Anyone here like using a plain old SM58 for your vocal mic ? The simplicity of being in the control room , no head phones and using a SM58 is something I'm gonna start trying out .
So far I like unscrewing the ball top pop-filter and using a regular standard pop filter instead . It makes the mic not sound so muddy . A little EQ and its sounding good .

sometimes I will put up a 57 and a pop screen, and run it into a 1073. I will have the pop screen a couple of inches away from the mic.
not often though
cheers

57 here too, not sure why, maybe because it's a tad skinnier than the 58, who knows

didn't Mick Jagger use a 57 or 58 almost exclusively?

I would recommend a client use a 58 over most budget LDCs unless they happen to be a really soft breathy female. While the Sm7 still eats it's lunch....the 58 is perfectly acceptable. Tip--pull the ball off, pull out the resonator disc, and put the ball back on. Gone is the harsh 4-5k boost. Now--your voice may NEED said boost...but, if it doesn't...I'm just saying--makes it flatter.
Warning--doing this with a 57....I killed my last 57 doing it--sounded great until I broke one of those hair thin wires putting it all back together. Oh well....but, the 58 the resonator disc is in the ball--not attached to the mic diaphragm like the 57 is.

Oh yeah I'm talking about recording Rock Music with the 58/57 , not Barbra Streisand or Celine dion .

Works great as a talkback mic.

I've used Sm57s to capture some quick vocal ideas before I forget them and was always surprised how good it sounded. I usually have one ready on one of my 1028 pres for these purposes. But somehow I can't get myself to use them for the actual recording.

I tracked my band's live rehearsal last week and was shocked at how great the vocals turned out with a 58. Pretty sure the 58 is going to beat out the 7b on our next session. We struggled a little with the 7b in mixing the first couple songs. Also, shocked at how great the live songs sounded in general. Maybe it's the bleed. Next record might be the Nashville way of doing things. A ribbon on overheads is crazy in terms of how focused it is on drums even though there is a bass cab and JCM800 blasting in the room. So much energy in the recording and we only used 5 tracks to record it.

No love here. There is always a better choice out there for lead vocals. Sometimes I might use one for backing vocals or something. I find that a lot of folks that I've dealt with in the studio who claim that the sm57/58 was their favorite, didn't have anything else to try, or did have something better and misused it. There are a few voices that do sound good on a SM57/58, but usually they have some kind of crazy shrillness in their voice and usually still sound better through a ribbon in that case.
Even though I've ended up with 5 of them, I dislike the SM5x in generally because their off axis bleed takes such a nasty nasal quality to it. That's why I switched to I5 or M201 for just about everything I would have used a 57/58 for.
I do have a couple old Unidyne III and 545's that I like a LOT better than the Shure branded stuff. They just sound completely different, although they are essentially the same design.

No matter what my voice would be buried and you couldn't hear it cut through the mix . So yeah for me I don't like the SM7b . I think bleed is great ! It adds depth and bigness to the instruments and sound.

Here we had a male singer/songwriter project recording a month ago, turns out the 58 did an awesome job, I thought at first oh well it will be nice warmup takes, but it was more than that ( going into an Aurora Audio GTQ II MK3 and Chandler Germcomp ) it was just the right mic, does not happen a lot, but it is not a mic to dismiss too fast imho. Keep in mind most singers are used to the sm58-ball while performing live, and I think when they sing into this mic ( even as a "fake" mic with "insert your fav voc mic" close to it ), it can provide them some kind of comfort, familiar feel with confidence-boost, which might help the performance. Regards, Nico

Come on guys.....your making my SM58 cry......
Well , a female device is better than an anal probe ,

I'd hate to have to face a 58 sized anal probe!! The annual prostate exam is bad enough with the doctor's finger as it is... luckily she's really hot and she always flirts.

No 58 here but 57 makes an appearance on bgvs and acgtr from time to time.

No 58 here but 57 makes an appearance on bgvs and acgtr from time to time. Just a suggestion... for BVox and ACgtr, replace that talk-back mic with a very inexpensive Neumann TLM102 and your ears might 'pop' when you listen back. $599 all day long and has the perfect 'built-in EQ' to sit them right.

Never heard one... though my experience with TLM anything has been...meh. My usual go to mics for acgtr are U67, KM54....or Shure 545. Do I really need a TLM 102?

All of Johns vocals on this album were a 57 . The producer said thats the only mic he would use because John thought it made his voice sound Rock n Roll .
I read Bob mention that Elvis used a 57 for all his early Rock music . Maybe John could hear the sound of the 57 on the Elvis stuff and thats why he thought it sounded Rock n Roll .
