I've been through hell getting my brass capsule 414 eb's in proper working order. They've been to several techs and were reskinned (one twice) by TF. One of the reskins failed and TF was good about redoing it. The problem was they were not well matched at all after that. The CK12 is a notoriously difficult capsule to work on as you probably know.
At the end of my rope I found Dave Wheeler at Nashville Vintage audio and he promised me he would get them sorted out. His reskin sounds better than they ever did and he replaced some tantalum caps that were causing a little bit of noise. Now they are quiet and sound incredible. Thanks again Dave!
I'll try to post some clips later today.

Not that I have vintage gear at all anymore, but great to hear on the re-skinning capabilities! Now I’m just trying to rack my brain on who TF is.

Didn’t realize they provided such services, so they didn’t come to mind. Hadn’t heard of reports on their services; this is the first time.

Pretty certain Tim Campbell could have helped you for a first class job as well .

Pretty certain Tim Campbell could have helped you for a first class job as well . Tim has a sterling reputation for these and I contacted him before my first reskin - he wouldn't take the the full microphone and I wasn't confident to remove the capsules to send him. The place I sent them took the full mics and handled it all. Needless to say I would've done things differently if I had to do it all over again, but I ended up with a phenomenal sounding set in the end thanks to Dave.

Dave is the man! Thanks Dave for helping me out with a 251 clone!
I’ve been wanting to brass-balls my 414’s, and possibly upgrade them. I’ll have to get a hold of Dave once I get over my cymbal and AS fetish!

Sounds amazing. Great feel, too. I saw about the bronze snare, but can you tell us about the whole set, including cymbals? Is it the Camco in the photo? Paiste cymbals? What's the mic positioning?

Yes I don't like clients risking valuable mics by sending them overseas. You wouldn't believe what shipping with insurance cost when shipping a vintage ELA M251 even short distances within europe.

This is why I thought that maybe some of us would bring mics to Nashville, and maybe some new capsules could be checked out there. We would need someone there that knows how to replace them, etc. Is this a bad idea? Maybe - just a thought.

Cymbals are a mix of old zildjian A's and Agop traditional. Kick is an 80's Gretsch w/no front head, toms are ludwigs. I had the 414's as a spaced pair just on the edges of the kit and measured to the snare center.

Everything about that setup (including the 414s) sounds like a good time to me.

Mario, Thanks for the kind words my friend! It was a pleasure to work with you to get your mics back to magical! Shipping snafus aside (haha)... I have played that clip for quite a few peers when Ck12/414 conversations come up these days. They're great sounding! -Dave
