voice, but your standard raspy, airy, or power rock vocal, why not? Steve Perry used an M49 quite a bit. You can hear my take on a rock vocal in my FleA vs FleA video on my FleA 49C. My voice is rather big. 😉 It’s toward the end. See the time stamps.
Just give the vocalist some room. Don’t eat the mic.

Nick Cave uses the 49 for all his vocals.

Nick Cave uses the 49 for all his vocals. No one would ever accuse an M49 of being a bad seed

We also can’t forget Peter Gabriel. I've never heard any proximity effect boom in PG's vocals. Heard once he finds a great sounding spot in room and sings there, mic positioned to capture the way it sounds to him. Granted, it's only control room gossip but sometimes these things hold truth. Always a killer vocal sound from Mr. Gabriel!

Just don't get it... In your eyes! Chris Here Comes The Flood of Flotsom & Jetsom of PG references. Oh Chris it’s hard to Lead A Normal Life when You don’t Remember that you Loose Control, Through The Wire no less standing on Salisbury Hill. Face it my Friend, I have the touch, I mean if we would have stayed in TX my kid would have gone to San Jacinto elementary, it would have made for great Family Snapshot, being the huge PG fan I would have sent it to you Through The Wire. ( true story) Face it my friend I’m Amazing, I definitely Have The Touch at this D.I.Y even as I Go Swimming. Though I Don’t Remember if The Barry Williams Show is still On The Air even if it had a very high Single To Noise. That was all a Tchad Blake Darkside mix😁

Chris You have to understand when I was in rehab and we were looking for a simple name that most of the press (many were clients and some friends) I was listed at the info desk and the name on my room was Peter Gabriel. Those that knew me got it. I was trying to Get word through a couple of mutual acquaintances to tell him and see if he would use my name on hotel rooms😁

M49 is my favorite of the big gun Neumanns. It sounds good on everything... Drum rooms, mono drum overhead, acoustic and yes, rock vocals. I think it's superior to a U47 in terms of getting the vocal to sit with dirty guitars. That said, if the singer doesn't have good mic technique you still will probably have better luck with an SM7.
