My Martin D-18 is one of the last things I'd sell, it records like a dream and is amazing for writing and it's gone up 50% in value since I bought it new a few years ago.
I'm a musician first - engineer second so metal boxes would be leaving my place before anything made of wood :-)
My vote - not to sell.

I thought you preferred the Gibson acoustics?
I say sell the Martin, buy a used Gibson for 2k, and use the rest to take a trip to Florida, get some sun, and eat some oysters. St Paddy’s in Tampa is gonna be a good time. Let’s party!!

I’ve got a nice custom shop j-45 too.

Johnkenn - most of what you've put forth as reasons for keeping it don't seem out of true love for the guitar. You sound pragmatic/practical about it, and to me, that says it's an instrument worth releasing back into the wilds.
Not long back I sold a synth very dear to me - it was loaded with "life and death," to be dramatic about it. But somehow I knew it was time to let it go. I found a buyer literally down the road from me and I knew the synth was going to a good home. Plus, I got what I was asking for it without haggling or hassle. I don't regret letting it go, even though I sometimes miss it. It sounds like there's probably some other guitar out there that you'd be happier with... the one you're thinking of selling seems more like it lives "on paper" than in your hands. I'm another vote for selling.
If it helps any, when I sold that synth, I described it to myself as "letting go." Cos I was holding on to all sorts of "But it's a classic... I SHOULD keep it!" feelings that didn't fit with the enjoyment it no longer gave me when I sat down to play it!

Of. A bit off topic. But I just tried a whack full of acoustics. Including a $9k Canuck Collings. The winner was à Boucher OM. Quebec built. Probably crap resale, just a guess. But wiped the floor with the Martins and for me was right there with the Collings and Huss and Daltons. So I guess there are boutique builders that can bring the Martin thing for less. I just guess they might not be great if you need to sell.
Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff Was just talking about some of the boutique builders with the guy that came over to check my guitar out…man, I just haven’t played a H&D, Bourgeois, Collings that I’ve loved. Talking RW 28 style. Always thought Collings were too mid voiced and Santa Cruz is too bright. And I’ve owned several SC’s. Honestly, it probably doesn’t get “better” sounding than the Authentic I have now…probably more projection…and different voicing, but this guitar is only 9 years old too. And talking through this has made me realize I should keep it. Even though it’s not a tool I use every day right now, I’ll probably be happy I kept it in ten years.

Seriously that sounds killer. So…. Keep it!
Mind you my thing is to keep stuff. A lot of toing and froing until I make a choice but then I usually stick with it. Others do otherwise.
Cheers, Geoff

+1 for keeping it. I remember the agony you went through testing out guitars and coming to the conclusion this was the one for you. Imagine doing it all again. $5k for something that is a tool at your disposal isnt too bad to have hanging around. Its not that much $$$. You probably spent more then $5k buying and selling the Retro Sta compressor. You should rename it the Retro Boomerang Sta. Keep it. I have an older late model 1980’s PRS electric guitar i never use but i know i would be very sad if i ended up selling it. Cheers

Btw - this is the second time I’ve realized that my two main mics are Soyuz…I really have no affiliation at all…but I’ve just ended up loving both of these mics.

A small update. The guitar didn’t sell, and I’m kindve relieved…and I went to twist the release knob on the sta and it crumbled away. Strange.

No dice. No sweat, though, in my head it sounds like the platonic ideal of an acoustic guitar which is pretty good.

I've sold or traded two special instruments: a 1965 Fender Precision and a 1968 ES-340. Both solid sweet playing axes that helped me make a living in younger days. In exchange I got mics, stands, an interface etc. All of those things are gone. I miss the instruments and know that replacing them would cost me a lot more these days. But the gear I swapped for taught me a lot that helped me make a living for a lot longer than the years I stood on stage. I'll occasionally kick myself for letting those instruments go, but the trades helped me build a career that was a lot more dependable. There are quite a few on this list who are in my age category, and most of owned a lot of vintage gear when it was brand new. Same for automobiles. Can't help but be a little wistful for some of them.
