Has anyone use the chandler tg mic for guitar cabinets? And will also use it for acoustics and vocals. I need to get a good condenser mic for my guitar cabinet recording. ‘I do have a stager ribbon mic. I could combine it with that or by itself. I was recommended a u87 AI. But maybe this is a better option?

Personally, for my money, I think there are a lot better options. That's all I really want to get into now for fear of calling out the heat. I was never impressed with the clips. I will say that the 87 has been an all-rounder for me in years past when I had few mics, and less money. It's probably not the first mic I'd pull out now though. So many options available.

I also thought of the UA ox box as I have some nice amps.

I originally thought this had a built in TG mic pre.. I was super excited. Then they released it and it’s essentially a tone shaper. That was a big letdown.
If it could replace a $1k EQ, maybe it’s worth it? Seems like the filters should be on that API/Neve level. If so that would bring the mic down to $900 range give or take. I agree there are some great options out there now. However.. I have to admit, I LOVE the way this one looks (aside from the flames- which aren’t that crazy)
Edit: sweetwater has 13 5-star reviews, lots of raving, impressive

I don't find that I love condensers on guitar cabs, unless maybe it's more of a room mic kinda thing.

KSM32s are fantastic on guitar cabs and won't break the bank, either. Maybe not as sexy as a TG, but they do the job quite well. Its also quite good on acoustics, but maybe not amazing on vocals.

I also have trouble with condensers on amps unless they're more for the room. The exception being a C37 and C38 but there's so many excellent dynamic and ribbon options I would go there first (M88, 160 and 409 seem to be my favs).

I don't find that I love condensers on guitar cabs, unless maybe it's more of a room mic kinda thing. I have always found on cabs up close that little bit of compression from a dynamic to be a very good thing. I learned live it was just easier in the days of analog than another ch of compression.

would you use a soyuz launcher on a 57 for the guitar cabinet?

would you use a soyuz launcher on a 57 for the guitar cabinet? Sure. Or even without the Soyuz. It's worked for thousands of records.....

TG Mic owner here. I don't use it on guitar cabs, but that's because I'm usually using it elsewhere with recording a band, and I have other great options for guitar cab. But it certainly would do the job well. On acoustic it's fantastic. I like it on vocals as well, as the different selections can really offer many options. I have a couple of better options for vocals, but this mic certainly does a good job. I mainly like the TG either on Kick, Mono Overhead or a Room mic, and Acoustic instruments.
I think if you bought something like the 87 style from Serrano, Stam, or United Studio Tech, you'd have an option that is a studio workhorse. I have the Serrano and it works well for cabs and acoustics too. Just a different flavor. But cheaper than the TG, and sometimes that's a very good thing.

would you use a soyuz launcher on a 57 for the guitar cabinet? That sounds like the definition of hell to me.

Just get a Beyer M88 to blend with your Stager if you like using two mics on guitar cabinets and call it a day. I can’t see how it would be anything other than amazing.
Then, as already mentioned, pick up a Serrano 87 just to have another nice all rounder on hand.

I don't find that I love condensers on guitar cabs, unless maybe it's more of a room mic kinda thing. I’ve only had two exceptions to this in the last 25yrs: 1. an M269 I used to have regular access to that just killed on guitar cabs, esp. Vox or Fender; 2. I once miced a Fender Dual Showman with a 57 and a 414, and it sounded amazing. The player was incredible, though: he would’ve made anything sound amazing. But those are my only two exceptions that I can remember!

I've had the TG mic and the UA Ox and I didn't like either.
You've already got a ribbon. I'd get a 57 to combine with that for cab recording. For all arounder, I'd get something classic and proven. If you want the name recognition for clients, I'd get a U87 or some 414s or something like that. If you just want the sonics, I'd get a 3U Warbler or three.

I was on an SM57 and M201 in XY, tip to tip, up against the grill on a single cone for the longest time. The last couple of years I’ve been on a kick of an MBD 219 SC and 414 or OC818 in omni, both against the grill. However, I just grabbed the VIP-60 specifically for trying on electric guitar cabs, so I’ll be playing with that 8-16” back.

I also thought of the UA ox box as I have some nice amps. I record my Tone King Imperial cab with an AEA R92 (dark side) into an AEA RPQ 500 ribbon pre and an SM57 into a 1073. The sound is considerably more "real" than the OX box imho. Personally, I've yet to find a better guitar cab mic than the AEA R92 - it's really lovely on vocals, tambourine and acoustic guitar too in you want a vintage sound. It has a bright and dark side - I highly recommend a demo of the R92 :-)

I have used my TG mic for guitars. I thought it sounded great with a lower volume clean tone. Not so great for overdriven loud amps. I still prefer a unidyne 57 and a royer ribbon for cranked cabs.

I’ve had the TG for a while now and have had some trouble finding something it’s GREAT on. Not sure I’ll keep it yet. It’s a bummer cause the hype around it was serious haha. I feel like I need like 3 days of messing with it to figure out what works and what doesn’t with all the choices. Option overload kinda sucks sometimes.
A 67 in front of an amp straight into a compressor no preamp is a beautiful thing.

actually thinking now of the AEA KU5A. it sounds fantastic on the clips on youtube. or a Stager SR5. that mic is a little cheaper but its passive. through an avedis MA5. and maybe adding a RND 542 tape emulator to the sound for my electric guitar cabinet.

Honestly, there are conventions for capturing the best of a certain instrument or amp or combination that have come into being for a reason: they work.
Nothing beats a Royer 121, but keep it a foot back from the speaker, aimed at the center. Also, previously comments about a 57 or 201 are dead-on due to how they can also accentuate the mids in a mild way and bring the capture to the ix in the right way.

ISNIP A 67 in front of an amp straight into a compressor no preamp is a beautiful thing. So true. All that great sounding early 80s metal guitar sound? I have been told this was used a fair bit. Wasn't present at the time due to being in school but heard the tales and now have used this myself.
