I've been asking the same question. What if I spent that $7-9k on digital marketing and content creation? I could likely get far more eyeballs than if I went to NAMM again. I’m keen to see what kind of extraspicy 🌶️ memes you could produce for 9k 🤣 With a global audience, it does feel like content creation is where it’s at. If I’m looking for gear, I’ll check opinions on this forum (thanks everyone!), and hit YouTube. Our very own seawell makes amazing and very honest gear reviews, and you can usually get raw multitracks of mic tests from Podcastage, SpectreSoundStudios, Produce Like A Pro, AudioHaze, Kohle Audio Kult, etc. I’d bet that doing a review+giveaway with a popular audio gear channel would net more leads for a boutique manufacturer than a booth would. By the way, did Produce Like a Pro ever stop by the booth? They were asking for recommendations of which exhibitors to check out on Instagram, and I suggested Vanguard & Beesneez 💪

Unfortunately that just isn't going to happen. Namm's of yore are just over and I say this as someone who has exhibited at 22 namms, 9 aes shows and 6 musikmesses, including last weeks Namm. The reality of the music business has changed over the last decade and a half and the concept of what namm is and why it exists meshes with that reality less and less each year. this isn't due to any one single reason but actually a few different things that were all happening at the same time. [...] This, in some form, is becoming true in other industries as well. For those that have worked in the video game industry, E3 was just cancelled this year. I don't necessarily think NAMM is going to that extreme (at least, yet?), but as Eric notes, it's definitely a concern when some of the big names no-show.
I know this forum isn't really the target audience, per se, but I really wonder how the NAB Show is doing right now... Haven't gone in years, but I'd be curious how that show's been doing the past few.

NAB is way to much of niche these days and has the distinct advantage that every 2 years Broadcasters see the influx of campaign ad spending ( and damn if I don’t miss every penny). The counter to this is Clear Channel did to independent broadcasters what GC did to mom and pop music stores. But all that Campaign money is fun to spend ( yeah it’s at the lowest rate but who says you can’t increase your rates in Dec of the odd years? It’s easy $ no need to wine and dine and here is the biggie they pay on time and if they don’t they are in violation of Federal election law! Yes I learned more about Federal Election law selling audio and video gear than school or the news.)

I’m a fan of the Pinot Noir finish, and it’s not just because I live somewhere that makes good Pinot Noir 🤣🍷. Vocalists get excited when they see the v13 on the stand, I get a lot of comments about it. When you take it away... Do they finally calm down? Chris

My channel is only around 2k subscribers and I've made A LOT of money for quite a few manufacturers. If I were a small manufacturer, I'd strongly consider it instead of the NAMM cost mostly based on the fact that it's so hard to properly hear anything in that environment. A well done YouTube review can continue to drive sales for years to come. It would be interesting to see if a manufacturer that normally goes to NAMM, went the YouTube/Social Media Marketing route instead one year and compared numbers. I'd be happy to help with anyone interested in giving it a try.

What did the Werewolf say on his YouTube review of the Silver Bullet? (Other than it's killer)
"Don't forget to Lycan subscribe". Chris P.S. Sorry. The mere mention of "Booth Babes" got me hungry like the wolf.

SNIP The only reason I really like NAMM is that I get to see friends and acquaintances I normally otherwise would not see. Other than that, it's expensive, time-consuming, and exhausting. Awww... it's always nice to see you too! Although I've missed the last couple of shows. But . . . had it not been for previous shows, I can think of at least two V44S mics that wouldn't be doing 'yeomans service' in the field now. DAYUMMM.... that is one fine-ass microphone!

What Fender and others realized is the guy you’re sending to NAMM isn’t the guy actually selling our merchandise. Dirty secret everybody has known for years. What COVID did was during a market boom no less make these big manufacturers reinvent how they felt with their dealers. They then realized these new tools were not just reaching the guy who decides what to buy but also the guy who is actually going to push Fender. Much better return on investment. The funny thing though is, we all knew who was paying for trips and such for the owners, we all appreciated them for getting mom and dad out of the house, the trick was channeling that into moving gear.

A good friend of mine just got back from NAB yesterday. He said it was actually a really good show, though granted he hasn't been prior to this year, so nothing to compare it directly to. He's a YouTuber (a very cool and understated one), and he said even though YouTubers made up like 0.1% of the attendees, the manufactures were all quite keen to connect with the YouTubers -- after all, they're the ones who are essentially making free advertisements for these companies. Everybody in the stills photography world is sick of the video guys, but video is kind of the only growing market right now, so that's what manufacturers are making, and that's where the technological advances are happening the most right now.

While YouTubeers are the growth they represent something much more important to manufacturers and dealers, profit margin! Traditional broadcast has always been a very specialized and when it comes to the large ticket items a market that was direct from manufacturers and very limited margin. You have to understand when the guys who were selling photo gear on 47th street got into video they drove the margin on say a Betacam down to 6-7 percent. It made video a very high touch, high dollar sale for very little money. These dealers made most of their money on year end manufacturers rebates. Their were a bunch of audio dealers who were receiving kickbacks for walking the video portion of major deals to other videos, the problem was these dealers didn’t see the light, these video dealers were going to eventually dive into audio big time and keep the high margin audio part for themselves. Many of the sales guys who made major dollar’s behind the scenes on these kick backs became consultants and used car salesman.
