I sold my (mint) Minimus 7's, to Dave Martin... Many moons ago. Nice to know they went to a great home. Same thing with some sleeper mics and hardware I sold to Harvey Gerst. Chris Mics and Harvey in a Speaker thread seams wrong 🤪

Dan do you feel the Fostex are a speaker that would showcase problems similar to how a car speaker does? If so I’d be really interested. As far as the drivers do they not last long/ would you recommend purchasing them? Fostex was more lo fi think clock radio speaker. Maybe the car stereo in a '79 pinto... average car system today even stock is much nicer & has more bandwidth. Those fostex boxes were mainly used in broadcast, like remote news vans & mobile NPR rigs. The speaker itself was nothing special... $20 vifa driver. The thing that separated it from all the other boxes with 4" speakers was the box itself was designed for everyday pro use... little metal brick with onboard power not a wall wart etc Great thing about those & similar... auratones, minimus 7 was what they didn't reproduce. Since its a big ball of midrange you switch over from the main pair to the mono box and realize wow... this vocal is way too loud... or way buried... or the snare just disappeared... wow were did all the reverb go? Lots of boxes will do the same thing. If you want that maybe get a $59 Bluetooth speaker. Mix balance check. Auratone 5C and Fostex 6301 are decent bandwidth limited speakers though. Better drivers than what’s in a soundbar and the Fostex is a tank, especially the newer ones with the detachable power cable. The avantones are trashy though.

The avantones are trashy though. Yes... but now we're very obviously on the flip side of the spectrum from where the question started... maybe? Auratones & whatnot... the balance check speakers aren't like PMC/ATC/Dyn blah blah. Which is sort of the point of a small cheap box. One of my all time favorite mix check speakers was the one built into the meter bridge of my old Studer A80. Had an excellent way of revealing mix elements that were too far in/out of the pocket. Like the vocal that's 4dB too loud because we got used to it on the mains. On the studer it was obvious. Ultimately you need both hi fi & lo fi. For a couple years the only speakers I had up were Dynaudio BM15's and a pair of minimus 7's stacked together and about 9 feet from the desk so they hit me as mono. That was great until I blew up the Min7's. Really the "best" speakers promote confidence. The ability to say "yeah that's good" and move on vs second guessing everything... well, these are bottom shy so I need to push things a little more for translation? Nah. If your doing that somethings not right.

OP is kinda describing Auratones or similar. Something tiny that makes it obvious if you can't hear something. Generally if something passes the tiny speaker test, it's mostly there everywhere else. It's kinda like the iPhone on a table test. I use a 1RU powered monitor panel with 1 inch-is speakers and a 4" sub (!) and it's almost always right. On the opposite end, I have giant horn loaded Klipsch La Scala, and they'll let you know right away if something is remotely harsh or something in the low mid bass is off. Without a completely tuned room, more speakers and comparisons seems like the best answer. Maybe, I have a set of mixcubes and one of the reasons the Core 59's won is because in terms of car / laptop / kitchen stereo translation it gave me more of a guiding hand than the LYD's / cubes combined. Car stereo's have to be the biggest PITA out of the lot, I have a multi-point Bose with a big ass sub and I swear down it shows up more issues than most studio monitors. Some really expensive studio speakers are so technically proficient / flat that nothing seems to affect them. I find it difficult to work with those because unless something is seriously out of whack it all appears fine to me, too much poking around in the dark. On the other hand some monitors have an attitude problem and nothing is ever good enough which leads me to over engineer the track. I'm comfortable in the middle of those two, I need enough information for it to be useful but not completely alien compared to my intended translation mediums.

Yeah, those that'll take anything you throw at them, the amp doesn't complain and the cones don't show fatigue, so there's no artifacts to clue you like a cheaper amp/speaker.

Still have a pair of minimus 7s and a Yamaha A100a stereo power amp from the mid 90s when I had a little 4 track Cassette recorder. I ought to sell em as a bundle on Reverb for $6500 or something.

Well the ATCs have no bass and are meant to be boundary loaded. They’re like smaller than HS8 Yamahas that cost thousands of dollars. That’s why they work. You will never, ever get that “raw tracks are raw” rawness out of most other brands of speakers. I would love to understand your post better, could you elaborate? What does boundary loaded mean? What in them allows that rawness? Source of curiosity: I have (and adore) ATC25s from before but need to treat my new ”control” room from scratch.

I have a very honest relationship with Proacs. If it doesn’t sound good it doesn’t sound good. Love balancing on them and can do problem solving and sonic arranging with them.

As far as I understand it, boundary loading means that you place your loudspeakers close to a wall (boundary) to get the benefit of a bass boost to supplement the bass response of the loudspeaker in free space. I do this myself with my tiny ATC SCM10 Pro's, and despite their rated roll-off starting at 80Hz (albeit at 6dB/octave due to their sealed cabinets, rather than the 12dB/octave of a typical ported design) I still get a small amount of output right down to 20Hz. Martin Ok thank you, yes I think I went by something similar mentioned in the manual and put them as close to the wall as the Sound Anchors will allow. They certainly allow for a decent amount of mixing success even before a single piece of sound treatment was up.

I love my ATC SCM12/mono Auratone combo for honesty. The ATC's give me a nice big picture thing, especially with the sub I added. I can balance really well on them. I love the mono Auratone for the same reason others have stated. I can get really obvious checks on elements I may have gotten too used to on my mains, like vocal level, eq balance, verbs, etc. Never have any issues when I take it to the car/earbuds etc after working on that system. Every once in a while if I feel like I'm way off, I'll set my DAW's output to the built in speakers in my iMac. That's always a fun check too.

Panasonic HJE120 earbuds. They're not crazy unforgiving, but if something is off, you'll hear it (especially in the low end). I've found more issues with the low end on mixes with these than anything else.

Don't have time to read other people's responses. I'll just blast you with "AURATONE."
Any kind of single driver, unported cube speaker. This does it for me.
Any kind of Auratone or clone, doesn't really even matter which "brand" you choose, and don't waste time on "snobbing it out" just get one that looks OK.
I built my own, oh well, I had to. I don't even really use them, but they are unforgiving as all hell, and it's fun to click on them once in a while in the speaker selector.
I've learned to work without them.

Beyer 770 16ohm are what I use to help me with lows and low mids in my home setup, they kind of have a low mid forwardness to them. That’s where I push too much on NS10’s so they compliment each other nicely. I haven’t overcooked low mids since using the 770, I’d have to intentionally want it to push too far. NS10 and 770 work great together.
I still have to use something else for the 8k-20k range

For those of you using Auratones or Mixcubes or monitors like them, are you typically just using one in mono or using two for stereo?

My Mixcubes are so close together, they might as well be mono. I still hit the mono button, though.

Anybody got a preference between the Auratones and the Mixcubes? I’ve had both. Actually Reftones as well…take what I say with a grain of salt, because I’ve owned all 3 but at various points in my skill level development. To me, the mono Auratone accomplishes what I want that speaker to do better than my old stereo Mixcubes or stereo Reftones ever did. Maybe it’s the mono thing though? Whatever it is, I love using that little speaker.

Passive. I have a cheap little rolls amp that powers it just fine.
