I’d love blackmagic since it would likely result in PT ultimate Native being free or at least cheaper than Logic. A breakup makes sense if it’s so Apple can swoop in. They are pushing spatial, atmos, VR, which means: potentially more and more channels of hardware. Video and Audio. The virtual atmos surround they do has room to improve, maybe future versions will eventually use 16 drivers per ear? And developers needing to make stuff for it would need 32 outputs for 32 drivers, processing on each. Add that Avid is the price premium leader like Apple, seems quite the fit. Then your Apple system is complete: use it for mixing Apps, earbuds, in ears and FOH live sound, Film, post, AV installs, everywhere Yeah, maybe I'm just trying to manifest it somehow. Same thought on Blackmagic. DaVinci free version is pretty amazing. And compared to, what... iMovie? It's a joke of a comparison.

After Apple started to take over the lowend and middle of the video post market AVID made a deliberate pivot towards Windows. HP & Dell became very key development partners in providing Turnkey and Support. Apple also has never understood the role of dedicated DSP and low latency nor have they shown interest in the interface market, preferring to leave that to others. AVID on the highend is all about the integration. Yes in theory Apple could buy marketshare, but if they did would it be worth the investment? Would an AVID approach piss off their existing customers? Would an Apple approach piss off the AVID customer base? What would Apple do with the large hybrid console/ controllers and live consoles ( both embedded windows systems)? To understand the role of These go read the Article in the TapeOp archives on Austin City Limits. This is the problem with AVID and just about anyone buying AVID, there are probably less than 500 people in the world who understand everything AVID & how it all fits together and most of those are at more of a support level vs C suite. Even on a dealer level the way it is currently set up very few dealers understand all of AVID.

I worry a bit about Sibelius. It's been my notation program for 25 years, and sometimes feels like it's lagging behind a lot of Avid development. That is the one I can see being abandoned, while it has a loyal group of users, it hasn’t seen the investment or development. I also see it as the least understood product. So unless I was prepared to live with an Orphaned system on an orphaned OS, ( hey I spent my morning on a thinkpad 600 running Soundweb). Time to start quietly looking elsewhere. You're probably right about that. I don't know how their market share in educational compares to that of Finale, but I'd gather that's a big chunk of their market. I've got a subscription now (quite reasonably priced) but I'll convert to permanent if need be. I'll give it some time to see what shakes, but I'll keep my eyes open for Dorico cross grades ;-)
