[/quote]So they lean more API than Neve, etc or are they more in the clean camp? Know and love API but never really use them on the 2buss.

Well with the output control they can really grow some serious balls. So capable of more of that than say my trusty old 550s. Kinda they’re own thing What I’m trying to say is they are very flexible. Clean to saturated

Good to hear it has a nice box tone. Bonus point for being able to lean into it. Do you find it best for subtle EQing or can you really dig into it? Have you ever used it on your mix buss? I'm looking for something that can do that but is also great as a general tracking/channel EQ. I haven’t tried it on 2buss but it is capable of being a nice natural Sounding smile curve device. It’s also great for making drums rock kinda like I’d use 550s or BT50s but with the added feature of the output drive… These rock! If buying used try to look out for the ones with the frequencies increasing vertically per band. IIRC these were the later batches with a bit better QC. I got mine for about $500 and it felt like a steal. Indeed that output stage is special. With only one I haven't tried on busses but the output amp is awesome, especially on guitars or keys or anything sustaining. Has almost a hybrid Neve-meets-tube kind of color, strong 2nd order harmonic. I often leave the EQ flat honestly but found it really nice for pushing mids, or bringing in the high shelf and cutting 3 or 6k on the to reduce harshness. The low end is also great when the shelves match well to a source.

Those upcoming Iron Age V2s in 500 series are mighty tempting though...

I recently bought the DRS-8 preamps with the intention that I could use the outputs during mix. I haven't had time to fully explore their application. I've considered buying the EQs but the output section would be redundant at this point.

The Phoenix eqs and the Iron Age V2s were different for me. The Phoenix eqs were ok. They were good, not amazing on bass, kick or snare. But perhaps there was some other purpose where they shine that I have not figured out yet. They were not bad by any means. And Zen Pro audio has a mod with a 40hz hpf which is really nice. The V2 is amazing on bass, kick snare, and has a nice high end to it as well. Josh Seawell reviewed it I believe. So, to me, it is the difference between very good and amazing! Iron Age enters amazing territory imho. I am debating getting another V2. Of course, this thread is about 500 units, and if Iron Age can capture that V2 in a 500 series - wow.

People have mentioned the Phoenix's saturation (I love the option of leaning into it) so curious what you think of the V2s box tone, if any.

Hi jaba - I loved the box tone. Yes it has tone. But I would defer to Josh Seawell to describe it better than me.

It's got a great box tone to it the minute you patch it in you can hear it. One day, I decided to try out their LH95 500s pair on Access Analog and I was even more blown away by those little units than the V2 even. Bigger lows and silkier highs. Turns out though that the 95s are inductor-based so that explains it. I tried the same db boosts and the same frequency points on my V2 and I couldn't get the same sound out of the rack V2 unit, not taking anything away from it on it's own. The LH95 does one thing extremely well but it's probably not as versatile as the V2 for both tracking and mixing.
