Thanks John, to introduce myself, I am studio owner north of Quebec Canada and I love good sounding gear (did I hear analog). I saw this post in the DIY community where I hang a lot building DIY kits like mic,s and stuff. :-)

tonycamphd, Jim did give it as an option. I definitely like the price better. I wonder about handling, jacket stiffness and all that. This is the problem with product that can only be bought in bulk... no way to test it out. jimwilliams , any difference between the two cables?

The thing that gives me some assurance, is they go out of their way to make the direct comparison, maybe a quick email asking for a 4" sample to evaluate? Before committing to 500-1000 feet?

They give an OEM their specs and the cable is made for them to their specifications. I'd bet the General Cable version is the same, just unbranded.

I requested a sample of the General Cable. Now on to Belden.

Belden actually makes the vast majority of other brands.

mulmany any response on the sample requests? Both samples are on there way. Hopefully have a comparison by the end of this week. My only concern is flexibility for mic cable use. The only spec that I found different was in the conductor insulation so we will see if that has any effect.

It's stiff and doesn't lay flat on the floor. You may trip over it if not careful.
No one ever said good audio was easy.

It would be good in the walls? I'm still doing wiring and haven't closed the walls yet in the new room. At 66 cents a foot, I am considering pulling the mogami multipair and getting a 1000 ft of the alternative wire. Would this be a worthwhile investment over the mogami?

About 3/8 inch per cable. I received the General version yesterday... it was pretty flexible when it arrived but that was due to the 96 degree heat. Today it was room temp and pretty stiff, kinda like RG6 quadshield coax or the cheap hdmi from monoprice. I plan on using it for acoustic instruments and classical work.

The Belden is a CL2 cable so meets most codes for use in walls, that would be why it's so stiff like most CL2 cables.

I received the belden sample. First impression is that the belden is a nicer cable, just from the feel of it.
Got both samples out and compared flexibility side by side... Belden wins. Belden wins the ratings game as well, CL2X. The General Cable (Carol) has no ratings.
Are these differences enough to pay almost 3 x the amount for the Belden? I would say yes. The increase flexibility for mic use will be helpful and the actual CL2X rating keeps you code compliant for in wall use.

They also make a plenum version designed for in wall use. 89182 is the number IIRC. It's thinner, much more stiff and slippy to pull through walls.

Ok. We have 30 feet left on a 500 ft spool of the Belden. At this point I will just order the spool.
People who have said yes I will PM and give payment info.

Hi Patrick, are you going to order the 500 or 1000' spool? I'm thinking i'm eventually going to want more of this for some more distant interconnects.

It's too expensive to have lying around.

I'll take the last 50 feet if it's still available, or more if someone backs out. Let me know.
