Ok, so I just set up my new monitors and I figured that I'd take a break from breaking them in and do some critical listening. Critical listening that won't depress me (biggest thing I learned from four hours of higher end monitors is that my mixes all suck... like, a lot).
Anyway, I've always really loved the VoxBox plugin from UAD. It just sounds great. And once I tried to lowball my way into a used VoxBox unit but failed. Man, I was relieved. $3k woulda been a helluva deal but just so much money to spend when I already love the plugin.
So I'm not saying I'm gonna go out and buy a VoxBox. I'm not. Couldn't even if I wanted to. But...

Hmm, if you ever wondered about the ob vs plugs difference, the bass comparison is illustrative
Through the Box, way more girth, presence and bottom.
The vox was also interesting as the eq profiles were different, the plug in accentuated the hf content, the bleed in the vocal mike was much more apparent as were those adjacent freq.
I thought all plug in passes sounded good but different.
I have the plug, i’d prefer the box, if money was no object. So, the plug certainly gets you in the ballpark and then you would mix to taste anyway.
As usual Josh, well done: thx!

Here in my little project studio, I run Apollo Unison pres and UAD plugs, no outboard (except for a Dangerous 2-Bus LT).
Josh’s Voxbox hardware and UAD plug-in comparison stunned me. It took just a few hours after watching to order some gear from Stam. Now I’m drawing up patch bay configurations, etc. Wondering where I’m going to rack it all. Here we go.
Look what you have done Josh! As always, a simple and useful demonstration with this video. Thanks and best wishes with your recovery.

This shootout was a bummer for a couple of reasons… 1. I know Manley worked really hard with universal audio making them go back and tweak things so this was as close as they could possibly get. 2. This isn’t my VOXBOX so I had to give it back 😫. Thanks for letting me borrow it Mark Kano 👍🏻

Plug ins are convenient, but once you go quality OB, its hard to go back.
A hybrid system: ob while tracking, plugs for mixing and a couple of choice OB on 2 buss, would be my sweet spot.

The VB plug sounds ok, but pales vs the box, the real vbox sounds killer!

Bass is really, well, not close.

What I’ve learned is that the music I make and mix is much more open than other styles. You can hear the instruments. So I think a lot of people on these various forums and YouTube videos are doing different things where the plug-ins might not matter as much. Dense mixes with virtual instruments For the style of stuff that I do, you can really tell the difference. And then if it’s solo acoustic? Anyone can tell.

The DI on the VoxBox is fat as duck. Love it on bass.
The Eq is another marvelous thing. Super musical and smooth.
But I've never been a fan of the Dynamics nor the preamps.

You should get rid of yours, I'll take it off your hands. I'll even take it out of the rack for you! That's the kind of guy I am.

Great review as usual, seawell . And wanted to mention that your new studio logo is awesome! Thanks! I got a little neon lighted sign with the new logo as a Christmas gift that I'll stick in the background once I'm able to get back out to the studio 🔥

At this juncture I'm starting to believe seawells got a grudge against people's bank accounts, great vid as always but I'm not sure I can afford to watch them.

But, God gave you a chance to do better at that: maybe you’ve been working too hard. Do you know, as part of his back surgery, Michael J Fox also had to relearn to walk, plus for shitz and giggles, he fell and broke an arm. You might enjoy his new book, (exploring the power of optimism), now that you are a recording man of leisure !

If you could take only the compressor/limiter out of it and leave the di and the EQ, I would be down.

A little bit of a zombie post, but after trying the native UA that was on sale last week and going down the rabbit hole, I just ordered/bought a Voxbox. Damn you Seawell in the nicest way possible!

Does the voxbox do the same thing as the manley core in that the compressor comes in first before the mic pre? I never got used to that in my manely core.

660. Order pending. In the meanwhile, I picked up an Audio-Scape 76D.

I have tried UAD's voxbox in the past and gave it another go during this weeks sale. I wasn't very impressed with it in the past or now. I have never had experience with the real deal. So I had no preconceived expectations of the plug in. I just felt it doesn't do anything for me that I can't get in other plug ins. I do have the stand alone pre from UAD. it's ok. I much prefer my outboard mic pres. I have several of their unison pre amps. Their century channel actually surprised me. The 1073 eq I like. I like it better than the 1084 they have. The 88rs is pretty good as well.
It was tempting to get the plug in onsite but I ultimately passed.
