Kick - sm57 Snare - sm57 Toms - sm57 x 2 OH - sm57 x 2 HH - sm57 = sm57 x 7 This is nightmare fuel for me.

Kick - sm57 Snare - sm57 Toms - sm57 x 2 OH - sm57 x 2 HH - sm57 = sm57 x 7 This is nightmare fuel for me. My Old EV rep was telling me he did this with RE320's. RE320 on Kick, Snare, Overheads... Granted, he was trying to hype up the (at the time) new/cool microphone.
Not as bad but not much better.

<sigh> I wanted to be the killjoy this time Kick out Neumann U47fet Snare KM84 Toms Lauten LS308 x 3 Hats Beyer M201 OHs U67 x2 Rooms V24s 8 mics. ~$37k I hate to be the math killjoy Ward , but that's 9 mics. PS - what's my "score" if I'm using 8 vintage 251's? I'd be more than willing to adjust my score up by using 8 Heiserman 251's..... Darn it, I'll have to kill the hi hat mic then.

Kick - sm57 Snare - sm57 Toms - sm57 x 2 OH - sm57 x 2 HH - sm57 = sm57 x 7 This is nightmare fuel for me. For most 'modern' mixing it would be fine . . . since everything is going to be replaced with samples anyhow, owing to the number of 'recordists' out there who don't know how to capture drums. But for our group of 10-12,000 people? It's like gravy on your ice cream.

Just listing what I'm currently using as it works well for me: OH = AT4050 x2 or MC930 x2 Snare = i5 + MC012 if needed Toms = ATM230 (much better than the MD421U mics I also have) Kick In = ATM25 or Beta52A if it's metal Kick Out = AT4047 Room = AEA R84A
Fairly inexpensive.

Yeah this really would depend on a lot of factors, but assuming I’m recording something for myself:
OH: R88 mk2 Kick: e602 Snare: m201 Heart: SR-2N Room L/R: 635a (x2) Toms 1/2: X1D (x2)

Kick - sm57 Snare - sm57 Toms - sm57 x 2 OH - sm57 x 2 HH - sm57 = sm57 x 7 Didnt Rick Rubin do this on a Chili Peppers record? Or is that just an urban myth? Cheers, Geoff

It’s fair to say that sm57s would not be my first choice for all the things!
More realistically, something like:
Kick out - Telefunken m82 Snare - Telefunken m80 Toms - ATM230 x2 OH - Austrian Audio OC18 x2 Room - Samar AL95 x2
Swap OH and Rooms depending on genre/vibe

Can we count the cost of when we got them and not what they are now?
Kick - D12 (old one that you hope doesn't lose it's bass response) Snare - KM84 OH - Vanguard V44s Floor tom - ATM25

Side question: How many of you all are recording/mixing drums in mono?

Side question: How many of you all are recording/mixing drums in mono? I never strive for a mono thing out of being old school or whatever, but have found myself with a mono OH with spot mics on the drums now and again. Toms get panned like 15% to each side and the Blum pair of ribbons in front of the kit give the sides the idea of space.

Another title for the thread could of been .... Please list every microphone suitable for recording drums because in effect that's what you got Unless one actually left out?

Unless one actually left out? Haven't seen a flood of Shure 535, EV RE10 11 15 16 666 RE20 suggestions yet!

Side question: How many of you all are recording/mixing drums in mono? Less these days. But I rarely pan the OHs out more than 30%. So... Mono'ish? Same goes for toms.

I am excited to try it on floor tom!

Kick - sm57 Snare - sm57 Toms - sm57 x 2 OH - sm57 x 2 HH - sm57 = sm57 x 7 This is nightmare fuel for me. This is a LIVING nightmare! So many clubs so often I have walked into this nightmare. All you need to make it a cliche is 2 C1000’s and a D112, and to make it worse one of C1000’s has that little piece of plastic that changes the pattern jammed in, or 2 C3000’s upside down using the tiny second element that makes it Hypercardiod. Unfortunately yes I have lived these nightmares.
