Do peeps mean the plug in or the actual box: or are they one and the sane ? They have the exact same sound. Pedal is just a player where you can load the profiles you got on the plugin.

Yeah this thing is exactly like the Kemper in that it’s only as good as the capture that was made. All of the Tone Junkies ones are really good so far. And there’s one of a Matchless Independence by Paul Drew that’s really good. So far, I don’t see think I hear a sonic imprint/sameness that I did with the Kemper.

One thing I really like about Tonex Captures is that they don't have that sameness feeling. A Fender sounds like a Fender, and it sounds very different to a Marshall or a Vox. Also, the Brilliant channel of a Vox sounds different to the Normal Channel of the same Vox. I feel that Tonex preserves the original characteristics of the amp very well. And I agree about the Tone Junkies captures. They sound surprisingly well. Surprised me, because it's free and because I don't like his videos, to tell the truth. I still think amalgam is the Top profiler these days. His paid Super Reverb pack and JTM50 is top notch imo.

I’ll totally use a sim for a keeper track, I’m not redoing something that’s working great in the track. Unless it’s crying out for replacement, which would be the same criteria for a real amp track. I’m gloriously immune to theoretical improvements these days. If a plugin is getting me all the way there I’m not going to pull out a bunch of hardware to chase “better.” And yet, sims get used over amps only for convenience, I can work on personal projects when my kids are playing Lego. It’s about creativity, above all. At any actual studio it’s almost always amps, but if I’m engineering and the player brings in a Fractal we use that and it’s totally fine. Has happened exactly once. I’ve also had dufus guitar players insist on playing their Blues Deville despite the pile of superior amps and I’m not one to push on that, it’s not worth brow beating someone who’s about to perform. Is a real tube amp only a theoretical improvement? I guess that was my question about Tonex. I'm certain about my thoughts on S-Gear and a Kemper as I have S-Gear and I've had a Kemper in here many times and the Tone King Imperial mk2 and Princeton Reverb through a AEA R92 and 57 (1073 and AEA pre's) recorded at gig volume (ala Tim Pierce) are a very different sound especially in the critical mids - to my ears definitely not a theoretical difference. But, Tonex is new and perhaps they've greatly improved on the Kemper and emulations like S-Gear. I'm keen to get one in here to demo it. Closest I've ever gotten to the real thing is a Suhr reactive with IR sims, they tend to sound a tad bit more fake than an amp through headphones but the positives include sheer audio fidelity and of course the lack of having to mess around recording an amp. I can't necessarily say it's a bad thing either because if the end result is a more modern, perfect rendition of a song where audio fidelity is key then it's a bit of a no brainer really.

Downloaded the cleans for the Super, Blonde Bassman, AC30 and 50, JTM50, Tone King Imperial and the Two Rock Dumble…and I’m not really sure I’d even use more than that. Drop that into Amplitube with the effects and I’m kindve wondering what else I’d ever use. All of it free.

Best I’ve heard so far is the Neural Quad Cortex with good quality captures. Stunning!!!!! And more importantly the serious guitarists I know think the QC with good quality captures “feels” like playing through their favorite amps moreso than others. I’m not a guitarist though so it’s not my area of expertise. I do use the QC live with my saxophone for effects and EQ and a capture of my BAE Neve Pre/EQ from my studio and it’s stunning. Sounds like I’m playing through my studio chain. I’ve heard great things about Tonex although I haven’t tried it yet.

There’s a video somewhere/YouTube comparing a real amp to captures from Tonex pedal, QC and the Kemper. In that video the Tex and QC were really close…but the Kemper sounded really bad in several of them. Was shocked there would be that much difference.

That QC really put the Kemper to shame in that Rhett Shull (or something like that) dude’s comparison, in my opinion. But then I’ve never thought the Kemper sounded very good. I sure wanted it to, bought it 2-3 times.

ToneX is good enough that I'm going to think twice about recording a real amp in certain scenarios. I still think there's an advantage when recording heavy "chugga chugga" stuff through an amp. Somehow it's still really hard to get that low end that you get with a cranked amp with a sim. The downside is that with a real recording you often have to control that same low end with a compressor on the way in.
But for leads or clean tones? ToneX might have an edge, especially if you don't have an amp collection, good mics, good preamps, or acoustics.

Is the software version of Tonex more resource intensive than the normal Amplitube stuff? Maybe it only matters to people like me who are still on an Intel Mac.

I’m always trying wherever possible to avoid as many “rubber” sound sources as possible. I mean as it is I have to use rubber drums, piano, strings and organ. I can at least record real bass, guitars, acoustic guitars, percussion and vocals - it cuts the sonic compromises down as much as possible. Sound is after all about exciting and moving air, old fashioned though that notion may be.

For many of us, noise *is* an issue, which is why we’re grateful every time a new amp sim goes up a notch in quality. 👍

Kinda goes without saying, right?
If this was a thread about Slate VMS or the Townshend thing, I’d be surprised if someone was like “I don’t get why I would use this when I have a U47, U67 and a 251”. Yeah, you definitely would not use this.

No, Quad Cortex is using machine learning (neural net that they’re weighting to try to prioritize human hearing perception according to their ad copy). TH-U isn’t doing that.

Yeah, you definitely would not use this. I know it seems obvious, but I start reading these threads and I start thinking am I crazy bothering with recording my amps! I do realise the extra effort is likely only worth it to me - in a million years could the average punter pick out a real amp vs Tonex - no way!

Everyone will have their own reason why they do/don’t prefer tools like Tonex or Quad Cortex. I LOVE real amps including the vintage fender and Marshall amps I have here in the studio, but for me, the draw was being able to travel the world with something compact that doesn’t compromise Sound quality. I was playing a festival in Mexico, and it was a beautiful venue and a great sound system, but the sound guy butchered my sound. I decided in that moment, that would be the last time that would happen. I bought the quad cortex a week later, and my sound has been dialed in on stage and better than ever since. I can stick it in my backpack and take it anywhere in the world. It also serves as a four channel mixer. If I want to have them send a monitor mix back to me. I can throw it into the quad cortex and route it to the headphone output for wired headphones, or even to a wireless in ear monitor rig. Problem solved, better sound than ever for me, onstage, and I can take it with me anywhere. I certainly can’t do that with vintage amplifiers.
