Yeah, you are so right John - it's everything we aspire to as recordists; capture the performance without any crap. It of course is dependent on good musicians, good song , good instruments, good room probably in that order. They make it seem easy; thanks for the heads up.
Cheers, Ross

Sounds great! Excellent, what do you know about signal chains ? It was a fun and rare opportunity to totally nerd out and record them with all vintage Neumann U67s through old Neve 1066 preamps on voices and DW Fearn pres on guitars.

Goodness gracious, four 67s! That's amazing. Sounds absolutely phenomenal. Great work spindrift . Excellent engineering, and great songwriting + musicianship, too. I really enjoyed listening to this.

Beautiful recording. but KILLER harmony choices! Vocal and guitar voicings. Great choices.

Whew, rarely can get away with that much open bass on acoustics, usually the playing dynamic won't allow it. Sounds great.

Thank you gentlemen. These two are really easy to record...they just make good sounds....and the song and performers are doing 95% of the lifting here.
It was a whirlwind weekend with the Sisters Folk Festival happening. I don't remember if I had compressors in the chain but my hunch is not. (If I did, it would have been vocals into a POM Fairchild 670 and guitars into a Mohog Mo3A LA3A copy). I couldn't find my Pauly Ton pop screens so we kept the 67s at a safe distance and rolled without them. The vintage 67s all have S2 rumble filter lifted. Recorded to RADAR Ultra-Nyquist Dante converters at 48/24.

I was planning on buying the stereo version and then Brandon changed tact and decided he was done with that work. How do you find it? Have you compared to others? (Yes, I'm drifting off-topic, but don't we all? It's like our jam in these parts.)

(Yes, I'm drifting off-topic, but don't we all? It's like our jam in these parts.) It gets a lot of use. I’ve never used a real LA-3A so I don’t know how it compares except it sorta sounds like an LA2A but not tubey. I talked to Brandon a few months back (he lives in the same area as me) and he is pretty done with pro audio. It’s a race to the bottom at this point and he was just a one man shop. I actually really like his gear and suspect it will become classic in its own way going forward.

Jeez John, that just makes me think I should give up or start practicing a whole lot more. The playing was flawless, the vocals beautiful, the songwriting deep, and the recording stellar.
Thanks for posting, that was inspiring.

I actually really like his gear and suspect it will become classic in its own way going forward. I know what you're saying. I absolutely love my Mohog 76. It's different to my other 76s, like the Audioscape A D and F, I kind of think of it as a UA 1176J or K revision, if they had kept going! Not everyone is cut out for this business and being a one-man shop is definitely tough. ON TOPIC. I can't think of ANHTHING to criticize on this recording. It is just the kind of example of how great a simple recording can sound. And not sterile!

Hi Spindrift were the mics in Fig 8 - the angle of them says yes to me Cheers, Ross That’s what I would have thought too due to the focus and separation that was achieved. But no, cardioid all around. I put it up to the good posture they’re demonstrating…and Sound Radix AutoAlign.

Do you recall what the guitars were? I’m a sucker for a maple sided jumbo. This one looks like it might be J185 sized? Perhaps my favourite acoustic. But a slope shouldered can be great too. I don’t think this one is a Gibson.
Cheers, Geoff
