I like to use SD3 for simple sample augmentation of real drums I’ve tracked. I also have some sample hits that I’ve recorded over the years that I still like. This is a good reminder to make some more of those.

Any new ones? Good dead smacky? Didn't really like the Patrick Carney expansion... I am a fan of the Hansa vocal booth kick. It would be pretty easy to make samples if you don’t want to use the SD3 app for triggering.

I'm not a drum sample person yet, but, I know Jake Reed released a Super Dead Drum sample pack, and he's a beast. jakereedmusic.com/Aaron Sterling has some great samples as well. Also a beast. aaronsterling.com/samples I know nothing about samples, but I deeply respect both of these dudes and their playing and recording chops.

I’ll second the samples that Sterling has put out over the years. Lots of variety in those and they work well with the music I produce when I need a little augmentation.

It does sound super cool. I got an Aaron Sterling pack through That Sound. Remember those guys? Not sure if they’re still around. I’ve also been looking at this for dead drum samples: www.circlesdrumsamples.com/dead1975www.circlesdrumsamples.com/dead1973

I have such a tuned dry drum kit set up now in the studio. I can record some bars with that sound if you want tomorrow?

I’ve gotten a lot of use out of Drum Drops 70s Session Superstar this year. Some nice clean studio kit a la Jeff Porcaro or Steve Gadd on a Steely Dan record.

Big fan of this pack lately:

Also, +1 for Drumdrops and Circles. The 'Tape' pack from Circles is unreal.

Any new ones? Good dead smacky? Didn't really like the Patrick Carney expansion... I feel such tremendous options-anxiety whenever I need to dip into canned kits already! Still using Naughty Seal Perfect Drums as my daily driver. Really hope the developer gets to an update eventually and it doesn't fade into the dustbin of abandonware. That VSTi gets me through 99% of my chores when a shitkit needs a facelift.

The Marble Room kit is stunning the snare is exactly my kind of snare sound, really gutsy and a great snap too.

When I was wrapping up my EP, I had a sit down with a producer/collaborator friend and listened to 8 or 9 songs that were up for inclusion. One of the things we did, aside from figuring out which songs went best as a cohesive release, was to actually change out the kit on several songs that weren’t originally using Hansa vocal booth. It definitely helped tie the tracks together, even when some songs then needed a bit of Sunset live room added back in via the IK verb.
Right now I’m digging Hit Maker a lot, but I pulled up a Kramer track the other day and got it into really nice territory with mostly fader moves and some saturation etc.
We’re spoiled and I’m grateful to the forum regulars here for hipping me to so much cool stuff like SD3.

Any new ones? Good dead smacky? Didn't really like the Patrick Carney expansion... If I sent you samples, can you just load them into your fake-drums platform? I have a really nice mid-69s steel shell Gretsch 14x5 snare that has that "good dead smacky" sound to it . . . and a 24" Ludwig kick that is also big round dead and smacks. Snare: top left, T-funk M80 1073, HPF80, 76F Snare: top right, C460 1073. HPF80 76F Snare bottom: 441 Focusrite 115, hpf100 Kick in RE27, Focusrite 220. 350 carved, hpf@39 Limiter at 0 Kick out U47Fet ƒ 220. 350 carved, hpf@39 Limiter at 0

Any new ones? Good dead smacky? Didn't really like the Patrick Carney expansion... I typically have my best luck sampling the kit I'm recording for a given record or song, and using those sounds to reinforce the recorded drum tracks. It's not necessarily that my drum sounds or room are better than the commercial libraries, but I do find the blend can be more seamless (with special attention paid to phase concerns) and obviously the sounds fit in more transparently. And then, the nice thing about building up this sort of library is, I can often sneak my 'all time' best sounds into newer productions, because the ambience will match (since it's the same room), or sometimes even the kit will match (if we're using house drums). I've got a bunch of tci format instruments I've made that I'd be happy to share if folks here thought they'd be useful. Just say the word and I'll upload em.

This. Magic. Edit: especially if you're on PT and using the tab-to-transients thing. Can't go wrong.

I can never get samples to gel with the rest of the real kit. It always sounds a bit plasticky to me. I've had much better luck sampling the kit and then compressing or eqing the hell out of the individual samples.
