I don't know that I understand all the details on these M1 machines correctly, but if Unified Memory enables less overall Ram use because of the way it's shared with faster internal SSD's instead of copied,..does it flip the old audio setup thought of using 1 external drive for your session files and another external drive for your VI's, to perhaps now choosing a setup on the M1's of instead of upgrading the Ram, you buy a larger faster internal SSD and run all your session files and VI's from the internal drive because it would all process faster through Shared Ram,...... or would there be no noticeable benefit because the processing power alone works as fast as you need for audio anyway while using external drives, even at low buffer settings, so you might as well save some dollars using cheaper external drives than paying Apple's drive upgrade prices?

A good question. I only have a few vi, plus logic’s, all on my m1 mini’s 256 boot drive and I have 16 of ram, zero problems so far.
I have external drives for storage, the fastest is usb3 and used to run slate drums from it with my 2012 i7, can’t imagine the m1 would have a problem if I put Slate’s 20 gigs of data on the usb3 drive.

I just bought a Sandisk SSD for storing samples and holy shit…I can run at 32 samples with a SD3 Hansa 6000 Mb preset and IK B3X with all kinds of verb and effects running on it without it even breaking a sweat. The presets for SD3 load in about 3 seconds.

I’ve talked a lot lately about convenience and simplifying Workflow. I have zero doubt this will make me want to create more.

I would like to know as well, because I really think I need to offload my reverb IR's and sample libraries to a t-bolt/usb 3 SSD to keep my main drive from filling up...

How many tb3 ports do you need ?
Owc has a Black Friday sale, maybe check them out, they had a good one for the m1.

I just feel like I won't be using all the bandwidth available if I dedicate one of my two Tbolt's to a single drive, so perhaps I could have a few ports there for different things so I don't have to hot plug drives as I need them. OWC looks interesting I'll check them out thanks!

I should take a snapshot of my usb cables and drives and backup drives for you. I got so many damn things connected. With the probable need to add more external for sample banks, probably should have some kind of TB hub although, I suppose I could just daisy chain any TB drives. The ports are supposed to be usb 4 so I think you can daisy chain them, too. So maybe that is what I will dedicate my other TB/C port for... good thinking.

Good to know it was loading SD3 Hansa in 3 seconds and ran this and other sample libraries without breaking a sweat at 32. What drive are you running your Pro Tools/DAW sessions from then?

@chase if you did an inventory, maybe time to ask yourself what is storage and what is active, eg, vi library, etc., boot drive.
Maybe just dedicate the USB spinning drives to storage and buy the biggest boot drive that makes economic sense:1-2 Tb and think about partitioning it: one side for computer ops and main software, other side for vi’s and plugs? Or buy a large external ssd drive between now and Christmas when you find and good deal and keep mbp drive to 1 TB?
As you said confirm what chains you could run now to confirm what isn’t hooked up ?

With Tb3 to hdmi converter you can run two hdmi monitors: one from hdmi port the other from one tb port, leaving 3 still available, I think all tb interface have two Tb3 ports, so one Tb3 from computer , thrn daisy chain tb2-3 gear off the interface? So, you still have 2 tb ports open?

The internal ssd drive.

I'll have to see. I'm speaking of my Mini that I have now. I can just get a hub for one of the Tbolt ports. They are both used up - one is for my backup OS drive, the other my interface and UA Satellite. Def will have one ssd external for virtual and such. My other externals are all for audio projects and backups. I'm on a 1tb drive and its about 3/4 full.

@achase are you running anything off your satellite , doesn’t it have 2 tb ports ?
@johnken. I had an email from owc a couple of days ago about sales prices, so I thought that was BF related. Maybe it didn’t include external ssd tb drives: I’ll poke around, but you got a great deal on the Sandisk !
