John, have you had any experience with the AML ez1073? If so, can you give any comparisons, ignoring the EQ differences?

No...but mostly because Sweetwater offered 12 month financing...(Lets say I had "pause").
BTW, Jeff...I'm rediscovering the 312 again. I'd been using mostly the VP28 and Heider, but man - I really love the open sound of the VP312! Then through the 528...beautiful.

This from Heritage - "This new one doesnt have an eq, it´s basically one channel of our DMA73 in 500 series format. wasnt easy to fit in!" "Same exact stuff, modular pcb construction for easy servicing. Exactly zero compromises!" Following his successful big brother, the 1073/500, the new ´73JR is a mic preamp in a single 500 series slot with some added features that will cover all the recording needs for engineers and musicians that don´t find the need to track with eq. Employing only discrete circuitry and conventional components, the ’73 junior is a faithful 3 stage all class A 1073 preamp. Styroflex and tantalum capacitors have been used throughout. No corners were cut. A useful all discrete class A hi pass filter has been added, essential for recording everything with the exception of probably kick drum and and bass. The Line mode allows for reamping of prerecorded tracks and it´s perfect for adding some class A color to lifeless recordings. The smart switched DI (automatically switches from MIC to DI mode when inserting a MONO ¼” jack ) is an all discrete class A JFET circuit ahead of the MIC transformer, so all the juice is there. Finally, special care has been taken with power handling, implementing internal +24v slow turn on regulation (about 20 seconds to reach full voltage ).This makes your lunchbox PSU healthier and makes the 73JR independent of the rest of the slots. It's REALLY, REALLY freaking awesome. I've got my Neve needs met...and API covered with CAPI...
Big bottom, and just awesome top. I tried out the Neve LB a couple of months ago and I was impressed with it too. I would just be going by memory in comparing the two. I would imagine between the LB, the EZ1073 and the Heritage, you can't go wrong...The build quality is fantastic on the Heritage...This one is a hundred dollars cheaper than the Neve - I like that...

If you have the inclination, I would love to hear the 73 and the capi, with no trim and at 35 dB on both...with the cv4
Cheers

Will do...How about 30db, no trim? I can bottom 35 out... The CAPI - being an API style clone is going to be brighter and more mid forward, so just keep that in mind. As littlesicily and I discussed, I could see choosing the VP28 or Heider on Lower voiced males and girls that didn't belt...and the Heritage for tenors and belty ladies...Looking forward to using the HA73 on acoustics - I'm really liking the Heider/VP28 on acoustics for dense country tracks - crisp and clean...(or dirty)
