That being said, the collector in me still wants a U67...but I've used this CV4 on two records I'm finishing up and everyone lives the vocal sounds.

That being said, the collector in me still wants a U67... This is the reason why I sought out real ones instead of building. Currently, I collect the gear more than I use it. I plan on that changing once we move south. If it doesn't, I expect you to slap me silly Johnkenn

The prices will only go up so my logic is why not own a few. I can always flip a vintage mic in a hurry if need be. Trouble is, they sound so damn good, you start to get trapped

A u67 is always u67 it set the standard, as all the classics. The DIY and new mic market Is still new to me I enjoy making others that can't afford them, and have talent to play with the big boys. I always ask a person what do they want the mic to sound like. Well over 60% always say a mix of 2 classics or kinda like this and some of that. Which start a whole new thing now that it's possible

My mic was very nice before sinsay did his work. Before he did his work we did compare my stock mic to Jeff's best vintage u67. My mic was a little harder in the upper mids and a little less lowend. Very much in the same vein and a fantastic mic. After the comparison I felt really really good about it. But the dork in me wanted to see if Sinsay could push the mic closer to Jeff's vintage unit.
Randy called me before Sinsay did his work and told me how great the mic was and that Sinsay had his work cut out for him to make it better. After the Sinsay's work, Randy called and said I would be very happy to hear the new capsule! That got me super excited to hear it. Randy has great ears.
The samples I heard blew me away. Even on laptop speakers I could hear the difference clearly in favor of Sinsay's work. From what I heard it was amazing. Sinsay's may even try another tweak on the capsule once he gets some time. I am 100% confident in his work. I can say that about only a handful of guys.
HOW DO I TAG SINSAY??? @sinsay

Are we talking about a DU67? If so, what body, capsule, and tranny are in it?

AMI BV12 or AMI T67? Also who made the capsule before sinsay modded/reskinned it? That's kinda of the funny thing, truth be told I made a frankencapsule. Honestly had a bunch of parts that I had in my junk drawer and barely had enough to do it. In fact it don't even have all the screws in it and etc... So it is a ghetto build, but was able to make a point. I'm pretty sure that the backplates matched if that helps I know it was not Nuemann or name brand, it was a Chinese for sure but not a Miktek either yes it would help and make a difference to start with a better backplate in this case

Thanks for the info. I guess what I was getting at was what capsule was in it when it still sounded great, but slightly "harder in the mids" than the vintage U67?

T67 and it is a full Sinsay capsule. The original capsule was a BeesNeez. I have had a lot of luck with their capsules.

Hey boys,
It's Eric Heiserman I was mentioned awhile back in this thread.. Good to see some healthy capsule conversations!! And just to confirm a few things, I am currently making my own brass ck12 variant that is sounding pretty good so far.. It is based on an original deep dish style and is constructed as closely as I can get it! And as you all know very well, the sound of a good c12 is a bit allusive so my capsule is modeled after what some trusted folks consider a great sounding c12.. To be a bit more on topic, I have had the pleasure or dis pleasure of re skinning a large number of Chinese capsules. Some are pretty good in terms of backplates but most really suck on the Mylar front.. I use a type of film that is very different from the Chinese stuff and although I can't prove it I assume it contributes to the way they sound. I also think tuning is a big factor as well. Every Chinese capsule I have re skinned has greatly improved the sound. And Shannon, really looking forward to meeting you at NAMM. I will bring some toys for us to play with..
Eric

First, congrats to Shannon on the website upgrade: micrehab.com/...I am currently awaiting the re-arrival of my 251 clone with one of Eric's tweaked HK-12 capsules...Eric tuned this one to accommodate my specific tonal request (not quite classic voicing)...

@shan & Eric, are either of you guys doing a ground up M7 cap?
How do you guys feel about the potential of re-skinning the Chinese K47 capsules? Any chance of getting a lower cost option for the MK47 projects that sounds even remotely like an original? Obviously the blueline Thiersch is the favorite for this project, but that doesn't necessarily mean we can't get the same vibe for less. I'd be much more comfortable throwing a smaller MK47 with a re-skinned Chi cap in front of a windy kick than a 2K+ mic, especially in a live enviro (eek).
