Anybody got a preference between the Auratones and the Mixcubes? I have both. I much prefer the Auratones. The Mixcubes sound like they were designed to sound bad on purpose. I find them to be too peaky. The Auratones sound more natural to my ears. I tried both the Reftones and Auratones side by side, and went home with the Auratones.

Anybody got a preference between the Auratones and the Mixcubes? This SOS review by Mike Senior may offer some different but nevertheless helpful advice: www.soundonsound.com/reviews/avantone-active-mixcubeAnd in particular this section: "Personally, I've always thought that the 'grotbox' argument was a bit of a red herring in the first place with respect to the 5C, so I'm very positive about the new direction that Avantone have taken, and I would certainly prefer to work on the MixCubes than on any of the original Auratones I've heard. However, while the cleaner MixCube sound is a dream for balance judgements, the same attribute makes it less useful as a lo‑fi reference, so I'd feel more inclined to cross‑reference my mixes on a few true real‑world systems to retain more insight into the impact of distortion and resonance issues further down the line. As Avantone are at pains to point out, however, this speaker is not designed to do everything on its own, but to complement other studio monitor hardware that can't deliver the same specialist mix‑balancing capabilities. On these terms, the MixCubes are an essential product for anyone serious about mix engineering, and this reviewer, for one, will be voting with his cash. "

I liked the Avantone while I had it. It was nice.

Do you guys use a stereo pair of mixcubes, or a single mono?

Do you guys use a stereo pair of mixcubes, or a single mono? I bought two because I was excited at the time about them. Recently, I have shoved them together on the bridge so, I could do fine with just one.

Imo any 3” to 6” speaker without a crossover will give you a good similar reference. It’s just a crappy smaller speaker.

Do you guys use a stereo pair of mixcubes, or a single mono? I use a single mono original Auratone 5c off to my left powered by a Hafler P1000. It’s my snare and vocal level 2nd check and also let’s me hear how the bass is speaking with no bass response available!

Panasonic HJE120 earbuds. They're not crazy unforgiving, but if something is off, you'll hear it (especially in the low end). I've found more issues with the low end on mixes with these than anything else. Finally grabbed a pair of these. You're not joking about being unforgiving in the low end. I like to do down and dirty rough mixes on my laptop when I've got time to kill and I'm not at home. These are way better than my AirPods for doing a quick mud clean.

Unforgiving speakers? Well unfortunately... Don Rickles died. But William Munny is still with us onscreen. And Munny talks...
