No use for 2 years?? It's moving out. The reason is that it clearly is not essential. Also I decided to never run a museum. Coincidentally I just went to the La Brea Tar Pits Museum last weekend. The guide said the Saber Tooth Tiger was 300,005 years old. I asked how the carbon dating could be so precise. He said "Well when I started here 5 years ago"... "They told me the skeleton was 300,000 years old". (Hit me drummer) * Chris *They also discovered a an Alesis Blackface ADAT in the Tar Pits. The tape was still stuck in it halfway.

i established a new rule for myself: i shall only buy new gear if i first earn the money with MY OWN MUSIC. sooo … i am safe - no new gear for me for a while! :-) because honestly i have all i need to record and mix and produce. i can‘t blame the tools. Whereas Lenny Kravitz only buys used. Also...(best Bones McCoy/Star Trek voice) "Dammit Jim" "I'm an engineer" "Not a Studio Tour Guide!" (Spock) "But Doctor (Bill?) you do have a vast collection of ancient 20th and 21st Century transducers" (That means microphones Eric) "Including the priceless Shure SM7". "Spock are you out of your VULCAN MIND!!" Chris

so I'm not really fishing for anything. I'm just curious what other folks do. My only close gear head friend sells anything he doesn't use in 2-3 months, which seems kinda wild to me.
I have way, way more gear than I need. I probably have enough mics to set up for 3 full live bands tracking though barely have the room for a 5 piece in my live room. There are some valuable things that I literally haven't used in at least a year - a pair of 414B ULSs in mint condition and a Lawson 251 are the real big ticket pieces that are just sitting around. I have an awful lot of credit card debt and I could easily eliminate at least half of it selling stuff I don't really use, if I sell those pieces as well. Without them, I'll maybe get rid of 1/3 of the debt.
only hesitant to sell the 414s as they are no longer made and I feel like I might want them around again at some point. The Lawson I got a killer deal on and I do still bust it out on occasion, but probably not often enough to keep it. I have a pair of Shannon Rhoades 251s that I much prefer to the Lawson, anyway. Hell, I have a hard enough time parting with drum sets (have to sell at least 2 of my 7) and those take up a lot more room than a few mics.

Really good on banjo as well. Anything that is irritating, basically.

"anything irritating" hahahaha. i literally think tambourine is the most irritating instrument. i did live sound at a radio station for years and anytime there was one in the room, it was in every mic, no matter what i think if i had the XLS, i would be quicker to sell since they're still made. the ULS are darker, I always thought, though have never compared

This only applies to mics, as the rack gear is pretty final by now. If I have mics that don't get used after a few years, I tend to sell them. If I've not used a mic on a session in 3-4 years, I'm probably not going to use it. So far that metric has served me well, except for the Shure KSM-141 pair. I've bought a pair three times. Ooopsie. Lesson learned, and will not be selling the current pair.
That said, I have a Gefell M-930 I bought new (still looks new) that used to see regular use. But I've not used it in at least 5 years. Could probably sell it and never miss it, but it's such a special mic that I hate to see it go. So I guess that's the one exception right now.
Of the mics I've sold, I don't miss any of them, so the system is working.

Without them, I'll maybe get rid of 1/3 of the debt… Absolutely get rid of that credit card debt! Unless you have zero percent interest you’re just giving money away. I’m in a sell stuff to buy stuff mode at the moment. Things that I haven’t used in a year and are not in risk of needing for a recall are on the chopping block. It helps me justify the new things and avoids going into debt. I don’t have anything that’s really vintage so hanging on to it for another decade probably won’t change its value much anyway. So might as well cash in now.

We’re not talking vintage Neves & Neumanns here. You’ll be so much farther ahead and breathe easier w/o the anchor of credit card debt and crazy interest rates around your neck.

so I'm not really fishing for anything. I'm just curious what other folks do. My only close gear head friend sells anything he doesn't use in 2-3 months, which seems kinda wild to me. I've sold stuff two days later if I don't like it or don't think I'm gonna use it, I just think of it as stuff that could be replaced with better stuff which is taking up rack space. The most equipment I've ever had is about 40 pieces, an SSL console and about 30(ish) mic's (mainly Neumann, Gefell, Sony, Tele, Schoeps, Manley, Shure & AT) but that's because I ran a studio and you never know who is going to walk through the door. At the beginning of last year I had about 24 pieces of HW & about 10 mic's, now I have half of that.
Honestly I don't miss any of them, I no longer have any Neumann's (besides U67's of course) nor Gefell's. I like modern SSL (and most recent consoles to be fair) over classics, I love the balanced inserts and inputs, the small form factors that don't mess with acoustic's and also in terms of quality there's no inherent crap in the signal like crunchy VCA's of yesteryear and generally the bandwidth on new desks is incredible, fortunately some desks still have bags of character too. When I went home studio I bought desks galore, mainly cheap or mid range but unfortunately a lot of them didn't add much over an interface. Cool for routing but again they didn't add much to the party, that being said some LFAC's didn't either.
I'll never be without some sort of characterful desk, it'll either be SSL or Neve for me. From cheap to expensive they have a sound that's hard to mimic, the Big Six for e.g. IMO sounds a lot like the AWS (despite its limitations). That being said I wouldn't mind an Origin or Genesys black. As for the rest, well I just found what's pleasent to my ears that reflects in a recording.. Some are too big sounding like the ISK 2B MK2 but for instruments or voices you want to smoothly stand out it's a fantastic mic. I can get the WA-8000 to sound so crystal clear it's uncanny and I don't really (ever) go for Warm (anything) so that's a cool surprise, just to note here I've have had a lot of contact with C800's so I'm not without reference. Also I bought a Tele 251 which in some ways the ISK really does punch harder even if the Tele sits better holistically. Although you can't escape expense all the time, I never did quite find a U67 or M269C that could match or beat the originals so I had to buy them.
Ultimately, through years of doing this I understand what I need and I know what's unnecessary.. If anything falls into the latter camp it's gone and anything else in my situation is just hoarding.
