Just how close does the Lulu get to the 84, or is this moreso one of those things where it doesn't necessarily get that close, but it doesn't matter because it's cool In its own right? I've never heard one, but I'm kind of interested. Tone is in the 84 ballpark but the polar pattern isn’t. It would be a contender if the polar pattern wasn’t what made the 84. Really a nice SDC for 90% of those who are looking for a nice SDC. It’s only ah if you know the 84 Schoeps, Senn etc.

This was awesome thanks. I preferred the Soyuz because it doesn’t sound tired (the km84 sounds like it has seen some years on that capsule and capacitors. Probably smokier than it was new). Amazing midrange voicing, but the Soyuz is a new sound which in the end is more exciting to me. Gonna get me some now.

I'm still amazed that the KM84 has not been reissued. As far as I remember, the capsules are still made. It would take very little effort to put them back in productions.

I have the 013. Had the 84 several times. The 84 is set and forget, but certainly nothing wrong with the Soyuz. I’ve ultimately just decided to just keep the Soyuz and I don’t even think about it. Never have issues.

The Soyuz absolutely sounds "better". More balanced, less noise, higher gain, richer overall. BUT... the KM84's slightly nasal tone is for some reason supremely musical. You just like how it sounds even if it isn't technically superior.
I love the Soyuz, to me it's the best SDC you can just go buy today, and is so reasonably priced in comparison to some other high end SDC's. High end quality, a warranty, great customer service, fair price, what's not to like.
I sure wouldn't mind having one of each though.

People talk a lot about the off axis sound of the km84, which to me sounds like the combination of an overly wide cardioid pattern, as well as a great off axis tone. The Soyuz (which I now own) don’t have a wide pattern but have a very musical off axis sound.
The test to me is one sdc on acoustic guitar, and the other one on voice. With the lulus, the off axis tone of the guitar mic/vocal bleed was pretty telephone-y. The Lulus sounded great but ultimately got sent back, the off axis sound being a bit of a weak link. The Soyuz sound gigantic with a very pleasing bleed. I love it on vocals too. Definitely the best overhead mic I’ve had.

I used the 013 pair for overs on a jazz record and really thought they were close to perfect.
