I also rely on stuff like Iridium or TH-U or Suhr RL to be able to get tracks down whenever I want. I can re-amp later when I can be loud.

Why do people make decisions on gear (especially shootouts) based on videos done by others? I don’t get it. Never have, never will.

I know it seems obvious, but I start reading these threads and I start thinking am I crazy bothering with recording my amps! I do realise the extra effort is likely only worth it to me - in a million years could the average punter pick out a real amp vs Tonex - no way! It's not extra effort if it that's what it takes to get inspired. I am very happy with the IK Fender collections, but I also can't wait to track with this Princeton Reverb I just acquired and I think I'll be able to get away with it. The exciting part is, what will this little beast pull out of me?

I can’t figure it out. I download ToneX profiles from the app, then open it in Amplitube 5? I can’t figure out where to open them in Amplitube.

I’m trying to decide if I like it as well as mic’ing my amp. It sure is easier. Just sounds a tad more flat and compressed, and maybe more of a fizz sound around the notes that I can’t get rid of. But maybe I’m not doing something right. Seems if so squint my left eye instead of my right, and ai can get them pretty close. Other times, it’s night and day.

Open the Tonex app, then connect by hitting the tonex button on the top right of the app. Then search for "amalgam"...you can then click on any of the captures and when you like one, you click on the download button (Down arrow). Close that out then open Amplitube (make sure you've updated.) Look at the top of the amp section and you should see the tonex option there. Make sure the Amplitube cabinet is turned off too. Then right above the pic of the amp, you can select different captures/amps.

So what's the ToneX consensus? I bought two Kempers back in the day and it always seemed like a soft lower fidelity (aliased?) version of the real thing. I bought packs etc. and profiled my own amps but it didn't work out. However I'm looking for some sort of cab loader because despite being able to crank my 50W valve amp it still rattles the windows and even in another room it's a bit much. That amp was made to play rather large venue's really.. I have a 1W Marshall as my alternate amp so it's neither here nor there. Anywho I've looked at the Tonex, Iridium or just a TC Electronics cab loader for the Suhr and its been interesting.
Actually this is a bit odd, I can hear the difference between these two and it's down to presence / upper frequencies, just skip to 11:00.. Hmm?
Anyway, it seems to me that the ToneX's stock profiles aren't amazing although for someone who generally dislikes anything with the words guitar and sim in the same description I am actually quite impressed with this. One thing that always seperates a real amp from a sim for me is bass resonances, overtones and harmonics. I'd rather cut something out than try to add stuff that's not really there. This seems to nail it, sweet..

Ok so I did a little playing with the TONEX plug in... so ...how is everyone setting their input level for this stuff...?
You know, output of the guitar into HI Z input on say Apollo... why is there no input level standard for the whole process?
cheers

The kemper had a poor DI input with poor transient response. Sounded much better if you used a good DI into the line in. Along with this it has a set amount distortion "types" which the profiler will select when you profile an amp.. I guess it will overlay an eq curve on top of that. There is obviously more going on that just this.... but that seems like the basis of it. This is why kemper profiles start sounding the same after owning it for a while. I did some good work with the kemper but it wasn't very good as a live unit compared to helix or HX stomp. Tonex is interesting to me but the neural dsp plugins are still what i'd use during recording at this point.

Actually just sold my dream 65. Feel like with what little self guitar recording I do, this is enough for me. I might actually buy one of the higher Tonex’ so I can have more than 20 user downloads. Once you reach the 20, you’re stuck there and can’t change.

I just spent yesterday.. going through Tonex ( I bought the SE version as I have bukoo jam points thingies) and comparing it to the Dream 65, and decided to keep the Dream 65. I actually downloaded the Tone King Imperial demo from Neural DSP and tried it as well, (I owned the Mark 1 real amp) and decided that I like the Dream 65 better.. though in real life I really like the actual amp a lot....but it was worth to much money to keep around, and I use my Princeton for live gigs... 8) cheers Wiz

I think I'm prefering Amalgam Fenders to the Dream 65 as well.
Dream sounds pretty much spot on compared to the Deluxe Reverb, but that sometimes ends up being a bit too scooped. I also have a DRRi, so I think they are a bit redundant. For the times that I don't want to record my amp, Tonex with those presets seems enough.
I'll probably sell my Dream as well.

I am digging the free version of this so far. At first I wasn’t sure because the presets weren’t doing it for me compared to my personal Amplitube 5 chains (AT amps + my go-to 3rd party IRs). Then I took some time to dial in the settings and substitute my choice of IRs where appropriate and, lo and behold, I really like the final result for my preferred 70s crunch and 60s clean sounds.
In particular, the top end sounds much sweeter/more natural than the equivalent modeled amps in AT 5, at least with the captures I’ve been using. (Usual disclaimer, I’m not primarily a guitar player and most of my real life experience on the hardware side is playing solid state amps, but I have an ear for different tones from years of playing through amp sims and lots of critical listening to the real deal.)

That amalgam two rock OD50 clean channel with the gain cranked almost all the way up and a strat is badass.

I only have very limited use only had it for a short time , but I thought the amalgam capture’s totally worth it . The Carr capture I’m really liking . Also bought the AC30 and Tone King . The TK won’t load . The amalgam captures seem to have a little more life or realism than my TH U that I’ve been using. Also there 3 for 2 or 5 for 3 deal pretty reasonable
