Let's take a minute to be grateful for what we have! Sure, technology is frustrating and the companies that make it are even more frustrating at times. Sure, the robots are going to steal our jobs. But think of how far we've come!
So what was your first AD/DA?
Mine was the M-Audio Delta 66 and man was it great! Don't get me wrong. It was impossible to use, impossible to configure, and I had no idea what any of the settings meant and probably did some very weird stuff on the recordings I made with it. But I could afford it and I could hook our old Mackie board up for some submixes and get plenty of channels.
And those pre-amps? Head room for days!!!! (Or so I thought at the time.)
I just recently read the Sound On Sound review for the Delta 66 which I remember reading at the time that I bought it. It's pretty funny. A converter noise level of -96db. That was a feature!
Best part is the package cost about $700 in 2002 money which would be like $1200 now I think. So the cost of an Apollo x4 basically. Wow.

Tascam US-122. No idea what it cost when I bought it, I would have been in high school, or maybe 8th grade? Used it with a computer I built and a pirated version of Cool Edit Pro

I had no idea it could even record stuff when I saw it on his computer. I used it to build MIDI "compositions" (using the term very loosely, I was like 15) just dragging and dropping blocks around the MIDI arranger with stock instruments. But man, they had a version of "In My Life" that really showed off what it could do!!! (not much)

A cassette tape player with a mic plugged into it..
I guess my first "real" ad/da was a sound card in a computer. Probably a sound blaster.

Oh if we go back before interfaces, an old Kmart rectangular cassette deck with a built in mic. Then one of the first Fostex cassette 4 tracks and then a nicer Yamaha 4 track that had effect sends on it.

AD/DA....would be blackface ADAT's as tape machines, then the next 2 gen of that. First converter for a computer, MOTU 24i/o, stayed at 88K2 or 96K because the top end sucked at 44K1 or 48K in comparison.

M-Audio MobilePre USB, paired with an Audio Technica AT3525. Bought sometime around 2006. I had no idea what I was doing, probably sang into the wrong side of the AT mic on several occasions. Didn't know the first thing about EQ or compression.
My idea of "mixing" was putting the Waves SSL Channel on every track and picking presets at random. For "mastering," I remember watching a YouTube tutorial (very difficult to find these back then), copying the exact settings, and using it on every mix without any discretion or discernment.
Crazy thing is, any time I listen back to those recordings, I'm always amazed at how decent they sound. Don't know how I did it.

I worked at a music store and I set up a little home mastering rig so I could make a little money that I didn't have to split with the studio boss.I bought an Echo Gina, a pair of Event 20/20P to go with CEP. Echo and Even were distributed by the same company and I was able to get employee accomadation. I think I picked up a Mackie 1202 to do a little percussion record at home. I know that went to a buddy. I'm not sure where the Gina is, and the Events are in the studio attic. They got brought into service a couple of times when I needed amp repair or replacement after I got the Truth Audio monitors. I should probably sell both sets...

Struggling to remember but I know a Sound Blaster was first followed by a card I can't even remember (some sort of ISA slot headache is all I recall), an Event (pre Echo) Gina, Yamaha DSP Factory, RME cards starting somewhere around 2000-ish. Plenty of others have followed since then.

I know later they looked a bit different and just had an Echo logo. Mine had an Event logo as it's main badge on the breakout box.

I had a pair of Audiofire 12s and an Audiofire 8 for a few years. They weren't too bad, especially for the money. I kind of still have fond memories of them. It was an affordable way to get into 24 or 32 channels that sounded pretty good for the money. I always wondered why more interfaces didn't offer 12 channels instead of 8.

First thing with A/D/D/A in it that I bought for myself would have been an ADAT LX20. We had Blackface ADATs and XT-20s at Overdub, and then John Plymale bought a ProTools TDM rig with 3 888s. After a few albums, I sold my ADAT and got a Digi 001 so I could do edits and comp tracks at home. That Digi 001 had some kind of grounding problem: the moment you plugged in the cable, the card made a grinding, chirping, squealing kind of noise. But hey, I still got work done.
