What about it would make it a gamechanger? I guess you don’t have to have the I/O to support 8 pres.

Scarlett Octo, RME 12 Mic, ASP 800, ADA8200, Neve OPX, RND RMP-D8 etc..
There's a few other options out there already Martin.

It's basically Heritage's version of the Neve OPX. Same price. I'm personally not a huge fan of these all in one boxes. I'd rather just have 8 pres and choose my conversion but that's just me.

Yeah, this was my first thought.
Heritage does look like a really cool option in comparison to the OPX, though. Way more routing options, two channels with variable HPF, output trims for each channel, as well as transformers on the outputs. Seems like a better deal overall.

I agree. And the ability to drive the output which was left off the OPX for some odd reason, price I guess. If you're getting one of these I assume one of the main goals is recording drums and not being able to drive the pre when recording drums is a big bummer. Price in the US seems competitive on the Heritage, In the EU it seems it's going to be 4500€ which is getting a bit pricey.

If you’re in the u.s. and you purchase one let me know and I’ll send you a sticker with a cartoon of my face to go with it. That’s a game changer right there. Not to mention you’re getting transformer balanced British style preamps AND conversion for under $450 a channel. Mostly the sticker with my face though… unless you happen to be into that whole “recording gear thing”

Ooh, ADAT connection. This just became a major contender for me.

Ooh, ADAT connection. This just became a major contender for me. Still the best way to move 8 channel digitally… at least the easiest. If your already invested into 500 series also check out the ost8 which released today which is an 8 channel 500 series rack with adat

I figured the A-D would be a big factor if it holds up against something like a Burl.

I figured the A-D would be a big factor if it holds up against something like a Burl. I can't imagine it would be anything close to Burl in terms of quality. 3k for 8 preamps, transformers on input and output, I can't imagine they had a ton of money left for super high end conversion.

Agreed. The conversion is an after thought. I wish these companies would either just offer units like these without comversion or offer it as an option card so that you don't have to pay extra for something you don't need. Now that being said, 8 channels of Neve style pres, with the given feature set and asking price of this unit, does make me at least have to think about it, regardless of the converters or not.

I know what you mean Brice, Quint, but sometimes there can be a quality leap at a price point that previously was lacking. I was just wishing out loud that somehow the conversion would be on par with some of the better converters.
I like the work flow of my Apollo, and I only use a few UAD plug-ins, but I really like them. It's always been the Apollo's conversion that was lacking something. Me personally, I don't need 8 channels since I record one or two channels at a time. Still, I anticipate eventually needing more.

The AD card in the Neve 1073 OPX is optional, what seems odd to me is it's $995.00 for a single Neve 1073 500 and then $4K for eight preamps?

Focusrite 428 and 828 comparable?

The Bomber is killer. And also, it’s like 10 years old, right!?
On the other hand, Burl has a rich history of converter design since the guy used to design for, um… UA. Oh wait, Apollos suck so how can the Burl be good?
😅

Focusrite 428 and 828 comparable? Its actually cheaper. The ISA 828 is $3,499 and you need an option card for $999. This has been the place holder on my list for a while now. The 428 is $2299. It's only (4) preamps, but with the option card it allows you to use the (4) additional channels of conversion for eternal preamps. So the big questions here are how does it actually sound and how good is the conversion? The HA Elite series preamps are ok. Not great, but ok. I remember preferring them to Warm. I imagine these preamps are those same designs.

Yes, there are lots of 8 channel preamp boxes that go ADAT, but other than the OPX how many of them are going for the 1073 sound? The Heritage has transformers on the input and output. The OPX just on the output. Also, the OPX needs Dante. Heritage is ADAT.
If you aren't using the converters on this, you may as well buy separate 500 series pres. With this, someone could have a small desktop interface with ADAT expansion and be able to track drums or something more with nice preamps. Collectively, the preamps, converters, and routing options have a good value considering what they are asking.

And I know converters are an endlessly debated hot topic but I seriously doubt they're going to be a problem on this unit. I could probably never justify spending the cash on this but I certainly would be quite happy to have one and put it to frequent use. And who has even used or listened to one of these yet anyway? How on earth is it even possible to complain about the converters already? Sheesh.

I know what you mean Brice, Quint, but sometimes there can be a quality leap at a price point that previously was lacking. Hmm disagree, I have an Aurora (n) and MOTU 1248. They both do their jobs very well..

If the preamps are on par with the DMA 73 or 73JR, this is actually crazy good value for the money. If it's Elite series, still cool, but maybe not quite as appealing. Although I still feel like I'd take that over an OPX.

This seems like a screaming good deal to me. $412/channel for good Neve Pres with input/out Carnhills? I'd buy this in a heartbeat if I was starting over and didn't already have a killer setup. The routing is great for what it is, and for all the debate over converters its been a long time since I heard ANY converter that outright sucked. Even mediocre conversion is pretty damn good these days. Its a deal without the conversion, with conversion its a home run. I bet they sell a boatload.

Oh wait, Apollos suck so how can the Burl be good? 😅 Well, the Burl does sound great, perhaps not everyone's preference, but great sounding nevertheless. The Apollo is a different animal. The Apollo's could sound better. For all their hype about specs, the conversion is lacking something, it's a bit narrow and honky in places. I've used an Apollo since the first week they were released and have found it to be an incredibly reliable and well built tool. That doesn't mean I shouldn't like to see the platform go a little further into higher end sound quality, especially in the conversion aspects. Shadow, as to my saying that sometimes there can be a big quality leap at a price point, I was mainly referring to computer technology. Huge leaps in power, memory, applications etc. do happen occasionally. After all, much of the gear we use involves computational ability, so it seems to me that at some point, a company will make a piece of gear that rivals a Burl or other high end converters at a much lower price point. To me it's a matter of when, not if. Then maybe I'm wrong and it's just wishful thinking since I can't afford the gear I'd like to have for my work yet.
