Going to be placing the order on Monday for 500ft. Is there five more people that need a 100ft each? If there is I can order the 1000ft spool, unfortunately the only cost saving will be in shipping the full spool.
PM me if interested.
Cable Data So XLRM+20ft+XLRF= $34 plus labor and shipping If you want to order soldered combinations write it out like I did above.
If you would like it as parts just give me totals for each part required. PM with wire information and contact info and I will contact you when the footage requirement are met. This is also a special order product from my supplier so not sure about lead times. The quicker we get the 500ft spoken for the faster I can get it to you. Edit The patch bay wiring threads got me thinking about doing a group buy on a spool of the Belden wire that jimwilliams recommended. Unfortunately this wire is not available by the foot, only in 500ft or 1000ft spools. As you can imagine it is a little cost prohibitive for just a couple of mic cables. I have a line on either spool size at a significant price savings over retail. I am willing to purchase, cut to length, and ship if there is enough interest and payments.

Mulmany, thanx for doing this! depending on price, I'm in for 135' or more, i'm thinking 8 lengths(i'm a drummer 8), 5@ 15' for my tube mics(psu xlr out), and 3 at 20', but i'm in for as much as I can afford....
for anyone who may be sceptical on this, IM(pretty substantial)E with J Williams, if he says it's happening, it's happening, i have NOT tried this cable, but i totally trust JW and I take him at his word.
in the very near future, i'm going to put up an a/b sample of a modded strip vs an unmodded strip from my Soundcraft delta 200, the diff is about as subtle as an anvil landing on your head wyle E coyote style, and i apologize up front for blowing your mind 8)

Cable Data This is the link to the cable that we are looking at. I can also provide ends at a bit less then retail. The only catch is going to be shipping, but you can't buy this any other way so your kinda stuck if you want to use it. The cable is made for an industrial network control protocol and is not a Cat cable, just an FYI. I am looking at $1.45 per foot plus shipping. Normal cost is $1.67 per foot and must be purchased in 500 or 1000 foot spools (not very practical for most of us). Post and let me know. Patrick

Great initiative thx !
what brand of ends would you be using and can you sate actual prices ?
I am in canada so ultimately would need a shipping quote too
From patchbay to HW is there a rule of thumb like keep everything the same length (in my case 3-4 feet) to not introduce any time differences ?

Believe me I have always strived for sonic perfection. My studio has been completely wired with Mogami and monster prolink cable for many years. If I use the belden 9182 cable for mic cords with XLR ends, into an XLR wall panel, thru 60' of Mogami multipair into the console, then thru 50' of monster prolink, to and from the recorder, Am I really going to hear a difference with the belden mic cables? Probably Not. If I could if I rewired the whole studio with the Belden, maybe so. Now when using the belden, going in and out of an outboard pre, straight to the console pachbay, Maybe,I would like to hear the difference, but if the XLR ends, pachbay connectors, and console wiring, aren't the same impedence, wouldn't those wouldn't they be a blocker, let alone the my monitoring wiring. Where does it all end for sonic perfection, with the way they record and listen to the crap they're putting out today, would it really be worth the money spent?

With all due respect and quite honestly, your comment should have stopped at "I never tried it", this is a group buy thread, if u want to TRY it? great, if not, long winded speculative posts going against the recommendation of an audio electronics master, is probably a bad Idea, don't u think? U could always start another thread.

I am interested in a few lengths, and ends on them for sure.
Might be helpful if you posted a price, sans shipping, of fitted XLRs at 12ft 25ft lengths or something along those lines.
great idea.
cheers

Ends depend on your poison, switchcraft, neutrik, or amphenol? I have been using the nickel with silver contact Neutrik's. Maybe Jim can comment?

I don't think it will make a big difference if you can't change your wire runs to your pres. I think in your case, I would run my primary vocal to a pre in the room then through the structure wiring at line level. That would give the most benefit to the most critical amplification of the chain. You could always try a short run and see.

When Paramount Pictures bought one of my mic preamps for their foley building back in 1994, I brought down a few runs of 9182 fitted with Neutrik connectors. Some were 100' long. They ran them from the foley pit up the stairs into the control room. They already were using modified Neumann KMR-81 shotgun mics in the pit.
A couple of days later they called back. Yes, they loved the sound of the cable. It didn't reveal if patched into their in-wall tie lines, only when run up the stairs. The AE's all got together and petitioned mangagement to allow for a full rewiring of the building with 9182. They had just spent thousands fixing up the brick building after the 1994 quake so management wasn't keen on the idea.
The AE's balked and said they were not happy campers. The walls were jack-hammered back open and the entire building is wired with 9182. The first film it was used on was that Star Trek movie when the Enterprise crashed on that jungle planet (can't remember the title). It's worth a listen as it's very revealing and an intimate sound. The crashing through the jungle forest was all done analog, no synths. They overdubed dozens of tracks breaking tree branches in the foley pit. A little pitch shifting and you get a natural sounding crash.
If you use that cable to make a mic cable, use Neutrik connectors and pound out the plastic insert so the cable diameter clears.

So prices
Here is what I will do if people need it to get enough feet together to make purchasing a spool feasible for me. I will cut and terminate with silver contact Neutrik ends. I can use silver solder as well. I need to come up with a labor price for termination, I know some guys just don't solder.
If you want to order soldered combinations write it out like I did above.[/b]
If you would like it as parts just give me totals for each part required.
This is also a special order product from my supplier so not sure about lead times. The quicker we get the 500ft spoken for the faster I can get it to you.

mulmany put the name of the cable in the title of the thread and list it's specs in the first post, i'm going to start a thread over at GDIY and get some fellas here for the group buy, that should get us 500' quickly, maybe 1000'? would that lower the price? I'm committed to 135', how much are you keeping Patrick? this way we can tally/ or count it down if you will... T

I think most people on here know that I'm not a cable snob. I believe in measurable quantifiers and that leaves no real room for brand names or "special" attributes to drive my decisions.
In other words, as long as your conductor's specs don't get in the way of the physics (cable gauge too small for the current, too much capacitance for the impedance affecting your high frequencies, etc) then cable is pretty much just cable. I don't believe you need gold and silver braided super cables or special insulators made from the tears of virgins. You just need good quality copper with solid quality connectors.
The rest is marketing and wishful thinking.

Well I'll be the judge of whether it works or not when I TRY IT. Jim Williams mods have always worked incredibly well(not subtle), so I believe my very hifi signal chain will reveal if there is a diff? im in need of some new mic cables regardless, and the price is great as DIY, so i know I can't go wrong either way. I believe mike Shipley heard a diff in mic cables to boot, so Jim's in good co.
i know I've said this before, and it seems to be ignored for some unknown reason, this game is the sum of all the small parts, one weak link in the chain, breaks the chain. I'm personally striving for 0 weak links.

I'm personally striving for 0 weak links. Not ignoring at all. I believe something similar. It's just that it's not black and white in the links of the chain. More chain analogy: if the links are strong enough, then it doesn't matter what they are made from, what size they are, what shape they are, they will work. Similar to cable. Once it's good enough, more is not necessarily better though. Once you get to "good enough" then it's just coloration and other things that are more of opinion than necessity. Honda vs. Ferrari and all those old-timey analogies.

I read u, and don't disagree, some things like the $2k power cord between the wall and device are pushed, and other than a ferrite collar, I see it as snake oil unless it plugged into an isolated balance power transformer/supply, the wiring behind he wall is shit, its like plugging a firehouse into a hose bib at ur house, it's effect may be marginally better than a high quality copper supply line in the perfect scenari, but for $2k it's laughable. As far as signal interconnecting, it's diff imv, first the cost is comparable to a standard mic cable, but the top is supposed to open up a bit with the hi end stuff, Jim has said all things being equal, the delta 200 wired with the silver ribbon opens up a bit more as well to his ears, I'm going to find out if this is true for me as well, if not, it'll be the first time Jim would be off with my findings.
