Just dropping by to say I am still loving my SR-2N
I’ve used Royer 121s here and there and honestly they never wowed me. Maybe I’m weird?

Agreed on the R-121… I’m weird too! My favorite Royer is the R-122V; though that’s at a much higher price-range.

I was just wondering if I should go for a pair of R-121 or a pair of SR-2N. Guess I got my answer right there! These are recommended by Manny Nieto too. He uses them for Glynn Johns OHs.

I ended up selling my one SR2N. I really fancied it most on drums, which I never do at my own place (with my personal mic locker). Feels like a great value specifically for overheads/room pairs.

Looks like I finally have an SR-2N on the mail coming my way! Hoping to pair it with another one in the near future. I'm kind of new to ribbon mics, so I hope you don't mind me asking: what are you guys using them on besides drums and guitar cabinets?

literally just guitar cabs for me. I haven't gotten around to getting a second. I have a family of modded Apex 205s if I wanna do ribbons on Overhead/room duty - and I can't ever seeing using ribbons for both.
I work on really loud stuff almost exclusively, so I'm a little limited on what I would use them for.

Dows anyone know if using Cloudlifter with the SR-2N will make a noticeable difference? I know that I do tend to prefer the SM7B with it. I have a couple of high-end pres (Daking, Phoenix, LTL SB) so gain isn't a problem, but I'll do my own testing to make sure.

I do not find the stager need the extra gain.all the standard preamps work fine with it. Are you trying to achieve something with the cloudlifter?

A reasonably priced ribbon that punches way above its weight and can be used to close mic a cab and sounds great paired with 57 is the AEA R92.
I really like it on vocals too, but I think it sounds fantastic on a guitar cab.
Unlike the 84 it doesn’t need a big space to use it either.

Plus, you can likely add clean digital gain from your interface. I have Cloudlifter and Cathedral Pipes Durham. I've found they both give a clean strong signal, but unless you are working with really much older, and noisier, preamps, what's added is really little in terms of tone and quality.

I’ve never been able to use Royer on a Marshall cab. They always buckle 160s work great. The Stagers can take it too. Also I don’t always want figure Eight pattern on stuff particularly if the room doesn’t have anything nice to offer. Big fan of the Stagers on guitar amp (1A is insane, and 2Ns sound so great paired with a 57 or 023 Bomblet). I am curious about a Beyer 160 as it seems to be loved for electric guitar amps, so I am wondering how the 160 compares to the Stager sound.

It’s like it’s shifted up an octave. That’s not completely accurate but it’s like the bottom isn’t as big and maybe it’s more detailed up top.
