I’m guessing I’m not the only person here who buys and sells things all the time - admittedly I buy far more than I sell. I am wondering how often others go without using something until you sell it?
And what makes you hang onto something you never and/or rarely use?

Well, urr.. I did kinda keep onto a 6176 because it looks really cool. Then, when fiscals came into the equation it was the first to go.
I have tried over the last year or so with Reverb & Ebay the way it is to sell as little as possible, recently I've generally gone for the best I can find. Although about a decade ago stuff was constantly flowing through my studio, even had a DBX 676 and I must have been about the only person on the planet that owned one.

My thoughts were always never sell your business tools. So I never sell anything. That's why I have so much vintage gear. I should at some point cash in.

I have so many different types of recordings I do, things have to sit unused for years before I'm sure they're truly out of circulation. Many things have sat a year or two, been on the 'maybe sell' list, then are indispensable on the next job. Be different if I were just recording myself.

I think at this stage Bill you might as well cut out the middle man and own your own manufacturing plant. Equip4Bill (nobody else can have this amazing equipment inc.) has a nice ring to it.

If and when you feel overwhelmed or you need money or rackspace. The latter being my problem.

If and when you feel overwhelmed or you need money or rackspace. The latter being my problem. The latter is my problem too Paul. Racks are numerous, and 100% full. Buying a piece of rack gear these days means some beloved piece must go. And yet........................

That of course brings up Mr Murphy’s law of cleaning house: sell it and 2 days latter you will have a need for it.

i established a new rule for myself: i shall only buy new gear if i first earn the money with MY OWN MUSIC. sooo … i am safe - no new gear for me for a while! :-)
because honestly i have all i need to record and mix and produce. i can‘t blame the tools.

Since I wear multiple musical hats I kinda rotate gear around whatever I’m doing the most of at the moment. Sometimes it’s studio stuff, so I’ll sell guitar or trumpet gear. Sometimes it’s trumpet focused, so I’ll sell some studio gear. It’s a vicious cycle lol.

If I haven't used it for 5 years .... it goes.
To make space for something I will use.
Simple formula really.

I hang onto things until I decide I need something better. Sometimes that takes years.
Things I never sell are instruments. Guitars mostly. I sold off practically all my hardware synthesizers years or decades ago when software synths and sample libraries got SO good. I don't usually sell microphones either although I did trade my vintage Neumann U89 for an API Lunchbox loaded with great gear a couple years ago. I have other mikes that will do what it did, and just as well. I never used it and it was too valuable not to liquidate and use that money for other gear. As it turns out I did very well on the trade. Other than that, I have every working microphone I ever bought. I've thrown away the odd SM57 that stopped working over the years. It's just as cheap to buy another one as it is to replace the transducers. I always keep the transformers out of them though. You never know when they might come in handy.

No use for 2 years??
It's moving out. The reason is that it clearly is not essential.
Also I decided to never run a museum.

I put all my guitars and mandolins under my grand piano. That way everything gets humidified together. When the guitars and mandolins no longer fit under the grand piano, I start thinking if there is one I can sell. This is very scientific by the way.

It was easier to sell before getting taxed on it. Paid taxes to buy it, owe taxes to sell it.

And before someone pipes up that it’s nothing new, that I’ve supposed to have self-reported all along, yeah, yeah, yeah. Ah, the good old days where I actually had a choice.

I bought a 676 last year it was pregnant in the studio about 6 months before it gone. I liked it a actually, but it was a bit of a let down because you couldn't remove the preamp from the compressor. It made the nice compressor useless for other pres.

Occasionally heard at my friend’s studio: “I forgot to water the piano!”

...when to thin the herd? When you get to the point you post on a forum asking when to thin the herd.
Half joking aside, I personally like to carry as little weight as possible. If I don't use something for a while, I'll sell it. Especially things that are large and take more storage space.
I used to have way more gear than I do now and I'm happier having only what I need.

I still don't understand this 'sell' word y'all are using.
Sounds mean, painful and very alien to me.
