I had a vintage U89 since it was new. I used it a lot in the beginning because it was the only quality condenser mic I had. As I acquired more mikes in later years I rarely used it. Not because it was a bad mic but because I had others that would do more of what I needed specifically. The U89 always worked well on thin sounding acoustic guitars. I used it on many vocalists with great results. It always took EQ very well. I traded it a couple years ago for some 500 series gear and don't regret it a bit. I almost never used it and it was too valuable to remain in the closet so I made the decision to get rid of it.

I have an M147 here at the moment. It’s pretty useful especially relative to the generally low opinion of it online. I did open it up and turn on the hi pass filter recently, which seems to make it a bit less wooly up close. Of course, it’s not a U47 at all, thus the poor regard, I suppose.

Has anyone mentioned the m367? Now that’s a sleeper and rare as hens teeth! Well it's basically an M269 with a French connector. The m269 is my favourite vintage Neumann. I've owned them all now with a small (huge) disclaimer that I haven't owned an m49.. which I want to do sometime in the future 😎 But other than that, 47, 67, 269, 87, sm69, km56-86 etc etc! |
