I tend not to compress my stereo OH which are typically a spaced pair. I don't compress going in, and I've been staying away from compressing in the mix. Even with good cymbal choices and an attention to dynamics, I find that any compression on those stereo OH tend to accentuate the cymbals more than I'd like, and there's more sizzle and not as much cut. I've been doing mainly pop and rock stuff lately.
Now, I have been running a Mono OH in combination with the stereo pair, and that mic will usually get around 2-3dB of compression going in, usually from a Distressor or a BAE 10DCF. That mic is usually less cymbal-y, so I get a little more frisky. I will compress that mono OH in the mix, sometimes a lot.

Vulf Compressor itb tbh. Huge sound. Tilt sidechain filter. Cool thing. Nice tip, I bought that to open a client's mix session and forgot I had it. Just tried it again and it's awesome. Their Tupe is one of my favorite sound shaping tools ever too.

[…] As far as mic placement, I either do the Bill Schnee / semi-Glynn Johns thing […] I'm familiar with Glyn Johns, but may I ask what the Bill Schnee semi-G.J. is?

When I use a minimal mic setup on drums, It's usually using a Royer SF-12 as a overhead to capture the entire kit.
Because of its position relative to the rest of the drums, I like to squeeze it a bit to help even out all the sounds, & bring up the rest of the kit. Most of my drum sound is created from this stereo mic. Compression, just seems to bring it all together nicely.
My favorite comps in this spot, in no particular order.
1 - Distressors 2- Fatso 3- ShadowHills Mastering 4- Neve 33609 5- Daking 91579 (release #4)
