Not trying to be a smart arse Tim but I attempted to contact you at least a couple of times on your business email and also through this site after you advised I do that with my NT 2000 however I received no follow up reply - I guess you had a head full of busy but I'd love to get one of your caps if you've got one spare I don't really trust any other CK12s to make it worth my while (not that I truly know). Cheers, Ross Ross I am so sorry. I haven't been able to provide capsules to private customers the last 2 years because of so much OEM work. I regret that I don't have excess production for DIY guys in that those are my favorite customers. I can hook you up Ross if you are brave enough lol.

JMHO, but the Lewitt is good vis-a-vis the GREAT Austrian Audio OC818 which is twice the price! A bargain at twice the price!

The Austrian Audio without doubt. There is a good YouTube Vid with Master Claas or whatever his name is which is thorough.

I've used various 414s numerous times for session vocal work in other studios, but I don't own one. I'm honestly not sure how close to a 414 they would be, but I would take a look at the ADK Cremona 251 T-FET or ADK Vienna 12 T-FET. My guess is they are both more like super 414s with the Vienna skewing toward a brighter 414 and the Cremona the more neutral 414.

Lewitt LCT 640 sounds a lot like a 414 with a better low end. Something like $650 if memory serves. Which 414 does the Lewitt sound like? Are we talking original EB here?

Have owned a pair of circa 2000 414-XLII for years. They're never bad on anything, but they're never perfect on anything. I'm a big fan of the B-ULS, but the current prices are crazytown. Sold the XLII pair; they were too bright on top for me. Great mics, tho.

I really haven't tried that many to know which version I like most. I have used the original one, and for acoustic guitar, and it was great. Whatever model would have been new-ish around 2005 sounded better on one particular track of mine, even though I used a U87 on the rest of the album. The 414 has a particular sound, and the Lewitt is simply quite reminiscent of that.

IMHO the Austrian Audio's are slightly bright, but still smooth. My U195 in FLAT setting is similar. I sound better on the Neutral to Dark toned microphones. So am biased in that direction. Including FAT setting on U195. Chris

Well damn, now my mind is racing guys, thanks a lot! I do have an extra CT12 sitting around that I have absolutely no plans for and all my others are in tube mic designs. Should I put it in a new C414, an NT2a as Tim suggests, or something else?

Putting the AA’s 818’s on the shelf for now. Heard they are very smooth and flat. EQ’s very good?

The 818s take EQ well, no complaints! They are my main drum overheads for live work, and I’ll often just put them up with a high pass plus a notch out of the low mids. They are definitely brighter than my Bu87, but I think it’s a “polished sheen” more than harshness or sizzle.

I have a pair of the XLS versions. It was all I could afford of a “real” mic when I got them, and honestly I think they get a bit of a bad rap.
Great utility mics imo, sound better than most of the mics with the usual suspect caps in them. I think many forget how useful that polar pattern switch can be. A 414 in figure 8 on a bass drum can be really quite nice! I’ve used them for many vocal recordings and never had any complaints. Work well as OH if you don’t have anything else to use.

This is a good example. Shame there's no singing but you get the idea. That's a very informative review. Thanks. I think his 414 sounds muffled/congested. The 818 sounds more open, but still smooth. I like it! I like (and own) the Lewitt 540 subzero -- one person's "bright" is another person's "clear"

It's not the eziest to be a brite singer. Thair are very phew of us. Anyway... I've tested the Lewitt 400/500 Series, along with the 640. And the tube and tube/FET combo's also. (Not the newest Tube mic though) The 840 and 940 (Fully set on Tube) FWIW were the best on me. I did think the XLS was a little "veiled", in comparison to the Lewitt FET's and AA 18's. So a bit source dependant. (Kinda like the stock MKI/MKII 3U capsules) Chris P.S. I look forward to the vocal shoot out.

Looks like fun. Eventually I may want to pop in an upgraded capsule... In my AKG 200 Perception. * Partly to learn basic soldering/capsule replacement/etc. Chris *Talk about bright. Stock capsule-Sheesh!

I've had a C414B-TL II and a pair of B-ULS since '99. Can't imagine being without them. The B-ULS get used for all manner of things. Solid, workhorse mics.

I'm spoiled. I have an AKG C12A Me too, I have 500 BC12A and another 500BC12A fets! I actually never gave too much time to the sonics of these mics until recently. It’s like a new lease on sonic bliss for me. They can be so sweet sounding and not in your face.
