jsteiger, are the files available for the public? Not as of this time littlesicily. Johnny is checking though. The song is unreleased so he needs permission from the artist/label. Gotcha, totally understand.

Big gear day today! The Pultec build quality seems to be out of this world. Lovely lovely units.

First impression of a brief A/B w the Cartecs. Just as Jeff mentioned it's about millimeters, but still when boosting frequencies I found the Cartecs more soft and 'fluffy', Pulses tighter and more pronounced. Any comments from your big shoot out jsteiger? Mixing an orchestral jazz album right now and actually found no reason to move to the Pulses as I really like that soft angel dust treble I've gotten used to with the Cartecs.

In the shootout we recently did, they were on the mix bus only, with very low boost settings. That is the only use for my friend so he was not interested in trying them on individual tracks or at more extreme settings (at that time). As it was, the shootout we did took some hours. You know how those things can go!!
I would definitely agree with your descriptions though. That said, the real deal is also a bit softer than the Pulse units. It still has a little magic sheen on the top that none of the clones quite nail but we found the Cartec the closest in that regard. The Summit EQP-100 also does a great job in that area.

I'm a little embarrassed being such babe in the woods again, because I never asked Steve J about the tubes in the Pulses. Turns out to be russian Electro harmonix and Sovtek... Even though in some cases I feel that the tubes don't do that much of a difference I'll definitely want to check this out. So Jeff, you have GE and Mullard. Just got email from Christian Whitmore and he suggests testing T-funk, RCA and Sylvania and see what I like the best. I also have a Mullard 12AX7 in my DIY LA2 and spare T-funk, so I'll probably take a day off soon to do some testing.

I just want to chime in and also endorse Christian Whitmore. He set me up with a couple of NOS tubes for my RODE K2 that turned it into a highly usable mic (especially with my Great River pre).
He also found me some select tubes for my Blackface Pro Reverb after the last of its original pre amp RCA's bit the dust. Not cheap, but reasonable prices and he knows what he's talking about.

Pultec tube nerdery today!.. Christian provided a nice pair of Sylvanias for the input tubes (12AX7) on my Pultecs. And he also told me to do a little comparing with other 12AX7s that he previously provided for my LA2 and ADL1500s (LA2 style). Until now I've mostly been listening for difference in tone, but wow, now when comapring tubes on the buss I can hear what people use to talk about - Detail. Also firmness/tightness (instead of smudged). I instantly liked the Sylvanias compared to the stock Electro Harmonix. I then went on and compared to Mullard, Telefunken and RCA. Mullard was clearly the darkest (which I for some reason love on separate tracks), the T-funk was the brightest and finally the RCAs are my favorites. Very close to the Sylvanias, just a tiny bit more open but still very nice and smooth top, and of the contenders sound most 'as a record'.
