I don't get the question 100%... Wouldn't a Pultec eq emulating plugin always 'do' exactly the same thing as HW? Isn't the question how it sounds? I only have the Bombfactory and the Waves Pultecs. Compared it to my Cartecs. They do a similar thing, but I prefer the latter. Sorry not more clear... I guess I'm asking why people spend the money on a hardware pultec, drip, AML, etc *if* the plugs are really great. I know I'd rather record w/ my hardware STA, 1176, etc comps, but eq is fine for me ITB. I'm just wondering if there's a factor I'm not considering... maybe workflow or some sonic choice that isn't there ITB. I'm not trying tomopen a hardware/software debate... just specifically to the Pultec. For me, I'm mixing in a hybrid situation. My console is feeding a 2-buss chain and I like having eq available on the chain. I'll get my mix 90% of the way, do a bit of sweetening with the 2-buss eq, then finish while mixing into the eq. I don't really have a way of doing that with software. I'm also figuring that I can get a little use out of it while tracking too.

There's nothing more I'd like to see than a beautiful Pultec (or Drip) staring back at me from my rack, just not convinced I'd be getting any/much noticeable improvement in my scenario... recording vocals, guitars, bass, solo string instruments.

That's the beauty of buying used. If it doesn't work, flip it for what you paid.

I screwed up a lot of early recordings and my mix guys would train me... to make it easier on them come mix time! But, I learned a lot along the way and am very appreciative to them.

I thought the top end on the new UAD MkII Pultecs was pretty awesome - but - I haven't been around real vintage Pultec hardware more than a smattering of times...and didn't really get to use it that much. It just seems like it doesn't get harsh and clinical - and that's the characteristics of hardware EQ to me...

I'm coming down to Nashville in a few weeks. Maybe I can bring one along with a few other things. I think you would like it and find it very useful.

There was a disturbance in the Force at my bank account today. Pulled the trigger on a pair of Steve Jackson's Pultecs! No idea when they will ship though. Waiting for longed for gear is always a pain... Will be back with pics and a report.

Do you have any albums that you've recorded in particular that you especially like that I should check out? Congrats on the new Pultecs too!

There's a list at my homepage, with links to songs at Spotify, but perhaps that won't work in the U.S? I mostly do acoustic pop and jazz. I'm quite proud of being a part of the Magnus Lindgren 'Souls' album feat Gregory Porter (among others) that I mixed. It's almost smooth jazz which I believe make some people 'puke a little in their mouths' but I love that album, especially Gregory's songs and Ivan Lins singing his own hit 'She walks this earth'. I'm also very happy about co prod/co mix with one of our most loved artists here - Lisa Nilsson (album is in swedish). Finally, I posted a sample earlier in the 'What are you working on?' department: www.realgearonline.com/thread/319/albums-mixed-celebrating-yrs-consoleQuite complex project with jazz quartet + 1/3 symphony orchestra. Really happy with how that ended up. Thanks again! Paul

I never get used to (or enough of ) getting positive response, especially for mixing. Most recently mixed a double album for South African jazz pianist Kyle Shepherd. Got an email today that the album is now mastered and that he's so happy with the sound. That sure is rewarding. This all could possibly justify the new incoming gems... Jeez, they look sweet!

We have files of all the units. They were strapped across the mix bus. The track is one of Johnny K's mixes but unreleased material. He is checking to see if we can release the files. The band is fricking amazing and the track is killer. It was a nice way to really hear what all the versions of the EQ were doing. It's a game of millimeters and none were bad.

jsteiger, are the files available for the public? Not as of this time littlesicily. Johnny is checking though. The song is unreleased so he needs permission from the artist/label.
